Answer: For Once in My Life

Born premature, Steveland Hardaway Judkins received too much oxygen in his incubator, which resulted in the loss of his vision, due to retinopathy of prematurity. Not to be held back by this, Stevie Wonder, as he later became known, was skilled in piano, drums and harmonica by the time he was nine. Co-written by Wonder, "For Once in My Life", was number two on both Pop and R and B charts. "Do You Love Me", by the Contours, placed at number 124 in 2005, up from 137 in 2004. "I Got You (I Feel Good)", by James Brown was number 167 in 2005, up from 422 in 2004, and "You Were on My Mind", by We Five was number 415 in 2005, down from 297 in 2004.
2. What song, up from number 389 in 2004, scored the number 187 spot in the 2005 Countdown? "Love is but the song we sing, And fear's the way we die. Answer: Get Together

Written by Chet Powers, "Get Together" was the only hit song for The Youngbloods, and it wasn't much of a hit the first time that it was released. The group, once the house band for the Café au GoGo in New York, only got their top ten hit when the song was re-released, after being used in a television commercial. "Come Together", by the Beatles, did not appear on the 2004 list, and was number 439 on the 2005 Countdown. "See You in September", by the Happenings, also didn't make it to the 2004 list, but scored number 236 on the 2005 Countdown. "Sealed with a Kiss", by Brian Hyland, was number 59 in 2005, down from 44 in 2004.
3. What song was 199 on the 2005 Countdown, up from 322 on the 2004 list? "What makes you think love will end, When you know that my whole life depends, On you? (On you.)"

Answer: Never My Love

When the 13 man group known as The Men split up, before they'd even really started, several of their number decided to form their own group, which became known as The Association. Written by Don and Dick Addrisi, "Never My Love" was their fourth of only five top ten singles, peaking at number two on the charts.
Also by The Association, "Cherish" was number 122 in 2005, up only slightly from number 124 in 2004, and "Windy" was number 334 in 2005, down from 258 in 2004. "Chapel of Love", by the Dixie Cups, was 137 in 2005, and 156 in 2004.
4. What song, up from number 196 in 2004, settled in at number 33 on the 2005 Countdown? "On the corner is a banker with a motorcar, The little children laugh at him behind his back. And the banker never wears a mac, In the pouring rain, very strange."

Answer: Penny Lane

From the "Magical Mystery Tour" album, "Penny Lane" was also released with "Strawberry Fields" as a double A sided single. Although the song was named after a real street that was close to where Paul McCartney grew up, none of the shops mentioned in the song were actually situated on Penny Lane, but were gathered, so to speak, from nearby streets. Apparently the city has had to resort to erecting street signs that are 20 feet high, because of the number of times they have been stolen. Also by the Beatles, "Yesterday" was number seven on the 2005 Countdown, down from number five in 2004, "Get Back" rated number 90 in 2005 and 47 in 2004, and "Hello Goodbye" scored numbers 94 and 54 respectively.
5. What song, down from number 301 on the 2004 Countdown, rang in at number 424 in 2005? "Through the mirror of my mind, Through these tears that I'm crying, Reflects a hurt I can't control. 'Cause although you're gone, I keep holding on, To the happy times, Oh, when you were mine."

Answer: Reflections

A Motown sensation, the Supremes had twelve number one pop singles to their credit. Written by Holland/Dozier/Holland, "Reflections" was their first recording after Florence Ballard had been forced out, and the group's name had been changed to Diana Ross and the Supremes. It peaked at number two.
Also by the Supremes, "Baby Love" was number 74 in 2005, slightly down from 71 in 2004, "You Can't Hurry Love" was 88 in 2005, up from 162 in 2004, and "Come See About Me" scored 234 and 110 respectively.
6. What was the number 71 song on the 2005 Countdown, down from number 46 in 2004? "All the leaves are brown and the sky is gray. I've been for a walk on a Winter's day. I'd be safe and warm if I was in LA..."

Answer: California Dreamin'

Written by John and Michelle Phillips, "California Dreamin'" was a huge first hit for The Mamas and Papas, spending 17 weeks on the charts, even though it never made it to number one.
Formerly called The Journeyman, they changed their name to The Mamas and Papas after watching an interview with a Hell's Angels' member who referred to the women in the gang as mamas.
Also by The Mamas and the Papas, "Monday Monday" was number 242 on the 2005 countdown, down from 226 in 2004. "Wishin' and Hopin'", by Dusty Springfield, scored numbers 428 and 416 respectively, while "Daydream", by Lovin' Spoonful occupied spot number 218 in 2005, up from 482 in 2004.
7. What song, not on the 2004 Countdown, snuck in at number 473 on the 2005 list? "End of the spring and here she comes back, Hi Hi Hi Hi there. Them summer days, those summer days. That's when I had most of my fun, back, High, high, high, high there. Them summer days, those summer days. I "cloud nine" when I want to. Out of school, yeah. County fair in the country sun. Also by Sly and the Family Stone, "Everyday People" was number 402 on the 2005 countdown, up from 439 in 2004. "Higher and Higher", by Jackie Wilson, was number 463 in 2005, and 368 in 2004, and "Sweet Soul Music", by Arthur Conley, scored spots numbered 412 and 274 respectively.

Answer: Devil in Disguise

There is a lot written online about Elvis Presley's early years, but it is difficult to find much information about the period in which he stopped touring, and focused on making movies. "Devil in Disguise" is another song from that era. Written by Grant, Baum and Kaye, it peaked at number three in the States, but made it to number one in the UK.
Also by Presley, "Viva Las Vegas" was number 205 in 2005, up from 261 in 2004, "Suspicious Minds" was number eight in 2005, up from last year's 25, and "Crying in the Chapel" scored numbers 392 and 463 respectively.
10. What song, number nine on the 2005 Countdown, was only number 14 in 2004? "Imagine me and you, I do. I think about you day and night. It's only right, To think about the girl you love, And hold her tight..."

Answer: Happy Together

Turtles' founding members Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman met while singing a capella in the school choir. Their first hit was with the Dylan penned tune, "It Ain't Me Babe". Written by Gary Bonnet and Alan Gordon, "Happy Together" was arguably their biggest hit ever, and spent three weeks at the number one spot.
Also by the Turtles, "She'd Rather Be with Me" was number 277 on the 2005 Countdown, down from 193 in 2004. "Turn, Turn, Turn", by the Byrds, was number 69 in 2005, up from 82 in 2004, and "Walk Hand in Hand", by Gerry and the Pacemakers, scored numbers 257 and 202 respectively.
