Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Colder than the Grave" is a line in a classic '60s song "Bring 'em Down". This song was sung by a group which was instrumental in bringing British Folk Rock into the mainstream in the 1960s. Simon Nichol is the frontman. Can you name the group?

Answer: Fairport Convention

Fairport Convention has had many line-up changes but Nicol was the founding member and led the band well into the 21st century. The folk-rock sound and the male/female lead singers (Nicol and Sandy Denny [Denny died tragically in 1978 of a cerebral haemorrhage after falling down stairs]) drew unfair comparisons that they were a British Jefferson Airplane Act.

Their name came from the house, named Fairport, where the band members met.
2. Sarah Brightman and Vince Gill both sang the same "Colder" song individually. What was the name of this song?

Answer: Colder Than Winter

Vincent "Vince" Gill is an American country singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He has achieved mainstream success and fame both as frontman to the country rock band Pure Prairie League in the 1970s, and as a solo artist starting in 1983. He wrote "Colder than Winter" in 1992.

His version has a distinctive country sound whereas Sarah Brightman's interpretation focuses on the purity of her voice with a muted orchestral backing.
3. "Colder Than My Heart (If You Can Imagine)" is from a 2007 album "For Those Who Have Heart" by a Florida rock band with a sentence fragment for a name. What is this group called?

Answer: A Day to Remember

A Day to Remember has released four studio albums, a score of singles and several music videos up to the end of December 2012. They are mainly known for their unusual fusion of metalcore and pop punk, a musical style that has bought them both brickbats and bouquets.
4. "Colder Than You" is an alt-country hit from an album called "Lik My Trakter" by a Canadian band with the same name as an Australian psychobilly band, a British punk band and a very popular American TV series in the '70s. What is the name of the band?

Answer: The Waltons

Originally known as 'Neurotic Paperboy', before changing to The Waltons, they were a Canadian alternative band formed in 1989. Their debut album, "Lik My Trakter" was released in 1991. The album became their commercial breakthrough, spawning the Top 40 hits "Colder Than You", "In the Meantime" and "The Naked Rain".

In 1994, the band won a Juno Award for Best New Group. The group broke up in 2001.
5. "Colder Than The Moon" is a line in a song "Cat People (Putting Out The Fire)", a minor hit (Though it went to number one in Sweden, Norway and New Zealand) from a 1983 album called "Let's Dance". Who sang this song?

Answer: David Bowie

David Bowie (real name David Jones - hence the confusion with Davey Jones from The Monkees) needs no introduction. While this is one of his lesser-known hits, it is a powerful and evocative song and deserves to be on any Bowie Greatest Hits album. Incidentally, Giorgio Moroder, who had a healthy string of hits as well as a successful career as a music producer, co-wrote the song.
6. "Love is Colder Than Death" needs no metaphor to get message across for The Virgins, an alternative rock band. Given that they have opened for Iggy Pop and The Stooges, Lou Reed, Sonic Youth, Patti Smith, where do you think this band is based?

Answer: New York City

Iggy Pop and The Stooges, Lou Reed, Sonic Youth, Patti Smith, and the Romes are arguably comprise the quintessential New York Sound. Listening to the Virgins' music, it is easy to determine that they have been influenced by the bands they have supported. Their song "Rich Girls" was number sixty-eight on "Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Best Songs of 2008".
7. "Cold as Snow" (1995) is not your typical catchy pop single from A-Ha, a Norwegian pop band most popular in the '80s and '90s. This song was an eight minute missive from the 1995 album "Memorial Beach". What is the number one smash that A-Ha are most famous for?

Answer: Take on Me

"Take On Me" (1985) was a number one hit for A-Ha all around the world (though in France a number three single and in the UK, number two on the Singles Chart). It was taken from their first album "Hunting High and Low" (1985). Sadly this was the height of their fame though they did sing the seventeenth Bond film title track ("The Living Daylights" in 1989).
8. Taylor Swift released her eponymous album in 2006 when she was 16 years old. The best known tracks on this album are the singles "Tim McGraw" and "Teardrops on My Guitar". Which lesser-known but beautiful "cold" song is also featured on this album?

Answer: Cold as You

Taylor Swift identifies herself as a country artist yet her music traverses the pop, pop rock, country and country-pop genres. One of the most talented observers of teenage behavior, there is no mystery why her music is so popular. Swift has been described as "America's sweetheart" and "a role model".
9. "Cold as Ice" (1977) was a huge hit for this mainstream rock act. It was the second single off their first album. What was the name of this album?

Answer: Foreigner

Foreigner has been led by English musician Mick Jones who, in 1976, met Ian McDonald and formed Foreigner with Lou Gramm, Dennis Elliott, Al Greenwood, and Ed Gagliardi as a sextet. Jones thought of their name as no matter what country they were in, three would be foreigners, because he, McDonald, and Elliott were English, while Gramm, Greenwood, and Gagliardi were Americans.
10. ...and to bow out: A mondegreen. What was the correct lyric to Elton John's "Sacrifice" (1989). The misheard lyric is "Purple hearts, Are done by you"?

Answer: Cold, cold heart, hard done by you

"Sacrifice" is about the breakup of a marriage. This song is "loved" by both Elton John and Bernie Taupin (who wrote the lyrics) and deemed a bookend of sorts to their first hit "Your Song" (1969).
Of all the options listed, including the mondegreen, only the correct lyric fits.
