quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who wrote the novel upon which the movie is loosely based?

Answer: Max Brooks

Max Brooks also wrote "The Zombie Survival Guide", a must-have for anyone's zombie-apocalypse library.

Leonardo DiCaprio also wanted the rights to the book, and his production company, Appian Way, fought it out with Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment. Brad won the rights in 2007. The original budget was $125 million, but the film ended up costing $190 million to complete. Even so, Paramount announced in June 2013 that there would be a sequel.
2. What was the last meal the Lane family enjoyed before their lives were changed forever by the plague?

Answer: Pancakes

The kids were clamoring for pancakes even before the parents were out of bed. Gerry's tame job of pancake-making was about to change...
3. What is the first tangible thing the family loses in the plague?

Answer: Side-view mirror

Gerry and his family are stuck in traffic, and they don't yet know what is happening. A motorcycle cop comes zooming through the narrow lane between the stopped cars, rips off their side-view mirror, and keeps going. Gerry gets out of the car to find out what is going on, and a second motorcycle cop orders him back into his vehicle. Gerry complies, and a moment later, the cop is obliterated by a speeding dump truck.

Question: Since there was a solid line of cars bumper-to-bumper behind Gerry's, how did that truck get through? (Oops!)
4. What unexpected thing does the cop in the NJ Mart in Newark do?

Answer: Takes baby food and formula

It's a great *psych* moment... you think he is going to hassle Gerry, who is standing there with the rifle. Gerry holds the rifle over his head to indicate submission, but the cop ignores him and starts grabbing baby food and formula off the shelf.
5. Where does Tomas join the family?

Answer: Newark

Tomas and his parents live in an apartment building near the NJ Mart. Tomas's mother and father don't heed Gerry's warning that to stay in one place is to perish. In the last scene the movie shows of them, zombies are breaking down their apartment door. Somehow (the movie does not show) Tomas escapes and joins the Lane family on their way to meet the helicopter on the roof of the apartment building.
6. In the stairwell, what are the two things Gerry fashions to protect himself against the infected?

Answer: Gauntlet and bayonet

He fashions a gauntlet for his forearm out of a magazine and duct tape, and affixes a knife to the end of his rifle... again with handy duct tape.

You should always keep a good supply of duct tape on hand in your zombie-apocalypse kit.
7. Who does Under-Secretary Thierry Umutoni send with Gerry to locate the source of the infection?

Answer: Dr. Fassbach, a virologist from Harvard

Gerry, Dr. Fassbach, and a team of soldiers are sent to South Korea, the first place to use the word 'zombie' in relation to the current plague. They thought this must be where the infection began, and if they could get more information about the origin of the plague, it would be easier to develop a vaccine.
8. How does the virologist die?

Answer: He accidently shoots himself

Even though Gerry told him to keep his finger off the trigger of his handgun and on the trigger guard, Dr. Fassbach forgets when they are being chased by the infected. He trips on his way up the ramp into the plane and fatally shoots himself.

This is yet another tragic handgun accident that could have been prevented by NOT GIVING A GUN TO THE UNTRAINED SCIENCE GEEK! This is #5 on my "Rules for the Zombie Apocalypse" list.
9. In the chow line aboard the Argus, one of the girls complains that the water tastes funny. Why?

Answer: The water has jet fuel in it

One of the soldiers in the line tells them about the jet fuel in the water. Another soldier adds, "De-sal has trouble filtering it out. All because there's too many people on the ship."

On aircraft carriers in the real world, there is more attention paid to keeping water out of the jet fuel! In 2014, the US Naval Research Laboratory successfully flew a radio-controlled airplane, using only fuel derived completely from seawater. Maybe on aircraft carriers in the future, both fresh water and jet fuel will come from the same source: seawater.
10. Who was the first military personnel infected in South Korea? This one's tricky.

Answer: An AWOL soldier

A soldier at the base in South Korea tells them, after pointing out one of the burned bodies, "He was the camp doctor. He'd just returned from the field. Been sent out to verify the death of a soldier who'd just gone AWOL the week before. Some villagers had found this guy, foaming at the mouth, oozing some kind of black tar. Then he tried to bite one of them. They shot him, tied him up, threw him in a barn. That's all we know, except the doctor comes back here and starts attacking his patients."

The doctor had been bitten by the AWOL soldier.
11. According to the ex-CIA man, how did North Korea stop the spread of the infection?

Answer: They pulled out everyone's teeth

The CIA guy, played to the pinnacle of creepiness by David Morse, tells them: "They pulled the teeth of all 23 million, in less than 24 hours. The greatest feat of social engineering in history."

This character talks funny, with a strange lisp. You can guess why!
12. In South Korea, on the way back to the plane, what sound alerted the zombies to the group's presence?

Answer: Gerry's phone

Earlier, Gerry's call to Karin had not gone through. She tried to return the call... at the very worst moment.

I guess Gerry would be one of those people in movie theaters that believe the rules about cell phones just don't apply to them.
13. In Jerusalem, what drove the infected into a frenzy?

Answer: The sound of singing and feedback

The refugees were singing to celebrate their deliverance from danger. A woman began singing into a microphone, and the feedback noise, in addition to the loud sound of singing, was enough to send the zombies into a frenzy. Gerry tried to warn the Mossad official to make them stop the noise, but it was already too late.
14. According to Mossad official Jurgen Warmbrunn, Israeli leaders implemented the following action plan: if ten men look at the same information and nine come to the exact same conclusion, then...?

Answer: it is the duty of the tenth man to disagree

Warmbrunn explains the 'tenth man' to Gerry. He said that the Jews had greatly suffered from the results of not believing that horrific events (Jews being killed in the concentration camps, Jews being killed at the Olympics, and Jews being killed by Arab violence) could happen, and this prompted Mossad to make a change.

Now, if nine men look at the same information and come to the exact same conclusion, it is the *duty* of the tenth man to disagree. For the plague, Warmbrunn was the tenth man, and believed the words for 'zombie' or 'undead' in communiques from India were not euphemisms, but were meant literally. He was the reason Jerusalem's walls were finished just in time.
15. How did the zombies get into Jerusalem?

Answer: They climbed each other like insects and got over the wall

One of the interesting aspects of this movie is the way the zombies are portrayed as being almost insect-like, akin to a swarm of ants or bees. There are several CGI sequences, constructed to result in an aerial view, that show crowds of the infected moving in this swarm-like manner.

In nature, there are many examples of insects creating structures with their bodies that serve as ladders or bridges. Solenopsis invicta, a common species of fire ant, link their legs and mouths together to make rafts that can stay afloat for weeks!
