Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1969 founding member of The Rolling Stones, Brian Jones, tragically died aged 27. Which guitarist replaced him?

Answer: Mick Taylor

Mick Taylor was the hastily-found replacement for Brian Jones; he had previously been a member of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and was playing guitar the first time I caught the Stones in 1973. He was replaced by Ronnie Wood in 1975.
2. In 1985 Sammy Hagar replaced which charismatic front man in Van Halen?

Answer: David Lee Roth

Sammy Hagar, "The Red Rocker", replaced David Lee Roth in Van Halen; he had been famous for his work with Montrose and his solo efforts. David Lee Roth went on to a very successful solo career. Did you know he's also a fully qualified Emergency Medical Technician in New York City?
3. Tetsu Yamauchi had played bass with Kossoff, Kirke, Tetsu And Rabbit as well as Free before he landed the job to replace Faces bass player in 1973. Who did he replace?

Answer: Ronnie Lane

Ronnie Lane had been a member of The Small Faces and Faces but quit the band in 1973, unhappy at Rod Stewart's seeming lack of commitment. Ronnie went on to enjoy success with The Passing Show which produced classic songs like "The Poacher" and "How Come". He died in 1997. Meanwhile Tetsu stayed with the band until their demise in 1975 when he returned to his native Japan.
4. Freddie Mercury was a huge talent and a huge loss to Queen and music in general when he died in 1991. Do you remember the name of his immediate replacement?

Answer: Nobody immediately.

After the death of Freddie Mercury Queen did appear to be lost, that was for five years until Paul Rodgers of Free and Bad Company took over vocals. The band was never known as Queen again; this incarnation was Queen And Paul Rodgers which lasted until 2009.

In 2011 they recruited Adam Lambert and became Queen And Adam Lambert. Adam had gained fame after being a runner up on "American Idol".
5. Phil Collins had sat at the back of the stage beating the drum for Genesis until the original singer left and devastated the fans in 1976. Somebody had to take over at the microphone, so Phil stepped up. Who was the original voice of Genesis?

Answer: Peter Gabriel

Peter Gabriel had been a founding member of Genesis and a focal point for the band's live shows. He was famous for his numerous outlandish costumes as much as for his vocals. Having failed to find what they considered to be a suitable replacement vocalist the other band members "bullied" Phil Collins into the job. Both Gabriel and Collins went on to have major success in a solo vein.
6. Tragedy struck in 1977 when an aeroplane crash took the lives of three members of Lynyrd Skynyrd. The band went into limbo for ten years and reappeared with vocalist Johnny Van Zant. But who was the singer that died on the plane?

Answer: Ronnie Van Zant

The original singer with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ronnie Van Zant, was replaced by his younger brother Johnny. The band never managed to achieve the success of the original group, but trying to top songs such as "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Freebird" must be incredibly hard if not impossible.
7. After a night out in London in 1980 Bon Scott died leaving AC/DC without a singer; which "Geordie" did they ask to replace him?

Answer: Brian Johnson

The choice was Gateshead UK's Brian Johnson from the band Geordie.
A "Geordie" is a person from Newcastle Upon Tyne; these other three are true "Geordies".
Jimmy Nail is an actor from Newcastle Upon Tyne who has had a number of hit songs.
Spike, front man of The Quireboys, is originally from Newcastle Upon Tyne.
Hank Marvin of Newcastle Upon Tyne's guitar playing helped him rise to fame with The Shadows.
8. Deep Purple (MkII) seemed to start to fall apart in 1973 when singer Ian Gillan and bass player Roger Glover left the band. Who replaced them?

Answer: Glenn Hughes and David Coverdale

After recruiting Trapeze's Glenn Hughes who was an able bass player as well as vocalist the band debated continuing as a four piece. He was however joined in the band by the new co-lead vocalist David Coverdale. Hughes left the band in 1976 at about the same time as David Coverdale, who went on to form Whitesnake.
9. In 1979 the founder of Black Sabbath, Tony Iommi felt he had to fire the singer Ozzy Osbourne. A replacement was found, but who?

Answer: Ronnie James Dio

It was Sharon Arden, the soon-to-be Mrs. Osbourne who suggested the ex singer from Rainbow, Ronnie James Dio, as a suitable replacement for Ozzy. Ozzy was eventually forgiven and took up vocals for Black Sabbath on a number of occasions and full time from 2011 until the farewell world tour "The End".
10. Finishing with the act we started with, who replaced Bill Wyman as Rolling Stones bass player after he left in 1993?

Answer: Nobody became the fifth band member.

If you study the later Rolling Stones' album covers you will notice only four faces present, as they never replaced Bill with a full time Rolling Stone. Bassist Darryl Jones has however been an ever-present fixture in the studio and onstage. Perhaps Bill's boots were too big to fill.
