Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When making a film, who has the overarching responsibility for set, location, and costume design?

Answer: Production designer

A production designer (sometimes called an art director) is responsible for the visual aspects of the film. They monitor the style of the sets, props, and costumes so that everything matches. In 2013, the Oscar for Best Production Design was awarded to Catherine Martin, the production designer for "The Great Gatsby".

She designed beautiful art deco sets to brilliantly recreate the Roaring Twenties.
2. Which of these things would a costume designer need to consider?

Answer: Jewellery

The costume designer will work with the production designer to create the outfits each character will wear throughout the movie. Together, they will make sure the costumes match the tone of the setting. For example, a 16th century queen needs an opulent dress and expensive-looking jewellery, and soldiers in a war film need the right uniform for their army and time period.
3. Who manages the lighting and camera crews on set during filming?

Answer: Cinematographer

The cinematographer, or director of photography, is in charge of the camera and lighting crews. They make decisions about things like the type of camera or lens used for each shot. Cinematographers also plan lighting techniques to fit the scene. Harsh white lights can be used to create a clinical hospital environment, for example, but a softer light would better create a relaxed atmosphere, like in a cosy living room at night.
4. The role of film editor has become redundant with the development of digital film. True or false?

Answer: False

Way back in film's early days, a workprint (a positive copy of the film negative) had to be cut up and stuck back together by hand. A film editor had to physically cut up the workprints from different takes and camera angles, and stick them together in such a way that the audience wouldn't even notice it had been done. Even though most movies are created digitally now, film editors still play a crucial role in movie-making.

Instead of using scissors and glue, however, they use computer software to edit digital film. An editor's job is much more than simply sticking shots together: they have to consider comic timing and suspense, too.
5. In a movie's post-production, what does a colourist do?

Answer: Alters the colours in the footage

Some colourists dye people's hair, but in the post-production side of a movie, a colourist alters the colour in a film. Colour correction, or colour grading, involves altering the colours that appear in the original footage. Sometimes, the colours are altered to make the scene appear more natural.

For example, crews can spend hours - sometimes even days - shooting a scene in an outdoor location. The amount of natural light will alter over time, but a colourist can change the brightness of the footage so that it is consistent throughout. Alternatively, colourists can make a dream-like or fantasy atmosphere by increasing the brightness in a scene, or by giving the whole scene a coloured tint.
6. Which of these jobs would a boom operator be expected to do?

Answer: Position the microphones

Hand-held or clip-on microphones are great for TV presenters, but when you're trying to recreate real life in a movie, you don't want a little black blob attached to each character's clothes. That's where a boom operator comes in. A boom mic is a microphone attached to the end of a long pole.

The boom operator has to hold the boom mic as close to the actors as possible, while also making sure it (and its shadow) is out of shot.
7. A character in the movie has been in an accident and is covered in bruises. Whose job is it to create the bruises on the actor?

Answer: Make-up artist

Make-up artists play a crucial role in a character's look. They ensure that a character looks the right age, and can make the same actor look ten years older or ten years younger if needed. They can add bruises and scars to an actor's skin and must ensure that the colour and position remain the same in every shot. Make-up artists also add to the look of a scene.

The make-up needed for characters heading to a fancy ball would be different to how they would look waking up the next morning.
8. The best boy is the key grip's assistant, but what do they both do on set?

Answer: They organise the lighting and camera equipment

The best boy reports to the key grip and the key grip reports to the cinematographer. The key grip decides which equipment is needed for each scene, such as camera cranes and dollies (a kind of cart that a camera sits on so that is can smoothly move horizontally). As well as working with the camera crew, the key grip will work with electricians and lighting technicians to ensure that all of the electrical items on set are in the right place.

In the 1982 disaster spoof, "Airplane! II", the role of best boy is credited to Frank McKane. Underneath, 'worst boy' is credited to Adolf Hitler.
9. Which aspect of film-making is a foley artist involved in?

Answer: Sound effects

Foley artists work with sound effects after filming has finished. In the early days of film, microphones couldn't capture much more than the dialogue, so noises like footsteps and doors closing had to be added in afterwards. Today, microphones are much more sensitive, but foley artists are still needed. Sometimes there are extra sounds needed that aren't created on set.

In "Star Trek", for example, the doors of the starship Enterprise whooshed open automatically. How do you make the noise of a spaceship door? You slide a piece of paper out of an envelope of course!
10. Some people who work on a movie set have to be highly trained in a variety of areas. Who would need to know about martial arts, car racing and horse riding?

Answer: Stunt coordinator

Stunt coordinators will usually have spent some time working as a stunt performer. They choreograph the stunts in a movie that actors or stunt performers will carry out. Sometimes stunt coordinators will specialise in a particular area, like martial arts, but many are trained in a variety of skills.

As stunts are often dangerous, a large part of the coordinator's job is making them as safe as possible for everyone involved.
