Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is her last name?

Answer: Guðmundsdóttir

No wonder we rarely see it used! It means "Guðmundur's Daughter". She dropped her last name after going solo in 1993/93. In Iceland, so many people have the same name that the phone books are listed not only by first name, but list their occupation as well! Most Icelanders use a patrilineal naming system where the father's name is added to a -son or -dottir, depending on if the child is a boy or a girl.
2. Bjork's first album was released in 1977. How old was she then?

Answer: 11

She was born in 1965 in Reykjavik, Iceland. (The World Almanac states she was born in Rheinberg, Iceland, but that is the only source in which I have seen a city other than Reykjavik as her birthplace) This vinyl album contained one song which she had written herself. There was also a version with 10 songs. This version is now very rare and can fetch prices from $100 to $700!
3. Which was the FIRST band Bjork recorded with?

Answer: Exodus

The Sugarcubes were formed in 1987 with Bjork, Einar ...rn, Siggi Baldurson, Th-r Eldon, Magga ...rn-lfsd-ttir and Bragi Olafsson. They broke up in 1992 after 4 albums: 'Life's Too Good', 'Here Today, Tomorrow, Next Week', 'Stick Around for Joy' and 'It's It'.

In 1998 a cd of remixes of theirs titled 'The Great Crossover Potential' was released. Exodus was among Bjork's least memorable bands.
4. Which is not one of Bjork's songs?

Answer: "Blue State of Mind"

"Blue State of Mind" is sung by Grey DeLisle. "These other tracks were extras for Vespertine which were not included on the album. Verandi is its own song, Hearts & Bones is another version of Hidden Place, and Odd Duck is another version of an Echo a Stain.
5. According to bjork.com, how did the scar on her right palm originate?

Answer: She ran into a lamp post

According to a little story on the website, she learned to run down a busy street with her eyes closed, relying on her other senses until one day she ran into a lamp post.
6. Who played Bjork in the Jeopardy sketch on the 2002 Saturday Night Live episode hosted by Winona Ryder?

Answer: Winona Ryder

She acted..erratically. I believe her dialogue was based off "It's Oh So Quiet". I was surprised to find out that bjork.com actually acknowledged this impersonation!
7. "Telegram" is a remix cd with the songs of what album?

Answer: Post

Just the same songs with new remixed, replacing "It's Oh So Quiet" with "My Spine". Most Bjsrk fans recommend buying both if you are very interested. 'Telegram' is usually cheaper than Post, but in my opinion, the quality is as well.
8. What was the working title of Vespertine?

Answer: Domestika

Also spelled Domestica or Domesticka. The rest of these are songs on the album, released in late 2001.
9. Which was her third solo album (solo as in 1990 onwards)?

Answer: Post

If you weren't considering Gling-Gl-, you probably chose Homogenic. Gling-Gl- (Icelandic for "tick-tock") was released in 1990, whereas Post was released in 1995.
10. In "Dancer in the Dark", how much money had Selma saved before it was stolen?

Answer: $2056.10

Selma, of course, was played by Bjork. She won an award for Best Actress at the Cannes Film festival and the movie won "Best Film".
11. There were ___ versions of the famous swan dress worn at the 2000 Oscars?

Answer: 2

Both were designed by Marjan Pejoski, one was black and one was white. The white dress also appears on the cover of "Vespertine".
12. Bjork's favorite animal is the _________?

Answer: polar bear

One video, "Hunter" shows herself morphing into a polar bear and then back again.
13. What song did she sing on Saturday Night Live in 1997?

Answer: Bachelorette

She was originally intended to sing two songs, but a sketch went on for too long and there was not enough time.
14. Bjork has a son (Sindri) and a daughter. What is the daughter's name?

Answer: Isadora

She was born in 2001, about 16 years after Sindri.
15. The record label commonly associated with the Sugarcubes is called ____ ?

Answer: Smekkleysa

More commonly known as Bad Taste, Smekkleysa is the record label for numerous Icelandic artists like Sigur Ros and the Sugarcubes (and now some of the ex-cube members). It's called Bad Taste because, according to smekkleysa.net, the enemy of creativity is "frugality" and "good taste".
