Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our title song begins with the words "Black is the Color..." This was a folk hit by Joan Baez in 1962, but many artists have recorded this folk classic. What completes the title in many versions?

Answer: of my True Love's Hair

This song comes from America's Appalachian region and first appeared around 1915, but most musicologists agree that it probably originated in Scotland. Many themes and melodies of Appalachia were brought to America by Scottish and Scots-Irish settlers. Burl Ives recorded it on a 1944 album, and Nina Simone also recorded a popular version in 1959.
2. We'll stay with Joan Baez for the next question over a song from her "In Concert 2" album from 1963. The song is about a man wrongly executed for a killing. The chorus laments of his lover, "She walks these hills (...), she visits my grave when the night winds wail. Nobody knows, nobody sees. Nobody knows but me." Name the song.

Answer: Long Black Veil

"Long Black Veil" was first recorded by Lefty Frizzell in 1959, and has been covered a multitude of times. Besides Baez', the song has appeared on albums by Burl Ives, Johnny Cash, The Band, and even Mick Jagger, among dozens of others.
3. Which of the following is a British Invasion megahit from 1966, reaching number one in both the UK and US? "No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue. I could not foresee this thing happening to you."

Answer: The Rolling Stones' "Paint It Black"

Although Jagger says he wrote the song about a fictional girl's funeral, it has been variously interpreted to be about Jesus, drugs, Vietnam, or a depressed unemployed painter.
4. This 1972 hit for the Hollies includes the lyrics: "Well, the DA was pumping my left hand and she was holding my right. Well I told her 'Don't get scared 'Cause you're gonna get spared, I'm gonna be forgiven...'" Pick the long title of this song, written in the style of Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Answer: Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress

Allan Clarke, one of the authors of "Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress," was one of the founders of the Hollies, along with Graham Nash. Wikipedia lists 20 individuals as either Members or Past Members of the group, that became active in 1962. Originally formed in Manchester, England, the Hollies have had such hits as "Just One Look," "Carrie Anne," "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother," and "The Air That I Breathe."
5. Identify the group and title for these lyrics: "I'd like to hear some funky Dixieland / Pretty momma come and take me by the hand".

Answer: Doobie Brothers' "Black Water"

A 1974 release, "Black Water" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in March of 1975. Also in 1974, Jeff Baxter came to the Doobie Brothers from Steely Dan, who was breaking up. The Doobie Brothers originated in the San Jose area around 1969-70.
6. Back to folk music. This 1963 hit by the Kingston Trio is about "a mountain of a man... who could preach hot hell or freezin' snow." Singing "You got to walk that lonesome valley, you got to walk it by yourself...," according to the title of the song, who "was my old man"?

Answer: The Reverend Mr. Black

Of course, Johnny Cash, "The Man in Black," also covered "The Reverend Mr. Black" on a 1981 album called "The Baron." It's a natural. Cash also recorded a song entitled "The Man in Black" in 1971, but it is the Kingston Trio's recording that I wanted for this quiz.
7. How about a real old standard? Glenn Miller first recorded "That Old Black Magic" in 1942. Can you tell which pair of singers I've listed that has two vocalists who have NEVER recorded this classic? The pairs are NOT INTENDED as duets, but rather as simply pairs of singers.

Answer: all of these have recorded it

"That Old Black Magic" has also been recorded by Judy Garland, Cab Calloway, Johnny Mathis, Bobby Rydell, Sarah Vaughn, Mel Torme, Tom Jones, Rod Stewart, the Muppets, and Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs.
8. Which country singer, better known for "Big Bad John" and breakfast sausage, recorded "Little Black Book" in 1962?

Answer: Jimmy Dean

From 1963 to 1966 Dean had his own television show on ABC ("The Jimmy Dean Show"). "Big Bad John" was his best-known hit, but he also had a hit with "PT 109," also recorded in '62. Jimmie Dean passed away in 2010.
9. Originally released by Fleetwood Mac in 1968, this song became even more popular when combined as a medley with an adaptation of Gabor Szabo's "Gypsy Queen." Name the artist and song whose lyrics include: "You got your spell on me, baby, / Turnin' my heart into stone."

Answer: Santana's "Black Magic Woman"

Fleetwood Mac founder Peter Green wrote the song and performed the lead in the original. Santana's version was often heard in the US on the radio without the "Gypsy Queen" portion, which reduced the running time from about five and a half to six minutes, to about three.
10. Inspired by racial tensions in the US in 1968, our last song was a cut on an album called the "White Album." To whom do the lyrics say, "All your life / You were only waiting for this moment to arrive"?

Answer: Blackbird

"The Beatles" was a two-disc album released in '68. Paul McCartney was in Scotland when he wrote "Blackbird." The guitar accompaniment was inspired by a movement for the lute from Johann Sebastian Bach's "Suite in E Minor."
