Somehow I overlooked these classics from 1964 in my previous quizzes. No accounting of the year would be complete without acknowledging these hits. Enjoy!

quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Been missing ya, miss kissing ya Instead of breaking up Let's do some kissing and making up" And the title is?

Answer: Baby Love

"Baby Love" was the second of five consecutive #1 hits the Supremes would record in 1964-5. All were Holland-Dozier-Holland compositions.
2. "She looked good (looked good), she looked fine (looked fine) She looked good, she looked fine and I nearly lost my mind" The title of this ditty was "Do Wah ______ ______"

Answer: Diddy Diddy

This was #1 for a couple of weeks in October 1964 for Manfred Mann, a rock band formed in England earlier that year. It seems to me that the song was reprised in the movie "Stripes" in 1981 and it was referred to as "The Theme From Stripes". However, I can find no corroboration that this was the case. Did I dream this up?
3. "He likes bread and butter, he likes _______ and _______, That's what his baby feeds him, he's her loving man." These lines comprise the chorus of the Newbeats hit "Bread and Butter". What other food items fill in the blanks?

Answer: toast and jam

"Bread and Butter" peaked at #2 in the fall of 1964 and it would be the Newbeats biggest hit of the four chart entries the group would have. It was a pretty catchy song although I'm certain that lead singer Larry Henley's screeching falsetto got on some people's nerves after a while.
4. The following lines come from a Four Seasons 1964 hit. Which one? "When she was just a kid her clothes were hand-me-down They always laughed at her when she came into town"

Answer: Rag Doll

"Rag Doll" would be the fourth #1 hit for the group from Newark. That same year, "Ronnie" would peak at #6, "Dawn" at #3 while "Big Girls Don't Cry" was their second big hit, a #1 in 1962.
5. The song "Dancing In The Street" was a #2 song for Martha and the Vandellas in 1964. It was later covered by the Mamas and the Papas, Van Halen and the dynamic duo of Mick Jagger and David Bowie. In all versions, they mention several U.S. cities where the the dancin' is happenin'. Which of these cities is NOT mentioned?

Answer: Cleveland

Cleveland is mentioned, however, in a very similar style song "The Heart Of Rock & Roll" by Huey Lewis and the News in 1984. Martha and the Vandellas version of "Dancing in the Street" was the biggest of all the charting versions, achieving #2 status.

The Jagger/Bowie version reached #7 in 1985, Van Halen's topped out at #38 in 1982 and the Mamas and Papas stalled at #73 with their rendition in 1967.
6. "Well, where oh where can my baby be? The Lord took her away from me. She's gone to heaven, so I got to be good, So I can see my baby when I leave this world." Another "death and dying" song! Which one?

Answer: Last Kiss

I never really could understand the popularity of this particular rock "genre", this fascination with death. Nevertheless, J. Frank Wilson and the Cavalieres scored a #2 with this maudlin effort in November, 1964. Even worse, Pearl Jam, of all the groups, covered it for a hit in 2002 or 2003.
7. "If I had it in my power I'd arrange for every girl to have your charms Then every minute, every hour Everybody would find what I found in your arms" The title of this #1 hit in 1964?

Answer: Everybody Loves Somebody

Dean Martin reached the apex of the charts in August 1964 with this song. It was his second #1 hit, his first being "Memories Are Made Of This" in 1956. In fact, this was his first top 40 hit since "Volare" in 1958 so this was quite the comeback for Martin in the world of music although he was still a popular entertainer in movies and in the clubs of Vegas.
8. "I guess I'll go on home, it's late There'll be tomorrow night, but wait What do I see? Is she walkin' back to me? Yeah, she's walkin' back to me." Which Orbison song is this from 1964?

Answer: Oh, Pretty Woman

This was Orbison's second and last #1 hit, "Running Scared" being his first in 1961. It was #1 for three weeks and it would be his only million copy selling Gold Record.
9. "The birds in the sky would be sad and lonely, If they knew that I lost my one and only, They'd be sad" Those familiar with the Lennon/McCartney songbook will probably recognize the lyric but the Beatles didn't record this song as a single. It was a #9 hit for Billy J. Kramer with The Dakotas in 1964. What was the song's title?

Answer: Bad To Me

Lennon and McCartney often penned lyrics for other artists. Billy J. Kramer was another Liverpudlian discovered and managed by Brian Epstein. Of course, he coincidentally was also the Beatles manager!
10. "Woke up this mornin' feelin' fine There's somethin' special on my mind Last night I met a new girl in the neighbourhood, whoa yeah" Can you remember this one from Herman's Hermits?

Answer: I'm Into Something Good

"I'm Into Something Good", written by Carole King and Gerry Goffen, was the group's debut single charting at #13 in December 1964. In 1965 they would have two #1 hits and would remain as chart factors until 1968. Essentially, the group disbanded when Peter Noone, the lead singer, departed in 1972.
