Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Although Tommy Scott was Space's lead singer and songwriter, guitarist Jamie Murphy also wrote and sang lead vocals on some of the songs on 'Spiders'. Which of these songs does NOT feature Jamie on lead vocals?

Answer: Drop Dead

Jamie also sings on 'Lovechild of the Queen' and 'Voodoo Roller'. None of his songs have ever been released as singles, though 'Kill Me' was a B-side on 'Money', the first song to be released as a single from 'Spiders'.
2. Which single from 'Spiders' was originally going to be a B-side?

Answer: Female of the Species

Believe it or not, the single that made Space famous nearly never happened. According to keyboardist Franny Griffiths in an interview in "Q Magazine" in 1996: "Originally, it was going to be a B-side, but it seemed obvious to me that the record company wanted it to be a single."
3. Franny Griffiths sings lead vocals on 'Growler', the album's closing track.

Answer: False

'Growler' is a dance/techno instrumental. It was Jamie's favourite song on 'Spiders', and the rest of the band would leave the stage while Franny performed it solo live.
4. On which fast-talking, fast-moving cartoon character did Tommy Scott base his voice for 'Neighbourhood'?

Answer: Speedy Gonzales

In an interview for "Live & Kicking" magazine in 1996, Tommy said, "Speedy Gonzales is boss and I love the way he talks. That's where I get my voice for most of our songs." Films and cartoons in general were often cited by the band as a major influence on their music.
5. In 'Charlie M', Tommy sings about seeing several celebrities in various gruesome situations. Which one of these celebrities is NOT mentioned in the song?

Answer: Tom Jones

'I can see Madonna staring down a shotgun
Now she's not feeling so sexy, now she wants to be a nun
I can see George Best, trying to give the drink a rest
Now he's down the station, failing a blood test.'

See also:

'There goes Kennedy, looking for a remedy
Someone blew his head off, and now he's in a cemetery.'

'Charlie M' was drummer Andy Parle's favourite song on the album. Other celebrities mentioned in it are Charlie Manson, Elvis Presley and Colonel Tom Parker. While Tommy has sung about and with Tom Jones, he didn't get a mention on 'Charlie M'.
6. Does 'Spiders' feature a song of the same name?

Answer: No

There is a Space song called 'Spiders', but it is a B-side on 'Me & You Vs the World'. There is an alternative version of the song called 'Turn Me On to Spiders', which was one of the B-sides on the original release of 'Neighbourhood'.
7. Which single from 'Spiders' had artwork featuring Tommy's dog, a bus stop, and one of the band's roadies dressed as a vicar?

Answer: Neighbourhood

Judy, a Jack Russell terrier, appeared on the inlay of the CD. The vicar at the front of the bus stop queue on the cover of 'Neighbourhood' is an allusion to the lyric 'In 666, there lives a Mr Miller / He's a local vicar and a serial killer'. He is played by David 'Yorkie' Palmer, Franny's keyboard technician, who sang backing vocals on some of Space's songs.
8. In 'Me & You Vs The World', what magazine does the narrator use to hit the shop owner on the head?

Answer: Woman's Weekly

From the lyrics:
'I met him next
Took a bullet in the chest
So I hit him on the head with the only thing that was anywhere near me
A tin of baked beans and a Woman's Weekly.'
9. In what year was 'Spiders' released in the UK?

Answer: 1996

'Spiders' was released on 16th September 1996, peaking at number five in the UK charts. It was released on the now-defunct label Gut Records, which also played home to Aswad, Right Said Fred, and Tom Jones.
10. The final single to be released from 'Spiders' was 'Dark Clouds'. When the band performed the song on 'Top of the Pops' in 1997, which band member was missing and had to be replaced by a substitute musician?

Answer: Jamie Murphy

Jamie was in hospital, having suffered from a drink and drug-induced nervous breakdown. Space's manager brought in Joe, a local musician from a band called Jub Jub, to temporarily replace Jamie on tour and for Space's performances on 'Dark Clouds' on TV. During the US tour, Tommy lost his voice, and Space had to cancel the tour and return home to the UK. Two months later, Tommy got his voice back, and Jamie rejoined the band.
