Answer: Torture

"Suspicion" ranked sixth on the Billboard Hot 100 the week of April 4th, 1964, trailing only The Beatles, whose songs occupied the top five spots. The following week the song reached its peak position at number three, breaking up the Fab Four's monopoly. The song was originally recorded by Elvis Presley as a album cut for his 1962 LP "Pot Luck", but was not released as a single. However, following the success of Stafford's version, it was released in the US, but it failed miserably, peaking at number 103. "Suspicion" was Stafford's only top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, but in the mid 1970s he did enjoy some moderate success on the Billboard Country charts.

Answer: Lightning Strikes

"Lightning Strikes" was the first and only number one hit for Lou Christie. Christie's first song, "Rhapsody in the Rain", was banned in many places because of its suggestive lyrics. As far as I'm concerned "Lightning Strikes" should have been banned because of its heavily chauvinistic lyrics. "I Can't Help Myself", by the Four Tops, was #77 on the countdown, "Sugar Shack", by Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs, was #129, and "Walk Like a Man" was #154 for the Four Seasons.

From Quiz Mid-1960s Lyrics - Count Me In

Answer: Paint It Black

This song, the lyrics of which allude to depression and suicide, was a two week chart topper for the Rolling Stones in 1966. During this period, the noted producer/arranger Jack Nitzsche often contributed to various Stones' projects behind the scenes. On this piece, he actually played keyboards as well. "Paint It Black" has aged well! It was the theme for the TV drama "Tour Of Duty" during the 1987-8, 1988-9 seasons and has been notably featured in several movies, among them "The Devil's Advocate" and "Full Metal Jacket". Incidentally, for those who may not know, "Goodbye Cruel World" was the actual title of a big #3 hit for James Darren in 1961. It's about a fellow who joins the circus after losing at love, not quite as heavy a sentiment as expressed in "Paint It Black"!
