Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Loco-Motion just takes "a little bit of rhythm and a lot of soul". First recorded by Little Eva in 1962 and later by Kylie Minogue, which rock band recorded it in 1974?

Answer: Grand Funk Railroad

"Loco-Motion" was written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin and recorded first by Little Eva for her 1962 album "Lllloco-Motion". It did remarkably well and charted in top position on the US Billboard Hot 100, US Cash Box Top 100 as well as the Canadian and Norwegian charts.

Despite being covered by artists such as The Vernons Girls and Sylvie Vartan, it would only top the charts again over a decade later when Grand Funk Railroad took their rock version from their album "Shinin' On" to top position on the US Billboard Hot 100, US Cash Box Top 100 and Canadian charts. Kylie Minogue would cover it in the late 1980s for her debut album "Kylie" and take it to the top of the Australian, Canadian, Finnish, Irish, Japanese, Peruvian and South African charts.

Her version only managed a third position in the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. It is remarkable that this song managed to reach the US top five in three different decades, by three different artists.
2. "Soul Man", first made famous by Sam & Dave in 1967 and recorded by James Brown in 1978 was co-written by which soul musician, who portrayed a character on the animated series "South Park"?

Answer: Isaac Hayes

Isaac Hayes composed "Soul Man" together with David Porter. Sam & Dave took it to number two on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and the song received a Grammy Award in 1968 for Best Rhythm & Blues Group Performance, Vocal or Instrumental. It beat out songs by Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, Booker T. & the M.G.'s and Smokey Robinson & the Miracles. James Brown would take the song to top position on the US Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart in 1978.

In his illustrious career, Isaac Hayes was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, won an Academy Award for Best Music for the theme from "Shaft", won a Golden Globe award, three Grammy Awards and was even nominated for a NAACP Image award for his portrayal of the character Chef in the animated series "South Park".
3. "Body and Soul" is the title track of the EP of the same name released by The Sisters of Mercy in 1984. The band consisted of, among others, Andrew Eldritch and Wayne Hussey who went on to front which slightly more mainstream goth-rock band?

Answer: The Mission

"Body and Soul" was the band's third EP. The song itself featured on the EP, but was also included on the 1993 compilation album "A Slight Case of Overbombing: Greatest Hits Volume One".

The Sisters of Mercy are a British goth-rock band formed in 1980 by Andrew Eldritch and Gary Marx. Wayne Hussey joined the band in 1983 as a guitarist and then together with bass guitarist Craig Adams split with Eldritch two years later and formed his own band called The Sisterhood. The name was changed soon afterwards to The Mission. The Sisters of Mercy recorded only three studio albums between 1985 and 1990 and managed one US number one hit for the song "More" from their 1990 album "Vision Thing". The Mission went on to record eleven studio albums between 1986 and 2016.
4. Complete the lyrics of the 1983 song "Heart and Soul" made famous by the band Huey Lewis and the News: "Cause she's heart and soul She's ___ ___ ____ She's got it all, hot loving every night Woah Woaaah"

Answer: Hard to hold

"Heart and Soul" was written by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn, who together wrote a number of hit singles during the 1970s and 1980s for acts like Suzi Quatro, The Sweet, Smokie, Toni Basil and Tina Turner. It was first recorded by the band Exile in 1981 for the album of the same name, but failed on the charts, not even cracking the top 100. The Busboys recorded it a year later for their album "American Worker". Huey Lewis and the News recorded it for their 1983 album "Sports" and it went to number one on US Billboard Top Tracks chart.
5. In the 1947 Merle Travis song "Sixteen Tons", covered by Tennessee Ernie Ford in 1955, he owed his soul to what entity?

Answer: Company store

Merle Travis wrote and recorded "Sixteen Tons" for his 1947 album " Folk Songs of the Hills". Popular lines in the song were attributed to his brother and father, who was a coal miner. Tennessee Ernie Ford went on to record the song in 1955 and it proved to be hugely successful, holding fast at top position on the US Billboard Country Music chart for ten weeks. It then went on to hold the top position on the US Billboard Pop chart for a further eight weeks as well as an extended period at the top of the UK Singles chart. This song has been covered by a vast amount of artists over a number of decades including the likes of Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Tom Jones, Memento Mori (Swedish doom metal band), Robbie Williams and Tom Morello, guitarist for rock band Rage Against the Machine.

"You load sixteen tons, what do you get
Another day older and deeper in debt
Saint Peter don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I owe my soul to the company store"
6. Which Metallica song contains the children's bedtime prayer "Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep"? "Now I lay me down to sleep I pray the Lord my soul to keep If I die before I wake I pray the Lord my soul to take"

It truly is a popular song though, "Rolling Stone" magazine has it on their "500 greatest Songs of All Time" list and it was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "500 Songs That Shaped Rock" list. The music video was only the band's second music video and it won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Hard Rock Video in 1992.

The children's bedtime prayer "Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep" was composed in the 18th century and one of the earliest known versions appears in an essay entitled "The Spectator" in 1711 written by Joseph Addison.
7. "Still like that old time rock'n' roll/ That kind of music just soothes the soul" is the chorus from Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet band's 1979 song "Old Time Rock and Roll". It featured on the soundtrack of which 1980s Tom Cruise film?

The album itself did fairly well and managed a fourth spot on the US Billboard 200 album chart.

"Risky Business" featuring Tom Cruise and Rebecca De Mornay was not the first movie Cruise acted in, but it would prove to be the movie that set him on the path to stardom. He was nominated for a Golden Globe award for his role in the film, but lost out to Michael Caine for his role as Frank Bryant in the film "Educating Rita".

Reaching fifth position on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, it proved to be his biggest hit in a long and illustrious career. Covered by a wide variety of artists such as Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen, Ike & Tina, Michael Bolton, Rod Stewart and the Rolling Stones, it was the version by Uncle Kracker in 2003 that would race up the charts.

Despite reaching top position on the US Billboard Adult Contemporary chart and second place on the US Billboard Adult Top 40 chart, it only managed a ninth spot on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, four positions lower than the Dobie Grey version. Uncle Kracker's version, recorded for his "No Stranger to Shame" album, actually featured Dobie Grey singing the last verse of the song.

The song features on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame list of "500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll".

The song reached number one on the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and third position on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. It featured on the soundtrack of the 1980 film "Urban Cowboy" featuring John Travolta and Debra Winger.
