Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At night, you would experience sleep-learning and you would take soma to remain happy and peaceful. Who wrote 'Brave New World', a novel set in the year AF 632?

Answer: Aldous Huxley

Aldous Huxley's 'Brave New World' was published in 1932. It was set in the year 2540 CE, but within the novel, it was known as AF 632. 'AF' stood for 'after Ford', as in Henry Ford and his assembly line. That year marked the beginning of a new era of technology, science, and productivity.

It led to a society of artificially created embryos and clones, a caste system, and control by hypnosis and drug use.
2. In the Republic of Gilead, a woman's only role in society was to breed. If you were one of the few fertile women left, you might have been taken to serve a Commander and his wife. In which novel (later made into a TV show) did this happen?

Answer: The Handmaid's Tale

In 'The Handmaid's Tale', there had been a revolution in America. The Republic of Gilead was created and women's rights were removed. The main character was separated from her family, her name was taken away, and she was trained for her new role as a handmaid. The novel was written by Margaret Atwood and published in 1985. The story was adapted for TV in 2017.
3. 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' was set in a totalitarian state known as Oceania. It contained the Ministry of Truth and Thought Police. What was the name of the leader of Oceania?

Answer: Big Brother

Big Brother was always watching. In Oceania, the telescreens were virtually everywhere, recording what citizens were doing. The Ministry of Peace supported the superstate's ceaseless wars; the Ministry of Love arrested and tortured people; the Ministry of Plenty imposed rations on food; the Ministry of Truth circulated falsified news and 'rewrote' historical accounts. Big Brother was allegedly the head of Oceania, though the only part of him that seemed to exist was a picture of his face.
4. A computer met the needs of humans living underground across the world. Eventually, those people began to think of the computer as a deity and when it started to malfunction, it was considered to be the whim of their god. What was the name of this 1909 short story by E.M. Forster?

Answer: The Machine Stops

In 'The Machine Stops', the Machine provided for each person's physical and spiritual needs as they lived in isolated rooms under the surface of the Earth. Humans had become reliant on the Machine and started to think of it as a deity. The knowledge of how to maintain it was lost, so the humans couldn't do anything when it started to malfunction.
5. Humans had largely been wiped out by a man-made disease and the world was becoming overrun by genetically engineered hybrid animals. Both were created by a bio-engineering maverick with a God complex. Which novel was the first in a trilogy by Margaret Atwood?

Answer: Oryx and Crake

'Oryx and Crake' was published in 2003 and was followed by 'The Year of the Flood' and 'Maddaddam'. Crake was the nickname of a bioengineer who had created a new species of life based on human DNA. At the same time, he was responsible for the BlyssPluss pill that promised health and happiness to anyone who took it.

The pill intentionally contained a virus that killed a large proportion of humanity. 'The Year of the Flood' and 'Maddaddam' explored the lives of some of the survivors in their new world.
6. A small farming community were making a life for themselves after an apocalyptic event. If your body was mutated, you had to try your best to hide it. 'The Chrysalids' was published in 1955. Who wrote it?

Answer: John Wyndham

'The Chrysalids' was written by John Wyndham. In the novel, David Strorm was a child living in a small town on the edge of the Fringes - the wastelands populated with mutated plants, animals, and humans. Any deviation from the 'norm' would result in crops and livestock being killed or sterilised. Mutated humans would be sent to live in the Fringes where they would have to fend for themselves.
7. If you love books, prepare to watch them go up in flames. Which numbers complete Ray Bradbury's novel 'Fahrenheit ___'?

Answer: 451

In 'Fahrenheit 451', books were shunned in favour of television. Education was perceived to create inequality and objections to certain works led to widespread censorship. As a result, books were ultimately banned. Any home that contained books were burned down, sometimes with the occupant still inside.
8. James Dashner wrote a novel about a group of teenagers who were living in a place called the Glade, which was surrounded by concrete walls that shifted and changed. What was the name of this novel, that was made into a film in 2014?

Answer: The Maze Runner

In 'The Maze Runner', Thomas arrived in the Glade with amnesia. He didn't know who he was and had no memory of how he got there. A group of boys were living in the Glade, all in a similar situation to Thomas. Beyond the Glade was the Maze: miles of incredibly high concrete walls that moved position each day.

The group spent their time trying to find a way out, while also avoiding the Grievers.
9. There were the placid Eloi who were terrified of the dark and the brutal Morlocks who despised the light. In what year did the narrator find these creatures in 'The Time Machine?' by H.G. Wells?

Answer: 802,701

The future looked bleak for the human race in 'The Time Machine' by H.G. Wells. Humanity had evolved into two types of creatures: the Eloi and the Morlocks. The Eloi were naive and helpless, and the Morlocks preyed on them at night. Evidence of civilisation was also crumbling away into nothing.
10. Suzanne Collins wrote a trilogy about the fictional country of Panem. Every year, one boy and one girl from each district were selected to participate in a fight to the death. What was the first novel called?

Answer: The Hunger Games

'The Hunger Games' was published in 2008. Panem was divided into 12 districts that were ruled over by the Capitol. As punishment for a rebellion many years previously, two teenagers from each district were chosen at random to compete in the Hunger Games. The winner (that is, the survivor) was awarded wealth and supplies for their district.
