Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Pete Best was the Beatles' drummer from 1960 to 1962. Where was he born?

Answer: Madras

Randolph Peter Best was born in Madras, India, on November 24, 1941. His parents moved to Liverpool when Pete was about four years old.
2. Mona Best, Pete's mother, was extremely helpful in the early days of the Beatles. Which Liverpool club did she run?

Answer: the Casbah

The Casbah Club was a perfect place for the young Beatles to practice and to develop their style. The Jacaranda was a Liverpool club which was run by their first manager, Allan Williams. The Beatles would later become a legendary force during their time at the Cavern Club in Liverpool.
3. For which group did Pete Best play before he joined the Beatles?

Answer: The Blackjacks

Pete Best played at the Casbah with the Blackjacks for several months before he was asked to join the Beatles. The Beatles were impressed that Best owned a professional drum kit, and they needed a steady drummer. Ringo Starr played drums for Rory Storm & the Hurricanes before he joined the Beatles.
4. Who was the Beatles' semi-regular drummer before Pete Best joined the band?

Answer: Tommy Moore

Tommy Moore played with the "Silver Beetles" for about a month in 1960 before he decided to quit in order to return to his job as a forklift operator. Moore apparently didn't get along with John Lennon or Paul McCartney. Hanton was the drummer for Lennon's first band, the Quarrymen. Pete Best joined the Beatles in August 1960.
5. In August 1960, Pete Best accompanied the Beatles on their trip to Hamburg, Germany. Why was he deported two months later?

Answer: He set fire to a cinema.

While the Beatles were staying in Hamburg, they lived at a cheap movie theater called the Bambi Kino. Best reportedly was angry with the owner and accidentally set fire to the cinema. Best and McCartney spent several hours in a Hamburg jail and were ordered to leave Germany shortly thereafter.
6. In October 1961, Pete Best and the other Beatles backed British singer Tony Sheridan in a Hamburg recording session. What was so unusual about one of the songs, "Cry For a Shadow"?

Answer: It was a Lennon-Harrison composition

"Cry For a Shadow" was an instrumental song written by John Lennon and George Harrison. It was the only Lennon-Harrison composition officially released by the Beatles. Pete Best's drumming style can be heard quite clearly in this tune.
7. In August 1962, Pete Best was sacked by manager Brian Epstein. What was the reason for Best's firing?

Answer: Best's drumming wasn't good enough.

Pete Best was understandably upset when informed by Epstein that the other Beatles didn't think that his drumming was good enough. George Martin insisted that he didn't force Best to leave the band; Martin merely mentioned that he would hire a session drummer to replace Best on studio tracks. Ringo Starr officially replaced Best as the Beatles' drummer in mid-August 1962.
8. Pete Best's fans were irate after hearing the news about his sacking. Which Beatles' member received a black eye during a scuffle with fans?

Answer: George Harrison

Pete Best's fans shouted, "Best forever, Ringo never!" to protest Pete's dismissal. Harrison got his injury in a scuffle outside the Cavern Club in Liverpool. Ringo apparently never suffered any injuries from jilted Best fans.
9. Which member of the Beatles' inner circle nearly quit after hearing about the firing of Pete Best?

Answer: Neil Aspinall

Neil Aspinall, a good friend of Pete's, has been called the "Fifth Beatles" by several biographers. Aspinall served as a road manager, driver, and technician for the band. Pete Best, of all people, convinced Aspinall to remain with the Beatles after the sacking. Dick James became the Beatles' music publisher, Geoff Emerick was an engineering assistant to George Martin, and Klaus Voorman befriended the Beatles while they were in Hamburg.
10. After the Beatles had conquered the USA in 1964, Pete Best released an album. What was this record called?

Answer: "Best of the Beatles"

"Best of the Beatles" was a collection of 1950s hits and some original tunes by the Pete Best All-Stars. The album was released by Cameo Records but failed to sell very many copies. I would imagine it is a collector's item today.
