Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Under what name did the band Chicago record their first album?

Answer: Chicago Transit Authority

Chicago mayor Richard Daley and the real Chicago Transit Authority objected to the band's name, so they shortened it to just Chicago.
2. Almost every member of Chicago has written songs for the band, but one man has written more than half of the songs they've recorded. Which band member has always been their most prolific songwriter?

Answer: Robert Lamm

Everyone is equal in Chicago, but pianist Robert Lamm has always been just a little more equal than everyone else!
3. From 1970 until 1978, all Chicago album titles consisted of the name "Chicago" and a Roman numeral. What was the first Chicago studio album with a title that didn't include the band's name?

Answer: Hot Streets

Unlike previous album covers, which featured the "Chicago" logo and a Roman number, the cover of "Hot Streets" featured a photograph of the band. Surveys later showed that fans didn't care to see the band on album covers, and missed seeing the old, familiar logo! The band went back to their older way of naming albums.
4. How did Chicago's original guitarist/vocalist Terry Kath die?

Answer: an accidental shooting

Kath was playing with a gun he apparently didn't think was loaded, and shot himself through the head.

Kath's deep, gruff vocals on songs like "Make Me Smile" had helped define the band's sound.
5. Which instrument does founding member Jimmy Pankow play?

Answer: trombone

Trombonist Pankow wrote Chicago's smash hit "Old Days," a song inspired by fifties nostalgia.
6. What group provided harmonies on the hit "Wishing You Were Here," and later went on tour with Chicago in 1974 and 1989?

Answer: The Beach Boys

Peter Cetera often says it was his childhood dream to be either a Beatle or a Beach Boy, so the chance to collaborate with his heroes on "Wishing You Were Here" was thrilling for Cetera.
7. Columbia Records dropped Chicago due to the disappointing sales of "Chicago 15." Who joined the band as guitarist and vocalist for the "Chicago 16" album on the Warner Brothers label?

Answer: Bill Champlin

"Chicago 16" marked a step back toward success for the band, but "Chicago 17" proved to be one of their most popular albums ever.
David Foster produced the album, and co-wrote several songs on it, including the #1 hit "Hard to Say I'm Sorry."
8. "Look Away" proved to be Chicago's biggest hit single ever. Who wrote this song?

Answer: Diane Warren

Diane Warren has written smash hits for everyone from Aerosmith and Joe Cocker to LeAnn Rimes and Cher.
9. Which of these Chicago favorites is a song about the process of writing a song?

Answer: 25 or 6 to 4

"25 or 6 to 4" reflects the struggle of a songwriter who's staying up all night, trying to complete a song he's been working on. He splashes water on his face, trying to stay awake long enough to come up with a decent set of lyrics. After hours of struggling, he looks at the clock and realizes it's almost 3:35 AM (which is 25 or 26 minutes til 4!).
10. As of the year 2004, how many of Chicago's original 8 members were still with the band?

Answer: 4

Pianist/vocalist Robert Lamm and the entire original horn section (Jimmy Pankow, Walt Parazaider and Lee Loughnane) were still members of Chicago in September of 2004.
