Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Beatles song did Paul admit he wrote as an ode to marijuana?

Answer: Got To Get You Into My Life

After trying marijuana, Paul had to get it into his life. "I was alone, I took a ride, I didn't know what I would find there. Another road where maybe I could see another kind of mind there." This comes from the McCartney biography "Many Years From Now" by Barry Miles.
2. Who played lead guitar on "Taxman"?

Answer: Paul

That's Paul's excellent riffs you're hearing. Geoff Emerick, in his book on the Beatles, "Here, There and Everywhere", says George couldn't get the solo quite right, so Paul stepped in.
3. What song was originally titled "Maharishi"?

Answer: Sexy Sadie

"Sexy Sadie, where have you gone? You made a fool of everyone." Written in India, John wrote the tune about his disenchantment with the Maharishi. But he began to feel that the attack was too personal, so he left the lyrics alone, except he changed "Maharishi" to "Sexy Sadie."
4. John wrote about his mother in the song "Julia". In what song did Paul mention his mother?

Answer: Let It Be

"Mother Mary comes to me, speaking words of wisdom, let it be." Many people think Paul is referring to the Virgin Mary in this song, but it's a simple reference to his mother, whose name, of course, was Mary.
5. What was the first song Ringo received a writing credit for?

Answer: What Goes On

Ringo threw in the lyric for a line or two, and Paul and John insisted he get writing credit. The song is credited to Lennon/McCartney/Starkey, Starkey being Ringo's last name. "Octopus's Garden" and "Don't Pass Me By" were written by Ringo, but long after "What Goes On." "It's All Too Much" was written by George.
6. What was the first song George ever wrote?

Answer: Don't Bother Me

"You Know What To Do" was the second song George wrote, and wasn't released until "Anthology I". "Old Brown Shoe" was written much later. "Do You Want To Know A Secret" was sung by George but written by John.
7. Who played saxophone on the song "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)"?

Answer: Brian Jones

The song was originally recorded in 1967, with Brian Jones doing his sax part on 8 June 1967. Jones died in 1969, and the song was released in 1970 as the "B" side to the single "Let It Be."
8. What Lennon/McCartney composition was given to the Rolling Stones and became their first hit song?

Answer: I Wanna Be Your Man

"I Wanna Be Your Man" was the Rolling Stones' first top twenty hit, reaching number 12 on the U.K. charts in 1963. Ringo later sang a Beatles' version of the tune.
9. Which number one Beatles hit was recorded in Paris?

Answer: Can't Buy Me Love

"Can't Buy Me Love" was written and recorded in January 1964 while the Beatles were in Paris. They were doing eighteen days of performances at the Olympia Theater. During their stay, they had an upright piano moved into their hotel suite so that writing could continue. Paul wrote this tune on that piano, and the song was recorded at the EMI studio in Paris.
10. What Lennon song had a working title of "That's A Nice Cap"?

Answer: It's Only Love

John and Paul often wrote silly lyrics just to help them remember the melody of a song they were working on. They would improve on the lyrics later. Thus "That's A Nice Cap" became "It's Only Love." John, by the way, always felt his lyrics for this song were weak, though he liked the melody.
