Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was Brian Jones's full name?

Answer: Lewis Brian Hopkin-Jones

Brian's full name is sometimes shown as Lewis Brian Hopkin-Jones or Lewis Brian Hopkin Jones. He was named Lewis after his father. Coincidentally enough, his mother was named Louisa.
2. What was Brian's Zodiac sign?

Answer: Pisces

Brian was born February 28, 1942.
3. Where was Brian born?

Answer: Cheltenham

According to wikipedia.com, Brian was born in Park Nursing Home in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, during World War II. Although his parents were from Wales and he was of Welsh ancestry, he was born in England. Like the neighboring city of Bath, Cheltenhman is known for its Baths.
4. Musician(s) admired and emulated by Brian included:

Answer: All of these

Brian was a huge fan of jazz and, later, blues. He loved American Jazz musician Charlie "Yardbird" Parker, who inspired Brian to learn to play saxophone in his teens. He was also a fan of Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, and purportedly asked the mothers of his boys to name them all "Julian" in Adderley's honor. Brian later got interested in blues and became so influenced by Elmore (Elmo) James that he occasionally called himself "Elmo Lewis" early in his musical career.
5. For all of you hardcore Stones fans: In the early days of the Stones, Brian shared an apartment (flat) with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, and one other person. What was the name of the fourth roommate?

Answer: James Phelge

James Phelge was the fourth roommate. He made a living as a photographer, but never acheived the fame of the 3 Stones. Mick and Keith wrote and published some of their early songs under the name "Nanker-Phelge", because they were self-conscious about their songwriting skills at first (they believed that "real" blues music could only be composed by American blacks). "Nanker" was a word the Stones made up to describe a silly face that they would make.

Phelge wrote a book about his days as a Stones friend and roommate called "Nankering with the Rolling Stones". It was released in some countries under the title: "Untold History From Edith Grove and Beyond".
6. Brian Jones was a talented musician and songwriter who wrote and recorded several songs with the Rolling Stones and received writing credit for those songs.

Answer: False

Although Brian was widely regarded as a talented musician and multi-instrumentalist and purportedly wrote or co-wrote some of the early Stones songs, he was never given a writing credit. At the time of his death, he was supposedly writing and composing music. Unfortunately all of the tapes have been lost.

While researching this quiz, I read that Jones actually did receive a writing credit for a Rice Krispies jingle that the Stones recorded under a pseudonym, but the question above refers specifically to the "Rolling Stones".

Wikipedia also states: "A second song, "Sure I Do", was written, recorded and sung completely by Jones in 1963, but the only known copy of it remains in Bill Wyman's "Sticky Fingers" restaurant. It remains unreleased and to date no one is known to have listened to it." Interesting! I hope Bill Wyman releases it someday.
7. Brian was friends with the Beatles, and they respected his musical ability. What Beatles song(s) featured Brian's musical performance(s)?

Answer: "Baby, You're a Rich Man" and "You Know My Name (Look Up My Number)"

Brian played saxophone on "You Know My Name (Look Up My Number)" in 1967. It was not released until 1970, as the non-LP B-side of "Let It Be". Brian also played the oboe part on "Baby, You're a Rich Man".

"I Wanna Be Your Man" was written by the Beatles and recorded by the Rolling Stones early on in their career, but Brian never performed on this song with the Beatles (at least not that I know of!).

"All You Need Is Love" features guest vocals of several well-known musicians and singers, but Brian was not one of them.
8. Brian fell in love with Morocco and its native music. In fact, Brian was so taken with the sounds of the native musicians that he recorded an album called "Brian Jones Presents the Pipes of Pan at ______________".

Answer: Joujouka

Although the music on this album was performed by The Master Musicians of Jajouka and was recorded in the Jajouka region of Morocco, it is spelled "Joujouka" on the album.
9. How many sons named "Julian" was Brian purported to have sired?

Answer: 2

Brian is purported to be the father of at least five illegitimate children, at least two of whom are known to be named "Julian" (after Julian "Cannonball" Adderley). Pat Andrews, an early girlfriend of Brian's, gave birth to Julian Mark Andrews in October 1961.

He later had another son, Julian Brian Lawrence, with girlfriend Linda Lawrence, a model. She later married singer Donovan, and Julian #2 took the last name "Leitch" from his stepfather for a while.
10. Several books have been written about Brian Jones, many of which explore the possibility that his death involved foul play. Which of the following people did NOT write a book about Brian Jones?

Answer: Albert Goldman

Albert Goldman authored not-so-flattering biographies of John Lennon and Elvis Presley, but not about Brian Jones.

The other three are authors of books on Brian Jones:

1. Anna Wohlin, a Swedish model who was Brian's last girlfriend, wrote a book claiming that she saw Brian murdered and that she was quickly rushed out of the country by Stones management. It's published variously under the titles: "The Murder of Brian Jones", "The Wild and Wycked World of Brian Jones" and "The Wild and Wicked World of Brian Jones", and was recently made into a film (see #3).

2. Mandy Aftel is the author of "Death of a Rolling Stone: The Brian Jones Story" (U.S. title) which speculates that Brian's death involved foul play. While researching this quiz, I learned that Mandy Aftel's specialty is perfume: she has written at least 3 books about perfumes and scents.

3. Terry Rawlings authored "Brian Jones: Who Killed Christopher Robin? The Truth Behind The Murder Of A Rolling Stone" (U.S. title), which was made into a movie, "Stoned" (also known as "The Wild and Wycked World of Brian Jones").
