Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first album ("Worst Case Scenario"), released in 1994: In "Suds & Soda", what is shouted about 159 times in the background throughout the song?

Answer: friday friday friday

This song was dEUS' first hit, the video was played on MTV several times and even made it into "Beavis & Butthead" (in that episode you could see beavis & butthead going: "Friday! Friday! Friday! Arh arh, yes, yes! Friday! Fridayyyy! Arh arh, yesss!" to this song).
Another Belgian band; Die Anarchistische Abendunterhaltung (DAAU), made an instrumental cover of "Suds & Soda" for cello, accordion, violin and clarinet.
2. "Fell madly in love with a couple of beautiful ..." (song: "Morticiachair")

Answer: ears

(its only variation)
This song "Morticiachair", is also known as "Rudy's Song", and I think it's the only song on "Worst Case Scenario" that's sung mostly by Rudy Trouvé.
3. "Cause it's so hard to keep the dream alive And if it all comes down to this how will (glamour survive)"

Answer: Hotel lounge (Be The Death Of Me)

The video for this song features the band fooling around in a hotel, with amongst others a scene where singer Tom Barman and bass player Stef K. Carlens are playing in a bathtub together...
On a sidenote, "Worst Case Scenario" is the one dEUS album that I have found in commercial record stores in exotic locations such as Norway and Canada, pretty impressive for a Belgian band to have their debut cd distributed that widely. Other bands that have managed this are a.o. Hoover (Hooverphonic) and Front 242.
4. "Looking nova when your fashion's old It's kinda early but the story's told"

Answer: Let's Get Lost

This is my personal favourite from this album. The album notes for this song say "untuned guitar ask Peter!", as far as I know this refers to Peter Vermeersch, who did a lot of work on all of the dEUS albums (including producing, mixing, clarinets etc.). And where there was Vermeersch back then, there was Vervloesem (Pierre), who provided amongst other things extra guitar and voices on this album.
5. The intro to this album is read by A. Fernandez, and is not in English, what language is it in?

Answer: French

Full text: Au niveau des côtes, l'épicontioplagie est rarement associée à une épitrocléite due à la répétition des mouvements de sécussion et de pronosupération. Au niveau de l'interligne radiocarpe, les luxations sont rares. This was probably taken from some French book on surgery and is basically about some bone problems which rarely happen.
6. Here starts the "my sister=my clock" part of the quiz, dEUS' second and possibly least popular album, released in 1995. "As the silver bullet finds the ..." (song: "Only A Colour To Her")

Answer: moose

First line from "Only A Colour To Her", the same song that brings us "a tipple steed duck", "a tattooed goose" and "my shaking hamster".
Interesting tidbit: This whole album was recorded in 5 days time and was originally intended to be a maxi single.
7. "I became too much in love with her and love turned me into ..."

Answer: sick sugar

From "Sick Sugar", words by Trouvé. This album consists mostly of all the band members doing their own little thing, which is why the tracks are so diverse in sound. For instance, the weirdest sounding tracks are probably those by Rudy Trouvé ("Almost White", "Sweetness" and "Void"), while the eerie instrumental tracks are the trademark of violin guy Klaas Janzoons ("How To Row A Cat" and "Sans Titre Pour Sira").
8. "headgear headhunter headiness heading headland headless headlight headline headlong headman headmaster headmistress head-office headphone headpiece headquarters headroom headshot headsman headstalk headstone headstrong head-waiter headway heady"

Answer: Healthinsurance

The lyrics to this song come straight from an English dictionary and mean absolutely nothing. (A common practice in alternative Belgian music it seems.)
9. "Her boyfriend takes lots of speed, and a little while ago he cast some kind of voodoo-spell on Stef. I got really scared, because I don't trust that South-American wizardry"

Answer: Glovesong

I can't say what *exactly* this song is about, at some point there's mention of a glove pair which should have 4 fingers on one hand and 6 on the other...
10. At the start of "The Horror Partyjokes" a man mysteriously credited only as 'Sergey' tells a tale about a monster called Wi. What language is being spoken?

Answer: Ukrainian

A last bit of info to close the "My Sister=My Clock" part of the quiz, the last track "Lorre In The Forest" is a recording of Rudy Trouvé's niece Lore singing.
11. On to "In A Bar Under The Sea", the third album, released in 1996 "my memory's a ..." (song: "Serpentine")

Answer: broken machine

Serpentine is about "unfaithfulness, and how difficult it is to have a lasting relationship".
Tom Barman got the inspiration for this song's lyrics from an interview with Sean Penn in which Penn said "You do it straight or you do it serpentine."
Sean Penn is one of Tom Barman's favourite actors.
12. "Talk for hours about the politics of ..." (song: "A Shocking Lack Thereof")

Answer: Mickey Mouse

Did you know Tom Barman was supposed to write a song together with Arno (another crazy belgian singer) for "Toy Story"?
Well three months after recording the demo for this song Tom was arrested and three days later Disney called and cancelled the deal for the song they were supposed to write.
About "A Shocking Lack Thereof", the music was written completely by Klaas Janzoons.
13. "Baby baby just drown me in your Sweet White."

Answer: I Don't Mind Whatever Happens

This song was recorded by a listener of radiostation Studio Brussel when dEUS were in France and played this song for Studio Brussel over the phone.
14. "He said: "No more loud music""

Answer: Theme From Turnpike

First of all, the music looped in this song is a sample of "Far Wells, Mill Valley" by Charles Mingus. The videoclip for this song shows two men walking along the Champs Elysées in Paris, Seymour Cassel (a comedian) and Sam Loewyck, a dancer from Les Ballets C de la B.

It was shown in belgian theatres as a short film before Trainspotting. Furthermore it was censored by MTV because Loewyck's dance resembles an epilepsy crisis and would be seen as 'making fun of' according to them. Lastly, there is NO actual movie called Turnpike that this is the theme for (yet).
15. What is the longest song on "In A Bar, Under The Sea"?

Answer: Gimme The Heat

Yup, it is "Gimme The Heat" with a bit over 7 full minutes!
On top of that 11 people play in this song, I don't think that's the record for most people on a dEUS song but it's impressive anyway, amongst them were the Smith quartet (a string quartet), Eric Drew Feldman and Pieter Lamot.
16. From "The Ideal Crash", a very personal album that accompanies the maturing of the performers, released in 1999. "Now the only thing I crave is an ..." (song: "Sister Dew")

Answer: embrace

It is said this song is about a guy killing his girlfriend.
Tom Barman has let out a lot about his past and present girlfriends on this album but don't worry, as far as we know he's never actually killed one.
17. "Wasted and wounded, this ain't no way to ..." (song: "One Advice, Space")

Answer: die

Kelvin Smits provided keyboards and the basic tunes for this song, he is a member of the duo "Cinerex", a trip-hop band whose first album Tom Barman did some vocals and guitar for.
18. "They started spreading rumours about my state You know how it goes around this place, Now and then they just need someone to screw."

Answer: Let's See Who Goes Down First

This song is about a period in '98 when Tom Barman briefly lost it completely.
19. "Along with your smile, I took my belongings Along with the sunshine, I went away"

Answer: Dream Sequence #1

The song is called dream sequence because the chords came to Barman in a dream.
20. Where was "The Ideal Crash" recorded?

Answer: Spain

dEUS have a heart for Rhonda, most of the band members also speak Spanish surprisingly well.
