Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "You never close your eyes anymore when I kiss your lips And there's no tenderness like before in your fingertips You're trying hard not to show it But baby, baby I know it" Identify this #1 from 1965.

Answer: You've Lost That Loving Feeling

By The Righteous Brothers (Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield and unrelated), this song was a two week chart topper in January. Together, they had seven top-40's until 1966 when they split up, only to reunite in 1974 when they had three more top 40's. The duo faded from view until this song was featured in the movie "Top Gun" in 1986.

Their popularity soared even further when their rendition of "Unchained Melody" was featured in the movie "Ghost" in 1990. Bobby Hatfield died in 2003... the "Brothers" are no more.
2. "When you're alone and life is making you lonely You can always go _____________ When you've got worries, all the noise and the hurry Seems to help, I know _____________" Fill in the blank to complete the lyric. It's the song's title!

Answer: Downtown

"Downtown", written by Tony Hatch, was Petula Clark's debut onto the Billboard charts and was the first #1 of the year 1965. Strangely, Petula was 32 years of age at this time, relatively old to be breaking into the music biz one would think. Actually, Petula was an enormously popular child entertainer in the U.K. having appeared in over 20 movies, having her own radio show in 1943 and a TV series in 1950.

Her first record was released in the U.S. in 1951 but it wasn't until this smash that she made her presence felt.
3. "Golden words he will pour in your ear But his lies can't disguise what you fear For a golden girl knows when he's kissed her It's the kiss of death" True or false - these lyrics come from the first James Bond movie.

Answer: False

To complete the last line - "It's the kiss of death from Mister Goldfinger" and the movie "Goldfinger" was released in 1964. That made it the third Bond flick, preceded by "Dr. No" in 1962 and "From Russia With Love" in 1963. However, this movies' theme song, also entitled "Goldfinger", was the first of the "Bond themes" to break onto the Billboard top 40 charts peaking at #8 in March 1965.

It was sung by Shirley Bassey, a blues singer from Wales. She was very popular in Great Britain but her successes in North America amounted to this and three other songs that peaked at #55, #57 (another Bond movie theme - "Diamonds Are Forever") and #48.
4. "The purpose of a man is to love a woman, And the purpose of a woman is to love a man, So come on baby let's start today, come on baby let's play" According to the lyric that follows, what will this singer and his "baby" play?

Answer: the game of love

"Game Of Love" was a #1 debut release for The Mindbenders. The lead singer was Wayne Fontana and he left the band immediately after this hit. The Mindbenders carried on for another couple of years and had one other big Billboard hit, "A Groovy Kind Of Love", a #2 in 1966.

They disbanded in 1967 or shortly thereafter. Today, Wayne Fontana fronts a different Mindbenders band that performs on the nostalgia circuit.
5. I'm wagering that most everyone will be able to name this tune so I'm asking you to fill in the blank! "Ah, but..two hours of pushin' broom Buys an eight by twelve four-bit room I'm a man of means, by no means _______ ____ ____ _____"

Answer: King of the Road

Written and performed by Roger Miller, it was his only million seller Gold Record and by far the biggest of his twelve top forty charting singles. It peaked at #4. He passed away of lung cancer at the age of 56 in 1992.
6. "When I look into your big brown eyes It's so very plain to see That it's time you learned about the facts of life Starting from A to Z" The title is?

Answer: Birds And The Bees

Jewel Akens recorded this #3 hit and it would prove to be his solo entry onto Billboard Top Forty charts. As of 2004, he apparently was still active in Las Vegas as part of the "Thirty Years Of Rock Revue".
7. Which 1965 #1 hit by The Supremes included these lines? "But is her sweet expression worth more than my love and affection? But this time before you leave my arms and rush off to her charms (Think it over) Haven't I been good to you? (Think it over) Haven't I been sweet to you?"

Answer: Stop! In the Name Of Love

This was The Supremes fourth #1 hit in eight months. Ultimately, they would have twelve #1 hits, all with Diana Ross as lead singer. When she abandoned the group in 1969, the group carried on led by Mary Wilson with several different people assuming Diana's role.

