Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The original version of the band was formed in 1967. How many members were in the original group?

Answer: 7

The group that laid down the first tracks consisted of Walt Parazaider (saxophone,), Lee Loughnane (trumpet), James Pankow (trombone), Danny Seraphine (drums), Peter Cetera (bass), Terry Kath (guitar), and Robert Lamm (keyboard). All members with the exception of Seraphine contributed to the vocals.
2. How many original members celebrated their 40th anniversary with the group in 2007?

Answer: 4

Still making great music with this band after 40+ years are Walt Parazaider, Lee Loughnane, James Pankow, and Robert Lamm.
3. Who plays saxophone on all their songs, as well as flute and horns on some of their hits as well?

Answer: Walt Parazaider

Parazaider, actually was instrumental in putting the group together in 1967, and is still one of its driving forces today. He can play just about any wind instrument, but is largely known for his saxophone and flute. The flute solo on the very popular "Color My World" is his.
4. This musician, and another founding member of the group, plays the trombone and has a brother who has also done very well in the entertainment field. Trombonist James Pankow's well known brother is...

Answer: John Pankow

Brother John has worked in TV for over 20 years, and is best remembered for the role of "Ira" in the hit TV series "Mad About You". He also has done theater, and performed on Broadway in the revival of "Twelve Angry Men". Talent runs in the family!
5. The bass guitarist, and one of the lead vocalists for the current group is Jason Scheff. He also has a well known family member who was in show business. His father Jerry Scheff was a musician who toured with one of the following. Which one?

Answer: Elvis Presley

Like father, like son. Jason has been with Chicago since 1985. His dad was a session musician who can be heard on tracks dating back to the mid 1960's, and worked with artists such as The Association, Johnny Rivers, Neil Diamond, as well as working with The Doors and Jim Morrison on what turned out to be their final album "L.A. Woman".

As for his work with Presley, he became a member of Presley's touring "TCB Band", and played a prominent role in Presley's "Aloha From Hawaii" TV special in 1973.

He continued to tour until Presley's unfortunate death in 1977.
6. Peter Cetera, another of the original members, left the group in 1985 to pursue a solo career. He recorded the theme song from the film "The Karate Kid Part II" called "Glory of Love", and also recorded a number of duets with top female artists. Which one of these artists did he NOT record with?

Answer: Tina Turner

"The Next Time I Fall" was recorded with Grant in 1986, and went to number one on the U. S. charts. "After All" was recorded with Cher in 1989, and went to number 6 on the charts in the U. S. The song was also used prominently in the romantic comedy "Chances Are" with Robert Downey Jr., and Cybil Shepard. Cetera and Chaka Khan teamed up in 1993 for "Feels Like Heaven". Cetera has also done duets with Agnetha Faltskog of Abba, and singer/actress Crystal Bernard, however, he's never hooked up with the immortal Miss Turner.
7. Current drummer Tris Imboden joined the group in 1990 after a successful stint with this equally successful musician. Name him.

Answer: Kenny Loggins

Tris was a highly sought after session drummer working for the likes of Neil Diamond, Firefall, Richard Marx, Roger Daltrey, and Crosby Stills and Nash. He toured with Loggins for a number of years before joining Chicago. He also was a founding member of a band called "Honk" in the 70's, who toured with The Beach Boys and Jackson Browne in the mid 1970's.
8. One of the founding members of the group ironically was born in Brooklyn New York in 1944. Which guy?

Answer: Robert Lamm

Lamm was born in Brooklyn and his family moved to Chicago when he was a child. He studied music at Roosevelt University in Chicago. Lamm is responsible for some of Chicago's biggest songs, writing such hits as "Saturday In The Park", "25 Or 6 To 4", "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is", and "Beginnings", among others.
9. Bill Champlin came on board in 1981, so he is a silver member of the group. What was his claim to fame before joining Chicago?

Answer: Led the band called Sons Of Champlin

"The Sons Of Champlin" were originally his high school group called "The Opposite Six". They recorded a number of well reviewed albums in the late 70's. Unfortunately good reviews don't always result in big sales, and the albums failed commercially. As for Earth Wind and Fire, Champlin co-wrote their smash hit, the Grammy winning song "After The Love Is Gone", and ironically did tour with them in 2005 when both bands went on an extended summer tour together. Champlin was originally asked to join Chicago in 1978, shortly after the death of Terry Kath, and initially refused, but eventually was convinced to join in 1981. Good choice!
10. Drummer and original member Danny Seraphine parted ways with the group in 1990 because of an internal dispute, and laid low until 2006. What is he doing now?

Answer: Formed a new group called CTA (California Transit Authority)

After being asked by the other members to leave Chicago in 1990 in a dispute over work ethics, Seraphine initally settled in Colorado, and after several years of producing local artists, he moved back to L. A. In early 2006, Seraphine and a friend, Marc Bonilla, put California Transit Authority together to do a few charity shows.

The response was so overwhelmingly positive that they put together a 70 minute set, and started performing locally, with a mix of some of Chicago's tunes, as well as some original material and covers.

The released their first studio album in early 2007, and went on a U. S. tour.
