Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This Beatles character "died in the church and was buried along with her name." Can you name the old spinster and title character of the song?

Answer: Eleanor Rigby

This song appeared on the album "Revolver", considered by many lists to be the best album ever recorded.
2. What character invented by Donovan is "just mad about Saffron"?

Answer: Mellow Yellow

One of Donovan's more "out-there" songs begins:

"I'm just mad about Saffron
Saffron's mad about me
I'm just mad about Saffron
She's just mad about me
They call me Mellow Yellow
(Quite rightly)".
3. What character sung about by Simon and Garfunkel and featured in the movie "The Graduate" was told that "Jesus loves you more than you will know"?

Answer: Mrs. Robinson

In the movie "The Graduate", Mrs. Robinson seduces a young Dustin Hoffman, who relents despite his more intense interest in Mrs. Robinson's daughter.
4. This female character invented by the Allman Brothers Band haunts the dreams of a gypsy who can never be with her. What is this "sweet" girl's name?

Answer: Melissa

A slow, sad song about a man in pain over his love for a woman he can never have:

"Crossroads, seem to come and go, yeah.
The gypsy flies from coast to coast
Knowing many, loving none,
Bearing sorrow havin fun,
But back home he'll always run
To sweet Melissa"
5. This literary character of antiquity is the subject of a song by Cream which features the lyrics "How his naked ears were tortured by the sirens sweetly singing, for the sparkling waves are calling you to kiss their white laced lips." Who is he?

Answer: Ulysses

A fantastic explosion of psychedelic sound and imagery from the band which thought enough of itself to call itself "The Cream".

"And you see a girl's brown body dancing through the turquoise,
And her footprints make you follow where the sky loves the sea.
And when your fingers find her, she drowns you in her body,
Carving deep blue ripples in the tissues of your mind."
6. What arachnid character immortilized by The Who came "to a sticky end"?

Answer: Boris the Spider

Silly, yes. But you just have to love it! John Entwistle's strange sense of humor strikes another blow:

"He's come to a sticky end
Don't think he will ever mend
Never more will he crawl 'round
He's embedded in the ground"
7. What Rolling Stones character says "Pleased to meet you; hope you guess my name"?

Answer: The Devil

This is from the song "Sympathy for the Devil", one of my favorites.
8. According to Don McLean's classic "American Pie", who stole the king's "thorny crown"?

Answer: The Jester

According to most interpretations, the "jester" in this song represents Bob Dylan with particular focus on Dylan going electric in 1965.
9. What character, brought to life by the Grateful Dead, found himself in prison after a case of them old "jelly-roll blues"?

Answer: Dupree

The song is called "Dupree's Diamond Blues", but it's the "Jelly-Roll Blues" that are mentioned throughout this song that appears on the album "Aoxomoxoa". In order to please his woman, Dupree robs a jewelry store and murders the man behind the counter.
10. In the song "Cocaine Blues" immortalized by Johnny Cash, what is the name of the man who shot his woman down with a .44?

Answer: Willy Lee

The motive was jealousy (and the influence of drugs): "Said yes oh yes my name is Willy Lee. If you've got the warrant just a-read it to me. Shot her down because she made me sore. I thought I was her daddy but she had five more."
