Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This UK number one single written by Bob Geldof was inspired by a school shooting. What is its name?

Answer: I Don't Like Mondays

On 29 January 1979, sixteen-year-old Brenda Ann Spencer shot and killed two adults and injured eight children and a police officer at an elementary school in San Diego, California. Later questioned about her motives, Spencer said "I don't like Mondays; this livens up the day".

Tori Amos recorded a cover of the song, which was featured in an episode of The West Wing about a bomb blast at a college. It's a pretty eerie version.
2. Complete the chorus of the Rolling Stones ballad "Ruby Tuesday": "Goodbye Ruby Tuesday. Who could hang a name on you? When you change with every new day. __________"

Answer: Still I'm gonna miss you.

Paired with "Let's Spend the Night Together", the single reached number 1 in the US and number 3 in the UK. It was ranked 303 in Rolling Stone magazine's 2004 list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
3. Simon and Garfunkel's "Wednesday Morning, 3 a.m." is a monologue about a man watching his lover sleep, knowing that it is their last night together. Why is he going to leave her in the morning?

Answer: He held up a liquor store

"For I know at the first light of dawn I'll be leaving
And tonight will be all I have left to recall.
Oh what have I done, why have I done it?
I've committed a crime, broken the law.
For twenty five dollars and pieces of silver
I held up and robbed a hard liquor store."

It's not entirely clear, but it sounds like he's about to go on the run. Although I guess he could be going to prison that morning. Assuming between his arrest and trial he got bail. Either way, an interesting song.
4. David Bowie's song "Thursday's Child" was recorded on the 1999 album "hours...". But what was the song originally written for?

Answer: A computer game

The song, along with much of the album's content, was written for the computer game "Omikron - The Nomad Soul". Bowie also contributed to the game's design and storyline, and made cameo appearances as two different characters in the game.
5. Which Australian band recorded the upbeat rock and roll hit "Friday On My Mind"?

Answer: The Easybeats

"Friday On My Mind" reached number 1 on the Australian charts in 1966, and also made the top 20 in the UK and USA. It was voted the best Australian song of all time by the Australasian Performing Right Association in 2001. I wouldn't go that far myself, but it's still a great song to put on when the working week is dragging you down.
6. According to the title of Elton John's glam rock song, what is Saturday night alright for?

Answer: Fighting

"Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" was included on the 1973 album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". Several prominent cover versions have been recorded, most famously by Queen, The Who and Nickelback.
7. What is the highly political subject of U2's 1983 single "Sunday Bloody Sunday"?

Answer: The Troubles in Northern Ireland

U2 drummer Larry Mullen Jr explained the song as follows: "It's the strongest way of saying, 'How long? How long do we have to put up with this?' I don't care who's who - Catholics, Protestants, whatever. You know people are dying every single day through bitterness and hate, and we're saying why?"
8. Paul McCartney famously woke up one day with the melody for "Yesterday" fully formed in his head. It took several months to come up with the lyrics, though, and in the interim McCartney sung nonsense words. What was the provisional title for this hugely successful song?

Answer: Scrambled Eggs

According to the book "A Hard Day's Write" by Steve Turner, McCartney spent weeks playing the tune to people in the music industry to see if anyone recognised it, worried that he may have recalled something he heard long ago. Eventually he decided that, as no one else claimed credit, his subconscious must have 'written' the song in his sleep.
9. A popular song from which musical assures us "The sun'll come out tomorrow"?

Answer: Annie

OK, I'm going to make a confession. I do not own a copy of "Tomorrow" or any other song from Annie, but I needed something to round out the week.

Annie opened at the Alvin theatre on Broadway in 1977 and enjoyed a six year run--a record for the theatre that stood until 2009. It won Tony Awards for Best Musical and Best Score.
10. One of the oldest songs in my collection is the 1957 B-side "Everyday". Which Texan rock and roll singer/band first recorded this song?

Answer: Buddy Holly

Written by Buddy Holly and Norman Petty, "Everyday" was the B-side to Peggy Sue. It was ranked 236 in "Rolling Stone" magazine's 2004 list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
