Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what song did our fathers meet our mothers in the U.S.O.?

Answer: Allentown

The title reference was to Allentown, Pennsylvania. It was a blue-collar neighborhood in a time of an industrial boom. The song was not specifically about this town but, moreso, a metaphor for the industrial towns of the time.
2. Which of these is NOT a Billy Joel song?

Answer: The River

"The River" is actually a song by Garth Brooks. Not to be confused with "River of Dreams" which IS a Billy Joel song.
3. Which of these is NOT a Billy Joel album?

Answer: In Pieces

"In Pieces" is an album by Garth Brooks.
4. In what song do you hear the line: "I believe I have passed the age of consciousness and righteous rage."

Answer: Angry Young Man

The whole lyric is: "I believe I have passed the age of consciousness and righteous rage. I found that just surviving was a noble fight. I once believed in causes too. I had my pointless point of view but life went on no matter who was wrong or right." (What a great song! One of my favorites.)
5. What song mentions the name of Billy's sister?

Answer: Why Judy Why

Billy had one sister named Judy. His mother raised them both while his father was away. This song appears on Billy's first album "Cold Spring Harbor".
6. What song mentions the name of Billy's mother?

Answer: Rosalinda's Eyes

His mother's actual name was Rosalind. This song appears on the album called "52nd Street".
7. Billy Joel and Ray Charles sang a duet on the "Nylon Curtain" album.

Answer: False

They did a song called "Baby Grand" on Billy's album called "The Bridge".
8. The instrumental song "Nocturne" appears on ______.

Answer: Cold Spring Harbor

"Nocturne" is a beautiful instrumental piece that we see on Billy's first album called "Cold Spring Harbor". It came out originally in 1971 which would make him 22 years old at the time. This piece showcases his true talent for writing music. Incidently, "Cold Spring Harbor" was recorded at a higher than normal speed (some say it happened accidentally) and thus has a "unique" sound to it.

It is a great album nonetheless.
9. Which song tells of Viktor entertaining children as a clown in a circus?

Answer: Leningrad

Viktor was a friend of Billy's. They met when Billy was touring in Russia. He (Viktor) actually was part of the Russian circus. Billy was married to Christie Brinkley at the time and they took their daughter Alexa to meet Viktor while he was performing.
10. This song is one that Billy himself has dubbed, "Completely historically inaccurate". This song is __________.

Answer: The Ballad of Billy the Kid

Billy never claimed that this song was a biographical look at the historical figure "Billy the Kid". In fact, when asked, he will say that it was completely historically innacurate. He wasn't trying to tell a history lesson. He just wanted to tell a good story.
11. The music video for this song shows Billy in "Music Court".

Answer: Keepin' the Faith

If you see this video, see if you can spot a cameo by Christie Brinkley as the "red-haired girl in my Chevrolet".
12. Which song boasts the lyrics, "You might have heard I run with a dangerous crowd. We ain't too pretty, we ain't too proud."

Answer: Only the Good Die Young

Billy got in a lot of trouble for this song. This did not prevent him from singing it at his concerts.
13. Complete the lyric: "In every heart, there is a room, _______."

Answer: a sanctuary safe and strong

From the song "And So It Goes" on the "Storm Front" album
14. Billy covered a Beatles song on the "Kohuept" album.

Answer: True

A cover of "Back in the U.S.S.R" can be heard as the second to last track on the album.
15. And finally, let's finish up with an easy one. Which song consists mainly of a list of historical events?

Answer: We Didn't Start the Fire

This song actually was "born" when Billy was admittedly having a bit of a midlife crisis. He said he wanted to "take inventory" of his life. So he wrote a list of all the historical events he could think of that happened within his life time. Later, this list became the basis for "We Didn't Start the Fire".
