Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Back In Black"
Answer: AC/DC
"Back In Black" was the title track of the band's 1980 album, their first with Brian Johnson replacing the recently deceased Bon Scott. Although the track wasn't a great chart mover for the boys, it is a fan favourite live and as well as being covered by many rock bands, has also been covered by artists as diverse as Shakira and Anastacia.
2. "Black Magic Woman"
Answer: Fleetwood Mac
Although the Santana version of this track from 1970 is probably better known, it was written by Peter Green and originally done by his band, Fleetwood Mac, reaching number 37 on the UK charts in 1968.
3. "Black Betty"
Answer: Ram Jam
The earliest known recording of this song is by James "Iron Head" Baker from 1933, and is well worth checking out. Blues purists will know the 1939 version by Leadbelly, and my generation remembers Ram Jam from 1977. Kids younger than me look to the 2002 version by Tom Jones, but whichever artist you associate with the track, there's no denying the greatness and the simplicity of it. Ram Jam reached the top ten in UK, Australia and New Zealand and this turned out to be their only hit.
4. "Black Night"
Answer: Deep Purple
When one considers some of the great tracks released by the band over the years, it is quite a surprise to discover that this track is the band's only ever Irish top ten hit and their highest ever UK chart hit, hitting number two in 1970, kept off the top spot by Freda Payne and "Band Of Gold". Deep Purple's only other UK top ten hit was "Strange Kind Of Woman" in 1971.
In USA, "Black Night" reached number 66 on the Billboard charts.
5. "Blackberry Way"
Answer: The Move
Written by one of my musical heroes, Roy Wood, "Blackberry Way" was a UK number one for The Move in 1969. Multi instrumentalist, Wood went on to form the original Electric Light Orchestra and Wizzard in the 1970s, and was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame as a member of ELO.
6. "Back To Black"
Answer: Amy Winehouse
Released in 2007 from her second and final album, also entitled "Back To Black", this song hit the top ten in UK, but didn't chart in USA or Canada. The biggest success came in Greece, where it was a number one hit. The song is believed to be about Winehouse seeking solace in heroin after her relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil ended.
7. "Paint It Black"
Answer: The Rolling Stones
From 1966, this huge hit by the Stones hit number one in both UK and USA as well as becoming the first number one in both countries to feature a sitar, as played by Brian Jones.
8. "Blackbird"
Answer: The Beatles
From the 1968 album, "The Beatles", also known as "The White Album", this track is actually a Paul McCartney solo track, with none of the other members of the band appearing on it. There have been many cover versions, but for me the best is by Crosby, Stills and Nash (and Young).
9. "Black Hole Sun"
Answer: Soundgarden
Taken from the band's 1994 album, "Superunknown", this track showed the late Chris Cornell at his best. It was a top ten hit in Australia, USA, Ireland and Canada, and only just missed out in UK. Cornell is also known for his solo work as well as working with Audioslave and Temple Of The Dog.
10. "Black Sabbath"
Answer: Black Sabbath
"Black Sabbath", by Black Sabbath, from the album "Black Sabbath" in 1970 is one of the band's most popular live tracks and is performed at least once on every tour. The track didn't chart when released as a single, but did raise public awareness ready for their second album and single, "Paranoid", also in 1970.
