Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the hit on the flip side of "Don't Be Cruel," by Elvis Presley?

Answer: Hound Dog

It's hard to think of either side of this big seller as being the "B-side", but when the 45 was first released, "Hound Dog" was considered the flip side. Both sides charted, and both sides went to #1.
2. "Travelin' Man," a #1 hit for Ricky Nelson, had a top ten song on the other side. Can you name it?

Answer: Hello Mary Lou

"Hello Mary Lou" was written by Gene Pitney, and this 45 was the last one released under the name "Ricky Nelson." Future releases carried the name "Rick Nelson" since he was now an adult.
3. "I'm A Hog For You" cracked the top 40 in the fall of 1959 for the Coasters. What top 10 hit was on the B-side?

Answer: Poison Ivy

The Coasters took their name from the fact that all members hailed from the coast of California. They were previously known as the Robins, and had a sizable Rhythm and Blues hit under that name with "Smokey Joe's Cafe" in 1955 - a song which is now the namesake of a big hit musical spotlighting the music of its writers, Leiber and Stoller (who also wrote "Hound Dog", among many others).
4. The Everly Brothers enjoyed a double-sided top 10 hit in 1958. "Devoted To You", the planned A-side, made it to #10, while the B-side was a #1 song. Can you name the B-Side which became the A-side due to its success?

Answer: Bird Dog

The Everly Brothers actually began their careers as country recording artists while still students at West High School in Knoxville, Tennessee, USA. They recorded one country and western 45 for Columbia Records, which was a big bomb - and as such, is very rare and valuable today.
5. The late Ritchie Valens had a double-sided hit before his untimely death - one side was "La Bamba." What was the other?

Answer: Donna

Ritchie died in a plane crash on February 3, 1959, along with Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper. Both Waylon Jennings and Dion (DiMucci) were also supposed to be on board, but decided to travel by land instead that day.
An interesting bit of trivia about "Donna" - it peaked out at #2 on the US singles charts, and was held out of #1 thanks to "The Chipmunk Song" by the Chipmunks.
6. Pat Boone had a double-sided hit with "Chains Of Love" and what other song?

Answer: Friendly Persuasion

Pat, who is a direct descendant of Daniel Boone, enjoyed fame and fortune by re-recording rhythm and blues hits in a "toned down" version that moms and dads everywhere would approve of. His father-in-law was country star Red Foley.
7. Ricky Nelson strikes again - in addition to the aforementioned double-sided hit, "I Got A Feeling" and this ballad scored a top-10 double sider for him in late 1958.

Answer: Lonesome Town

Ricky Nelson is, so far, part of the only family in history to see three generations score a #1 song. His father, Ozzie Nelson, scored a #1 song in 1935 as a bandleader with a song called "And Then Some", and Ricky's twin sons recorded under the name "Nelson". Their song "Love And Affection" hit #1 in 1990.
8. The B-side of the Beatles' first US hit, "I Saw Her Standing There", hit the top 20 on the coattails of the A-side, which was #1 for 7 weeks. Can you name the A-side?

Answer: I Want To Hold Your Hand

At one point in 1964, the Beatles held down the entire top 5 on the Billboard singles charts with five different releases. This has not happened before or since.
9. The Monkees had two double-sided chart hits in their career - the B-sides which charted from them were "(I'm Not Your) Stepping Stone" (which hit #20) and "Words" (a #11 hit). What were the two A-sides of these two hits?

Answer: "I'm A Believer" and "Pleasant Valley Sunday"

Profits generated from the Monkees' franchise were used to fund the Jack Nicholson movie, "Easy Rider."
10. The old folk song "The Twelfth Of Never" made the top 10 as the B-side of a #1 Johnny Mathis song - and the #1 side was?

Answer: Chances Are

The LP "Johnny's Greatest Hits" by Johnny Mathis enjoyed one of the all-time longest consistent runs on the Billboard US Album chart, staying on the chart for more than a decade before finally falling off. It was also the first "Greatest Hits" LP to make it to #1.
