Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When did the Stones release "Undercover"?

Answer: the 80s

"Undercover of the Night" and "She Was Hot" were included. David Sanborn was featured on sax. Album was released on Virgin in 1983.
2. "Their Satanic Majesties Request": Which decade?

Answer: 60s

The actual year was 1967, released on the ABKCO label. The album was the lads' answer to the Beatles' "Sergeant Pepper" album. The two bands competed quite a bit in those days.
3. "Bridges to Babylon." The decade?

Answer: the 90s

"Bridges" shipped in '97. Billy Preston played organ, a long time after he was featured on "Sergeant Pepper." Me'Shell Ndegeocello played bass, news to me because I only knew her as singing a duet with John Mellencamp on "Wild Night."
4. Here's one of my favorite Stones singles: "Brown Sugar." What decade saw its time on the charts?

Answer: the 70s

It was a smash on the charts and also appeared on "Sticky Fingers," released on Rolling Stones Records in 1971. Close to the 60s but not quite. The song is about interracial, uh, love.
5. When was "Forty Licks" released?

Answer: the 00s

This incredible compilation came out in 2002. It includes just about every great hit the lads ever had, and, my, have they had some!
6. "Made in the Shade" was made public in ...

Answer: the 70s

The cover art had a female sunbather against a background of the pyramids of Egypt. It was on Columbia in 1975. "Wild Horses," "Angie," and "It's Only Rock and Roll" were included.
7. This one may be hard to remember: "December's Children (and Everybody's)." In what decade could you first get this at the record shop?

Answer: the 60s

The year was 1965, and the label was ABKCO. "Get off of My Cloud" and "As Tears Go By" were memorable tracks. The cover photo looks as if the Stones were doing a film of "The Pit and the Pendulum," almost getting squashed between the walls at the end.
8. "Tattoo You" is one of the band's best known titles. What decade was it?

Answer: the 80s

On Virgin in 1981. It's not hard to picture Mick dancin' 'n' prancin' around the stage on "Start Me Up," the album's top track. The one and only Sonny Rollins appeared on tenor sax.
9. The single "Honky Tonk Women," one of the Stones' biggest hits, was released in which decade?

Answer: the 60s

In July of 1969, Brian Jones accidentally drowned in his swimming pool. At a free concert in Hyde Park, which turned into a memorial service for Brian, the Stones first performed "Honky Tonk Women." Mick Taylor replaced Brian, and "Women" hit number one in the U.S. in August.
10. In what decade did "Sucking in the Seventies" come out?

Answer: the 80s

This question looked like a gift but it was a curve ball instead. "Shattered" and "Everything Is Turning to Gold" were the first two tracks. I couldn't find a satisfactory explanation of the origin of the slang use of "sucks" as in "that sucks," but I think it probably came from the phrase "That sucks wind," which used to mean "That's the worst" or the like.

As far as I can tell, it's not obscene, although I can't be sure how the Stones meant it.
