Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Up to Me," the narrator says, "In ___ months I only smiled once..."

Answer: 14

"Up to Me" is a fine storytelling song. It was written during the time Dylan was putting together tunes for "Blood on the Tracks".
2. Also in "Up to Me," the narrator leaves a note for Estelle. Where has the note been left?

Answer: in the bottle

The Thunderbird Cafe is mentioned in the song, but not in connection with Estelle. We are told that "Dupree came in pimpin' tonight to the Thunderbird Cafe."
3. In "Carribean Wind," the narrator hears a voice call something while he is in Atlantic City "by the cold, grey sea." What does the voice call?

Answer: Daddy

This tune was from around the time Dylan compiled tunes for Shot of Love, a 1981 release. "Carribean Wind" begins with a story of a musician playing a concert in Miami. The chorus is especially strong.
4. In "Romance in Durango," the narrator is "on the run" with whom?

Answer: Magdalena

This tune is on the CD "Desire," released in 1976. Dylan co-wrote the lyrics to "Romance in Durango" with Jacques Levy.
5. In "Senor (Tales of Yankee Power), what is still "hanging down from around her neck"?

Answer: iron cross

"Senor" was originally released on the CD/album Street Legal in 1978.
6. In "Just Like a Woman," the narrator requests "If we meet again...please don't let on that you knew me when I was ____."

Answer: hungry

This Dylan classic was originally released in 1966 on the Blonde on Blonde album, a collection which regularly is included on "greatest of" album lists.
7. In "Gotta Serve Somebody," listeners are told "you might be a socialite with _______."

Answer: a long string of pearls

This song was part of the Slow Train Coming collection from 1979. It was, of course, from Dylan's "born again" era.
8. In "Heart of Mine," the narrator describes his heart as ______.

Answer: malicious

"Heart of Mine" was included on the 1981 release Shot of Love, which also has a "spiritual" theme.
9. In "I Want You," the "silver saxophones" say ________?

Answer: I should refuse you

This tune is also from the 1966 classic album Blonde on Blonde which also includes well-known Dylan creations "Rainy Day Women," "Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again," and the epic "Visions of Johanna."
10. In "Time Passes Slowly," the narrator says, "we stare straight ahead and try so hard ___________."

Answer: to stay right

The song was included on New Morning, a 1970 release. Some musicologists have analyzed "Time Passes Slowly" and concluded that it is deceptively pleasant. The melody seems warm but the words ultimately suggest a longing to get back to a faster-paced life.

They usually then suppose that Dylan felt that way while recuperating from his motorcycle accident. Perhaps, or maybe, as Dylan would say, "something is happening here but you don't know what it is."
