Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Singing The Blues" was both a country and pop hit in 1956. What two artists took this classic to the top of their respective charts?

Answer: Marty Robbins and Guy Mitchell

Marty and Guy were label mates on Columbia Records and Mitch Miller, the top producer for Columbia, was noted for producing pop covers of country hits. Marty went on to become a country legend and Guy had a few more hits, including a cover of Ray Price's "Heartaches By The Number".
2. Hank Williams topped the country charts with his rendition of an old song called "Lovesick Blues". What modern country star had a top 25 country hit with it nearly 45 years later?

Answer: George Strait

Hank Williams sang "Lovesick Blues" on his debut Grand Ole Opry appearance and received several encores. George Strait's cover in 1992 peaked at number 24 on the Billboard Country Chart.
3. In the 1940s The Glenn Miller Orchestra put their own spin on an old W.C. Handy song. What was the title of their version?

Answer: St. Louis Blues March

"St. Louis Blues March" is the theme song for broadcasts of the St. Louis Blues hockey team's games and is a staple of marching bands everywhere--especially in the St. Louis area. Ironically, according to blues historians W.C. Handy never even set foot in St. Louis!
4. On the album "Cheap Thrills" the late, great Janis Joplin sings a classic blues song called "Turtle Blues". What was the name of Janis' group?

Answer: Big Brother and the Holding Company

"Cheap Thrills" was the album that established Janis Joplin as a rock superstar. Her rendition of "Piece of My Heart" was a major hit and Janis went on to become another legend whose life ended tragically....and much too soon.
5. Merle Haggard had a hit single with a cover of an old Jimmie Rodgers song about a state that gave him the blues. What was the song?

Answer: California Blues

Merle Haggard's album "Same Train, A Different Time" was a tribute to the man known as "The Father of Country Music" and "The Singing Brakeman". Bis version of "California Blues" didn't crack the Top 40 country chart but Merle's love of Rodgers' music was obvious.
6. Eddie Cochran and Alan Jackson both had hits with this "seasonal" song. Cochran's was the original rock and roll hit and Jackson's was a country version done 36 years later. What was the song?

Answer: Summertime Blues

"Summertime Blues" was the late Eddie Cochran's biggest hit, reaching number eight on the Billboard Pop Charts. But Alan Jackson's country take on the song went to number one on the country chart and remained there for three weeks. Eddie tragically died in a car crash in England in 1960, but his edgy rockabilly style is fondly remembered by his fans.
7. What legendary crooner had a number one hit in 1955 with "Learnin The Blues"?

Answer: Frank Sinatra

Frank's career spanned an amazing seven decades. Present day crooners like Michael Buble' and Harry Connick, Jr. are quick to acknowledge his influence.
8. Johnny Cash's studio version of this song reached number four on the country charts in in 1956, but his live recording went all the way to number one 12 years later. What was it?

Answer: Folsom Prison Blues

Johnny Cash never did prison time, but he gave many concerts in prisons and his live albums from Folsom and San Quentin were huge successes.
9. According to the title, what night of the week gave John Conlee the blues?

Answer: Friday Night Blues

John Conlee was one of the most successful country artists of the 70s and 80s, yet he still maintained his mortician's license for years after launching his singing career. "Friday Night Blues" peaked at number two on the Billboard Country Chart in the spring of 1980.
10. What legendary Southern rock group made "Statesboro Blues" a regular part of their live concerts?

Answer: The Allman Brothers

In addition to his work with his brothers, Duane Allman was a session guitarist at the legendary Muscle Shoals recording studio in Alabama. His tragic death in a motorcycle crash at age 34 left a huge void in the music world and the Allmans were never the same.
