Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the 1989 rock music festival in Moscow to promote sobriety?

Answer: Moscow Music Peace Festival

Rock stars against drugs may sound like an oxymoron. But in 1989, many bands gathered in Moscow, Russia for the Moscow Music Peace Festival to promote sobriety. The festival was headlined by Motley Crue, Skid Row, Bon Jovi, Ozzy Osbourne, and many others.

However, the show was completely gilded. It was actually metal manager Doc McGhee's community service for a drug offense, and the plane with the bands on board was full of drugs and alcohol. Even though some bands did make an effort to come clean, many others did not.
2. How did W.A.S.P. guitarist Chris Holmes get knocked out at a 1984 concert?

Answer: Someone from the audience threw a piece of frozen meat at him.

W.A.S.P. was notorious for throwing meat into the crowd at their concerts. Soon the fans started bringing meat to throw back at the band. The fans' favorite meat to throw seemed to be liver. At a show in Finland in 1984, someone threw a huge chunk of frozen meat at Chris Holmes, right at the start of a song. Blackie Lawless turned around, wondering why he wasn't playing.

He found Chris knocked out cold!
3. Faster Pussycat drummer Mark Michaels was once arrested for mailing what to himself?

Answer: Heroin

During Faster Pussycat's 1989 tour, the band was in the mid west when drummer Mark Michaels decided to go on to their next venue a day early. He claimed he was going to party with the road crew at their next stop in Nebraska. Mark had actually mailed a box of heroin to himself at his next hotel room! When the rest of the band got to Nebraska, they learned that he had been arrested.

They had to leave Mark in jail because they didn't have enough money to bail him out.
4. Who once performed a guitar solo atop an active volcano in Hawaii?

Answer: George Lynch

Dokken's 1984 video "Just Got Lucky" was filmed in Hawaii. In the video, guitarist George Lynch stood right near the opening of a smoking volcano! He performed until the lava started boiling up, then he got away. The volcano fully erupted about 25 minutes later. A Dokken song that would have fit that setting better was "Into the Fire". Talk about realistic special effects.
5. Why was Axl Rose arrested after a 1991 Guns N' Roses concert in St. Louis?

Answer: He started a riot.

Axl Rose was often known for his unpredictable, raging temper. During a 1991 concert in St. Louis, Axl saw a man in the audience video taping the show. He called for security to stop the fan from taping. When security didn't come, Axl jumped off the stage and tackled the man himself.

Afterward, Axl led Guns N' Roses off stage, and the crowd started a riot. By the time it was broken up, 16 fans were arrested, 60 were treated for injuries, and eventually, Axl was arrested for inciting a riot.
6. What band kept a computerized database of their groupies?

Answer: Poison

Even before the age of the Internet, the members of Poison kept a database of their groupies on an early computer. The women were listed by location and phone number, and when Poison passed through a particular town again, they would try to get back up with their favorite groupies. With the computer system, Bret Michaels says that Poison was much ahead of their own time.
7. How did Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen lose his arm?

Answer: Car accident

On New Year's Eve 1984, Rick Allen was driving on a rural English road when he tried to pass another car. Rick's car skidded off the road and flipped over a brick wall into an open field. He lost his left arm in the accident. Determined not to give up, he created a special drum set that allowed him to play with just one arm. Tesla was with Def Leppard the night Rick rejoined, and they thought it was very touching.
8. What was the name of the 1984 mockumentary directed by Rob Reiner that made fun of '80s hair metal?

Answer: This Is Spinal Tap

"This is Spinal Tap" is a cult classic about a British band that wasn't actually a band until the movie. It is full of silly antics and incidents that most metal bands say they can relate to. During the movie, Spinal Tap got lost trying to get to the stage, held a record signing at which no fans showed up, had an amplifier that went all the way to eleven (instead of the normal ten volume), and had problems with their stage props.
9. What band wrote an infamous memoir called "The Dirt"?

Answer: Motley Crue

No metal memoir is as notorious and openly revealing as Motley Crue's "The Dirt". Published in 2001, all four members of the Crue take turns telling about their chlidhoods, their lives after they first became a band, their tragedies, drug problems, loves, and some little-known backgrounds about albums.

It is the perfect book for open-minded metal fans. Paramount has even approached the Crue about making a movie version of "The Dirt". Now that would be interesting!
10. What was the name of the collaboration of forty different metal stars who came together to perform a song to benefit African poverty?

Answer: Hear N' Aid

The Hear N' Aid project was organized by Ronnie James Dio in 1985 and was clearly supposed to be the metal answer to "We Are The World". He got together 40 different rocks stars, including members of Dio, Judas Priest, Quiet Riot, Dokken, Motley Crue, W.A.S.P., and many others, and they recorded a memorable eight minute song called "Stars".

The project was to benefit poverty in Ethiopia, the same way "We Are The World" also benefited Africa. The Hear N' Aid project was also number one on VH1's "!00 Most Metal Moments".
