The Housemartins Trivia Quiz

Before Paul Heaton joined the Beautiful South and Norman Cook became Fatboy Slim, they were both in a band called the Housemartins. I grew up listening to them, and decided to write a quiz about them.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What, according to the Housemartins' debut album, was the score between London and Hull?

Answer: London 0 Hull 4

The title is partly a reference to the city where the band were based, and partly a reference to Paul Heaton's quote that the Housemartins were the 'fourth best band in Hull'. (Everything But the Girl, the Marine Girls - both of whom featured Tracey Thorn - and the Red Guitars were apparently the Top Three.)
2. Which comedian has a cameo in the 'Happy Hour' video?

Answer: Phill Jupitus

'Happy Hour' features both stop-motion animation and live action sequences. If you look carefully, you can see Phill Jupitus reading a newspaper.
3. Which song, not to be confused with a certain song by Burt Bacharach, is about Paul Heaton's school days?

Answer: There Is Always Something There to Remind Me

The video of 'There Is Always Something There to Remind Me' has the band dressed up as teachers. It features the line 'Thought my name was Peter/The time that I was there/I told him it was Paul/But he didn't seem to care.' The cover for the single - the band's final single - was drawn by Paul Warhurst, the bassist with Hull band the Gargoyles.
4. The Housemartins' only Number One single was a cover of 'Caravan of Love'. Who sang the original?

Answer: Isley-Jasper-Isley

'Caravan of Love' is notable in that, along with 'Only You' by the Flying Pickets, it is one of the only a cappella songs to reach Number One in the UK charts. The video was filmed in a church, with crosses shaved into the band's hair (Paul Heaton cited Christianity as one of his main influences during his time in the Housemartins, along with Karl Marx).

The band also covered 'You've Got a Friend' by Carole King, 'He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother' by the Hollies, and 'I'll Be Your Shelter' by Luther Ingram.
5. Which song on the band's second album was an attack on the Royal Family?

Answer: The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death

'The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death' is the title track of the album of the same name, and is one of the Housemartins' many political songs. The chorus runs as follows: 'The people who grinned themselves to death/Smiled so much, they failed to take a breath/And even when their kids were starving/They still thought the Queen was charming'.

As for the other answers, 'The Light Is Always Green', 'We're Not Going Down' and 'Johannesburg' are all tracks on the same album.
6. Which band member sang on the chorus of 'Build'?

Answer: Dave Hemingway

Dave Hemingway was one of the founding members of the Beautiful South, along with Paul Heaton and roadie Sean Welch, who played bass. Both Hemingway and Whitaker were in the same class at school. When Whitaker left the Housemartins, Dave Rotheray - Hemingway's bandmate in the Newpolitans, and another future Beautiful South member - recommended Hemingway to Stan Cullimore as a replacement. Whitaker was later asked if he wanted to join the Beautiful South, but declined.
7. Paul Heaton and Dave Hemingway joined the Beautiful South, Norman Cook got into dance music under various names, but what did Stan Cullimore do after the Housemartins split?

Answer: Wrote children's books

Stan Cullimore has written over a hundred children's books, with various collaborators and illustrators, mainly aimed at early readers. He has also written music for children's television programmes.

Cullimore has never managed a pet shop, but after leaving the band, he ran a wholefood shop. However, it went out of business after five years.
8. Which video featured Hugh Whittaker having a sack thrown over his head by Dave Hemingway, the new drummer?

Answer: Five Get Over Excited

Dave Hemingway replaced High Whitaker as the band's drummer, and the band made light of this by having Dave 'kidnap' Hugh while the band are walking down an alleyway in the video. Hugh is shown jumping around in the sack at various points during the video.
9. Which band member was imprisoned for attacking a man with an axe and setting fire to his house?

Answer: Hugh Whitaker

Whitaker was imprisoned for assault after attacking James Hewitt, a former business partner, with an axe as revenge for cheating him. He also set fire to Hewitt's house on three separate occasions. After serving his sentence, he moved to Leeds and joined local band Percy.
10. What was the name of the greatest hits album released after the Housemartins split up?

Answer: Now That's What I Call Quite Good

'Now That's What I Call Quite Good' featured both live and studio versions of various songs by the band, both singles and B-sides, as well as a few covers. A further compilation, 'Happy Hour: The Collection', was released in 2011, but it was without the band's approval and Paul Heaton described it as 'an absolute sham'. ('Irk the Purists' is a song by Half Man Half Biscuit.)
