Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1969 the band changed its name to Black Sabbath, but what were they called before?

Answer: Earth

Before becoming Earth they had been called Mythology and the rather odd Polka Tulk.

ELO featured the drumming talents of Bev Bevan, who later joined Black Sabbath along with Ian Gillan for the 'Born Again' album.
3. What is notable about the track 'The Warning' and 'Evil Woman' on the first Black Sabbath album?

Answer: They are their only recorded cover version

The original of 'The Warning' was recorded by Aynsley Dunbar's Retalliation and the original of 'Evil Woman' was recorded by Crow.
4. All four of the original members of Black Sabbath have released solo albums.

Answer: True

Ozzy has had a huge solo career, Geezer Butler has released two albums with his own band (one under the name GZR and one as Geezer), Tony Iommi has released one album with guests like Billy Corgan and Skin, and Bill Ward has released one solo album, on which Ozzy did some guest vocals.
5. The 'Paranoid' album originally had a different title- what was it?

Answer: War Pigs

Although it was decided to change the title of the album, it was too late to change the cover artwork, so the original picture of a sword- wielding soldier jumping out from behind a tree was used.
6. Where did the name Black Sabbath come from?

Answer: An old horror movie

The 1960's movie starred Boris Karloff.
7. How did Tony Iommi lose the tips of his fingers?

Answer: In a welding accident

The accident happened in 1966 and Tony had to totally relearn the guitar. At first he made plastic tips for his fingers from old washing up liquid bottles, but now has them specially made for him.
8. From which Black Sabbath song do the following lyrics come? 'My name it means nothing, my fortune is less, my future is shrouded in dark wilderness...'

Answer: Solitude

One of the few soulful ballads that Sabbath have recorded.
9. Ozzy Osbourne was replaced in 1977 by former Brit blues band Savoy Brown singer Dave Walker.

Answer: True

Dave Walker was only with the band for a matter of a few months, just long enough for them to rehearse the songs for the 'Never Say Die' album.
10. Who played keyboards on the 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' album?

Answer: Rick Wakeman

Legend has it that Rick happened to be recording in the same studio and Sabbath didn't know how the synth worked so they asked him to play it for them. Wakeman later called in the favour by getting Ozzy to provide guest vocals on one track of his 'Return to the Centre of the Earth' album.
11. Which member of the band sang lead vocals on 'It's Alright' from the 1976 'Technical Ecstacy' album?

Answer: Bill Ward

This was the first time that another member of the band and not Ozzy had sung lead on a Sabbath song.
12. What band did Ronnie James Dio leave to join Sabbath?

Answer: Rainbow

There have been many other conections between Deep Purple, Rainbow, Ozzy, and Black Sabbath. Ian Gillan was vocalist for Purple and Sabbath, Don Airey played keyboards for Sabbath and Rainbow and Ozzy. Many other band members have also been shared between the bands.
13. Ronnie James Dio left the band after the release of a live album- what was that album called?

Answer: Live Evil

Dio didn't like the way the album was mixed, as he felt his vocals were too quiet; the problem was he was mixing it during the day and Tony Iommi was remixing it during the night.
14. Tony Iommi's real first name is George.

Answer: False

Tony's first name is actually Frank. The real names of the other original members are: John Osbourne, Terence Butler, and William Ward.

17. From which Ronnie James Dio era song do the following lyrics come: 'Gather the wind, though the wind won't help you fly at all, your back's to the wall..'

Answer: Die Young

'Die Young' was the second single off the 'Heaven and Hell' album; it managed to scrape into the UK charts at number 41 and didn't chart at all in the USA.
18. Which band member is quoted as saying: 'The only Black Magic that Sabbath got into was a box of chocolates'?
