Answer: Louis Armstrong

Carol Channing sang "Hello Dolly" while playing the role of Dolly Levi when the play opened in January, 1964. Louis Armstrong sang a demo of the song for promotional purposes. Armstrong's record label released "Hello Dolly" as a single and it topped the charts for one week ending a 14 week run by The Beatles. Armstrong became the oldest singer to that date to chart a Number One single.
"Hello Dolly" went on to win a Grammy for "Song of the Year" in 1965. Armstrong earned Best Vocal Performance Male.
"I Want to Hold Your Hand", "She Loves You" and "Can't Buy Me Love" combined 14 weeks on the charts.

Barbra Streisand appeared in "Funny Girl" in 1964. Julie Andrews was seen in "The Sound of Music" and Sammy Davis Jr. was in the cast of "Golden Boy".
2. In May, 1964, "Love Me Do" by the Beatles topped the US Billboard charts for one week. Which female trio took the Number One spot the following week with "Chapel of Love"?

Answer: The Dixie Cups

"Chapel of Love" was originally written with The Ronettes in mind and recorded by Darlene Love in 1963. When the New Orleans based Dixie Cups recorded the song it became their first Number One single. The group was formed when sisters Rosa Lee and Barbara Ann Hawkins joined their cousin Joan Marie Johnson to form Little Miss and the Muffets. They inked a contract with Red Bird Records, changed their name and released "Chapel of Love" in April, 1964. Co-writers Jeff Barry and Ellie Greenwich were also producers of the recording along with producers Jerry Leiber Mike Stoller. After knocking "Love Me Do" from the top spot "Chapel of Love" remained at Number One for three weeks.
"Love Me Do" was the first single from The Beatles.
"Come See About Me" was a US Number One for The Supremes in December, 1964. The Chiffons had a Number One in 1963 with "He's So Fine" and The Angels topped the charts the same year with "My Boyfriend's Back".

Answer: Eve of Destruction

"Eve of Destruction" was originally offered to The Byrds. When they rejected it a version was recorded by The Turtles on their 1965 "It Ain't Me Babe" LP that only made it to Number 100. When Barry McGuire released his version backed by some of the leading session musicians in LA the song topped the US charts. Barry's original rough vocal was the one that was eventually released. Jan and Dean recorded a version on their 1965 "Folk 'n Roll" that used the same backing track as McGuire's recording. "Eve of Destruction" was Barry's only charting hit as a solo artist.
"Help" was released from the soundtrack of the 1965 movie of the same name. Despite being nominated for four Grammy awards "Help" did not win any in 1966.

Answer: "Strangers in the Night" by Frank Sinatra.

When singer and actress Melina Mercouri was offered "Strangers in the Night" she declined the song because she thought it should be done by a male singer. Frank Sinatra released a version which went to Number One and earned three Grammy Awards. Frank was not pleased with the song even though it was his first time topping the charts in over ten years. Among the session players on the song was Glen Campbell on guitar.
Nancy Sinatra sang a live version on "The Ed Sullivan Show" but "Strangers in the Night" was not recorded on any of her LPs.
After Sinatra knocked "Paperback Writer" from the top spot for one week it bounced back and replaced "Strangers in the Night" at Number One for another week.
"Everybody Loves Somebody" by Dean Martin replaced the Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night" at Number One in August, 1964. "Somethin' Stupid" made it to Number One in 1967 for Nancy Sinatra and Frank Sinatra. "The Candy Man" (1972) was the only Number One US single by Sammy Davis Jr.

Despite releasing seven studio albums "Ode to Billie Joe" was Bobbie Gentry's only US Top Ten single.

In 1967 they changed the name of the band to John Fred and His Playboy Band because Gary Lewis The Playboys had a hit in 1965 with "This Diamond Ring". John Fred collaborated with band mate Andrew Bernard to write "Judy in Disguise (With Glasses)". Although the song topped the US Billboard charts the band became known as a Novelty group and never had another hit single.

Musicians Dale Frashuer and Gary DeCarlo from The Glenwoods teamed up with Producer Paul Leka to compose the song. When a Southern disc jockey played "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" credited to a fictitious group called Steam the song gained momentum until it reached Number One.
"Something" was the first Beatles Number One to feature George Harrison as the composer. The band chose "Come Together" as the flip side.
"Nobody but Me" was a 1968 Number Eight single from The Human Beinz. Blues Magoos had a US Top Ten in 1967 with "(We Ain't Got) Nothin' Yet" and "Little Bit O' Soul" by The Music Explosion reached Number Two.
