Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Oh, my love, my darling I've hungered for your touch a long, lonely time Time goes by so slowly and time can do so much Are you still mine I need your love, I need your love, God speed your love to me" I'm sure familiar words - but to what song?

Answer: Unchained Melody

Now if this song seems to have been around forever, it darned near has been! There were four charting entries of this song in 1955, the most popular being Les Baxter's #1 version and Al Hibbler's #3 version. The Righteous Brothers brought it back in 1965 and it charted at #4.

It was re-released in 1990, not just once, but twice, when the song was featured in the movie "Ghost". Now if you've grown a wee bit weary of this lachrymose rendition, try to find Vito and the Salutations 1963 doo wop version, also covered by the Manhattan Transfer on one of their albums.

It'll break you up!
2. "If she finds that I've been round to see you Tell her that I'm well and feelin' fine Don't let on, don't say she's broke my heart I'd go down on my knees but it's no good to pine" Name this chart topper!

Answer: Mrs. Brown You've Got A Lovely Daughter

#1 for three weeks in May 1965 and performed by Herman's Hermits. The song was written by Trevor Peacock whose writing credits were few. He was and continues to be a TV and movie actor in the UK performing everything from Shakespeare to Soap Operas.
3. "And now my life has changed in oh so many ways, My independence seems to vanish in the haze. But every now and then I feel so insecure, I know that I just need you like I've never done before." This slice of lyric is from a 1965 Beatle #1 hit - Yes or No.

Answer: Yes

"Help!" was #1 for three weeks in September in 1965 and the title song from their movie the same year. Originally, the movie was entitled "Eight Arms To Hold You" and I wonder what song that might have engendered. It couldn't possibly have been as snappy as "Help!".
4. "I live in an apartment on the ninety-ninth floor of my block And I sit at home looking out the window Imagining the world has stopped Then in flies a guy who's all dressed up like a Union Jack And says I've won five pounds if I have his kind of detergent pack" What song was this?

Answer: Get Off My Cloud

The Rolling Stones' second consecutive #1 song as a follow up to "Satisfaction". While composing this question, it seemed to me that while the piece of lyric I was typing was somewhat vaguely familiar, it wasn't as obvious as some of the others in this and other quizzes I've created.

Then it occurred to me... I hardly ever understood what Jagger was singin'! To me, the Stones songs were always about the music anyway.
5. "Well, _____ you look so fine, and I know it wouldn't take much time For you to help me _______, help me get her out of my heart" To whom are the Beach Boys appealing for help?

Answer: Rhonda

"Help Me, Rhonda" was #1 for two weeks in May. It was their second #1 after "I Get Around" in 1964 and preceded their third, "Good Vibrations" in 1966. They would then have to wait twelve years for the fourth and last chart topper, "Kokomo" in 1988. For all their popularity at the time, one might have thought their roster of #1's would have been more abundant.
6. "Sugarpie, honeybunch You know that I love you I can't help myself I love you and nobody else" What is the correct title of this #1 hit?

Answer: "I Can 't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)"

Five verses of this song start with the line "Sugarpie, honeybunch". After the second line, the third line on all five occasions is "I can't help myself". Normal rock song convention would lead one to assume that the title would be "Sugarpie, Honeybunch" but not this time. Holland-Dozier-Holland were the composers, the Four Tops recorded it and it was #1 for two weeks.
7. "_______ lives in a very bad part of town And everybody there tries to put my ______ down ______ I don't care what your daddy do 'Cause you know _______ girl I'm in love with you" What's the missing word?

Answer: Sloopy

Besides what was supplied in the question text, there was very little else in the way of lyrics for this #1 hit, "Hang On Sloopy" - pretty basic stuff but quite danceable. A slightly altered alternative was recorded by Little Caesar and the Consuls entitled "My Girl Sloopy". It peaked at #50 at about the same time in 1965.
8. Diana Ross of The Supremes sings these lines. "How can Mary tell me what to do When she lost her love so true And Flo, she don't know 'Cause the boy she loves is a Romeo." They come from which #1 song?

Answer: Back In My Arms Again

Holland-Dozier-Holland kept pouring out the words and music, The Supremes kept churning out the hits. This was their fifth #1 hit in a row although the string would end with their next release which was "Nothing But Heartaches". Clearly, they were a Motown cash cow! Mary and Flo, referred to in the lyrics, were the other members of the group - Mary Wilson and Flo Ballard.
9. "A-B-C (A-B-C) fallin' in love with you was easy for me (easy for me) And you can do it, too, it's easy (it's so easy) Like takin' candy from a baby" Len Barry recorded it. Can you name the song?

Answer: 1-2-3

"1-2-3" was a #2 hit for Barry who was the original lead singer for The Dovells when they recorded such hits as "Bristol Stomp" in 1961 and "You Can't Sit Down" in 1963 before embarking on his solo career.
Despite a fine voice, Barry's solo career didn't really take off. It's reported that he presently has a lounge act. Incidently, Holland-Dozier-Holland share writing credits on this song too. They were everywhere!
10. Tom Jones had three top 40 hits in 1965. His second was "What's New Pussycat". Of the lines below from the song, I've made one up. Can you identify it?

Answer: So keep on flashing that cute little pussycat smile

This song soared to #3 on the Billboard charts and established Jones as a entertainment force to be reckoned with. For his body of work in 1965, this Welsh native was awarded the Grammy for Best New Artist. He still is very active today both with his Vegas act and touring.
