Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which band did the legendary John Entwistle play bass for?

Answer: The Who

Entwistle is considered by many to be the best rock bassist of all-time. He was nicknamed "The Ox" because he tended to stand still on stage. Fellow Who member Pete Townsend even considered Entwistle the lead guitarist, because of his melodic lines. Entwhistle passed away in 2002, but his influence will always live on.
2. Chris Squire played bass for this progressive rock supergroup.

Answer: Yes

Here's an interesting fact : Chris Squire is the only member of Yes to appear on every one of their albums. While Yes isn't the most popular group out there, some great Squire basslines can be found in a lot of their songs.
3. Which Southern band did Berry Oakley play bass for?

Answer: Allman Brothers

Berry's bass playing style helped define the Allman Brothers' distinct instrumental sound, especially when they played live. Unfortunately, and perhaps ironically, Oakley died because of a motorcycle accident in 1972, very close to the Georgia location of Duane Allman's tragic crash a year earlier.
4. Which very influential band did Roger Glover play bass for?

Answer: Deep Purple

Glover, an underrated bassist in the hard rock circle, has produced and played on albums for the past 30 years. Deep Purple themselves were instrumental (no pun intended) to the formation of the heavy metal genre, though they did not consider themselves a band of the genre.
5. Can you name the British supergroup that Bill Wyman played bass for?

Answer: Rolling Stones

While he may not be the most talented bassist out there, Wyman has also played a number of other instruments (autoharp, guitar, cello to name a few) on solo albums. However, he tended to be more isolated from the Rolling Stones than any of the other members.
6. Geezer Butler was the bassist for which popular heavy metal band?

Answer: Black Sabbath

The name "Black Sabbath" actually comes from a song Butler wrote. Originally, Butler was a guitarist, but because of Tony Iommi, he picked up bass. This "Geezer" is still alive and playing.
7. Jack Bruce played bass for this very talented group.

Answer: Cream

Bruce is the a member of 60s supergroup Cream, with Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker. Bruce is another one of the best bassists in rock, as he wrote some of Cream's best songs ("White Room" (lyrics by poet Pete Brown) and "I Feel Free" to name a few). He has cited many influences, from classical (specifically J.S. Bach) to bebop.
8. John Deacon was the bassist for which band?

Answer: Queen

While overshadowed by frontman Freddy Mercury and talented guitarist Brian May, Deacon held his own on the four string. He didn't write much of Queen's material, but some of the songs he did write ("Another One Bites the Dust", "You're My Best Friend", and "I Want to Break Free") were hits.
9. Phil Lesh played bass for the lengthy career of which band?

Answer: Grateful Dead

Interesting fact : Lesh never played bass before joining the Dead. He held the same playing philosophy as Entwistle and Bruce, a classical/jazz influence, paired with a louder electrical sound, created a role much unlike the regular, pacing job rock bassists used to possess. He played bass for the Dead for over 30 years.
10. Can you name the Canadian band that Geddy Lee played bass for?

Answer: Rush

Lee tripled as the bassist, vocalist, and keyboardist for Rush. Though a lot of people do not like his voice, they're no denying that he can play bass. Some fans even suggest that he plays better when he's not singing, but I haven't been able to tell any signifcant difference.