They would have eight more top forty hits, two of which reached top ten status. One of the former members of the group, circa 1973, Scherrie Payne, formed a new trio in the late 80's billed as The Supremes and were still touring worldwide as of 2004.
8. "He's really down and he's no clown (yeah yeah) He has the finest penthouse I've ever seen in town (yeah, yeah) And he's cute in his mohair suit And he keeps his pockets full of spending loot (yeah, yeah)" These lyrics are from a #8 song in 1965. An almost identical cover version of the same song was released in 1981 and peaked at #7. What song was it?

Answer: The Boy From New York City

The original 1965 version was recorded by the Ad Libs. They were true one hit wonders and disbanded within a couple of years. The cover was performed by The Manhattan Transfer and was almost identical to the original, so much so that the casual listener could not differentiate between the two versions.
9. "______________ can mean something beautiful And _______________ can mean dreams that are coming true And then your heart won't have to break like mine did If there's love behind it" What song title fills in the blanks?

Answer: This Diamond Ring

Gary Lewis and the Playboys reached #1 for two weeks with this, their debut release. Their first seven releases all reached top ten Billboard status and no other 60's recording act duplicated this feat. Gary was drafted into the army in early 1967 and upon his discharge in 1968, he resumed the band but "Sgt. Pepper's" influence was apparent.

The Playboys were not "psychedelic" and their days were numbered as an influential force on the charts, their swan song "Sealed With A Kiss" peaking at #19 in 1968.

As of 2001, Lewis resided in New York and was fronting a new Playboys band.
10. "I've got sunshine on a cloudy day When it's cold outside I've got the month of May Well, I guess you'll say, what can make me feel this way?" Well... what?

Answer: My Girl

"My Girl" would be the Temptations first of four #1 hits they would record. The group formed in Detroit as "The Primes" in 1960 and exist to this day (2004) with one original member, Otis Williams.
11. "When I'm watchin' my TV And that man comes on to tell me How white my shirts can be But he can't be a man 'cause he doesn't smoke The same cigarettes as me" The first #1 Rolling Stones hit. Although the true title included a parenthetical prelude, I'll just ask for the main word.

Answer: Satisfaction

A million seller with the parenthetical title "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" it topped the charts for 4 weeks. The Stones are an authentic rock & roll institution having had eight #1's and forty-one top 40 hits from 1964 to 1989.
12. Shirley Ellis had a big hit with a rhyming song "The Name Game". Following are the words relevant to Shirley: "Shirley! Shirley, Shirley bo Birley Bonana fanna fo Firley Fee fy mo Mirley... Shirley!" Which of the following names are not featured in the song's lyrics?

Answer: Diana

"The Name Game" was a #3 hit and Shirley's biggest. She had only two other charting hits - The #8 "The Nitty Gritty" in 1964, and another #8, "The Clapping Song" later in 1965. One would think it unusual to use the name "Lincoln" in a song of this nature since it is rather uncommon. Lincoln Chase was her husband and co-lyricist at the time.
13. "Suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be. There's a shadow hanging over me." The title of this Beatle hit was?

Answer: Yesterday

These were the four Beatle hits that year that would garner #1 status and "Yesterday" was the biggest of all, #1 for four weeks. As of the early 1990's, there had been over 2500 recorded versions of this song.
14. "I been all around this great big world And I seen all kinds of girls Yeah, but I couldn't wait to get back in the States Back to the cutest girls in the world" Where do the Beach Boys wish all the pretty girls in the States could live?

Answer: California

The Beach Boys stated throughout the song "I wish they all could be California girls". This was a #3 song for the boys in 1965 and coincidentally, also a #3 song for David Lee Roth twenty years later in 1985.
15. Tom Jones made his debut onto the charts in 1965 with a song that peaked at #10. In the bridge between the second and third verses, he sings these words: "Love will never do, what you want it to Why can't this crazy love be mine" What was the song's title?

Answer: It's Not Unusual

What is unusual is that Jones never had a #1 hit in North America despite his enormous popularity here, particularly with the ladies, Marge Simpson included! Of his nineteen songs that hit the top forty charts, "She's A Lady" peaked at #2, Jones' highest chart success in 23 years from 1965 to 1988.
