Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was The Turtles first single intended to be in '65 in the USA, only to be released posthumously after they disbanded in '70?

Answer: Eve Of Destruction

"Eve Of Destruction" was deemed too serious for their first single release, so they decided on a lighthearted Bob Dylan tune instead, "It Ain't Me Babe". Is there such a thing as a lighthearted Bob Dylan tune?
2. What was another name for The Turtles that was released on White Whale in '70, with every member of the group being on that single?

Answer: The Dedications

The Dedications' "Teardrops" was on White Whale 340 released in February '70; so far only promo copies seem to exist. This classic doowopper would've fit quite well on The Turtles' "Battle Of The Bands" album.
It was also released on the "Happy Together Again" album on Sire in '74 in the USA and Canada.
The Christmas Spirit released a Christmas song titled "Christmas Is My Time Of Year" on White Whale in December '68. I met Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman on a reunion tour with Herman's Hermits (Peter Noone), Eric Burdon, The Grass Roots, and the Turtles at the Orpheum Theatre in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada circa 2000. I talked with Howard Kaylan about The Christmas Spirit, and he mentioned it was himself, Linda Ronstadt, another member of The Stone Poneys, but no other member of The Turtles including Mark Volman was involved. There may have been a member of a future Eagles on there as well, but I'm not sure.
3. What was the first label "Louie, Louie" was on by Paul Revere and The Raiders?

Answer: Sande

Before Paul Revere and The Raiders ended up on Columbia, they started recording for Gardena. They were basically an instrumental band back in '61. Then in '63 Paul Revere And The Raiders and The Kingsmen raced one another to record "Louie, Louie", and see who would have the bigger hit. Unfortunately for the Raiders it was released on the Sande label, a rinky dink operation, and The Kingsmen were on the Wand label, a much bigger label.
4. For which song was the name "Paul Revere and the Raiders" dropped, to be released as by just "The Raiders"?

Answer: Just Seventeen

"Just Seventeen" was the first and "Indian Reservation" was the third release with just The Raiders name.
5. Which song was deleted on the second pressing of the "Jefferson Airplane Takes Off" album in the USA?

Answer: Runnin' Round This World

Evidently RCA did not like the lyric "The nights I've spent with you have been fantastic trips" on "Runnin' Round This World", so RCA cut the song from the album on their next pressing.
"Let Me In" was re-recorded without their objectionable lyrics on that one as well.
What did RCA think "White Rabbit" was all about then?
6. What was the original title of "Somebody To Love" covered by the Jefferson Airplane in the USA?

Answer: Someone To Love

Grace Slick's Great Society, her first band, recorded it as "Someone To Love" on the North Beach label in '66.
7. What was the title of The Lovin' Spoonful's first single in the USA without John Sebastian?

Answer: Never Going Back

John Sebastian went on to a solo career after he split from The Lovin' Spoonful. He recorded "She's A Lady" as his first single for Kama Sutra.
8. Which Lovin' Spoonful song comes from "You're A Big Boy Now" film?

Answer: Darling Be Home Soon

"Darling Be Home Soon" was also a Top Twenty hit on Billboard.
"Pow" was from the movie "What's Up Tiger Lily".
9. What was the first Bob Dylan song The Grass Roots covered either on an album or single in the USA?

Answer: Mr. Jones (A Ballad Of A Thin Man)

"Mr. Jones (A Ballad Of A Thin Man)" their first release in '65 was not a hit, but their next single would be "Where Were You When I Needed You".
10. What was The Grass Roots' biggest hit on Billboard's Top 40 in the 70s?

Answer: Sooner Or Later

"Sooner Or Later" gets the nod at Number nine on Billboard in '71.
"Temptation Eyes" comes in at Number 15 in '71.
"Two Divided By Love" is just behind at 16 in '71.
"Heaven Knows" made it at Number 24 in late '69 going into '70.
