Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The world was saddened in April 2016 by the unexpected death of the singer, musician and actor, Prince. He and his band The Revolution had a big hit with the colourful song "Raspberry Beret", but which song title is associated in an even more major way with Prince?

Answer: Purple Rain

Of course, it was "Purple Rain" that first made Prince and The Revolution famous. "Purple Rain" is also the title of the album from which the song is taken, as well as the 1984 movie of the same name, starring Prince.
2. Perhaps the premier R&B and Soul live act in New Orleans is The Neville Brothers. But these four brothers (Art, Aaron, Charles and Cyril) have also released many CDs. What was the name of their first album?

Answer: Yellow Moon

"Yellow Moon" was produced by the internationally known wizard Daniel Lanois. The album is an eclectic mix of covers of religious numbers, Bob Dylan songs, Sam Cooke's anthemic "A Change is Gonna Come", and brilliant original compositions, and even "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?"
3. In 1954 at the beginning of his musical career, Elvis Presley recorded a song that had originally been written for Bill Monroe and The Blue Grass Boys. What was the name of that song?

Answer: Blue Moon of Kentucky

"Blue Moon of Kentucky" was written in 1947 as a waltz; it was written by Bill Monroe. It is the official bluegrass song of Kentucky. Elvis' version changed it from a waltz to a rocking 4/4-tempo number.
4. Although it was written for the group Fleetwood Mac, the song "Black Magic Woman" became a much bigger hit for another group. What was the name of that group?

Answer: Santana

Written in a minor key and featuring the guitar wizardry of Carlos Santana, "Black Magic Woman" was released in 1970 and appeared on the album "Abraxas". It rose to Number Four on the US and Canadian charts, but this ranking does not really reflect the revered status held by the song in the rock pantheon.
5. This guitarist is now remembered for his innovative use of the guitar, as well as his brilliant and unique compositions. However, he wrote at least one classic, "Red House", which uses a stripped-down 12-bar blues structure. Which guitarist is here being discussed?

Answer: Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix (1942-1970) wrote any number of amazing compositions in his tragically brief lifetime. One of the most emotive, though, is "Red House", especially as it clearly pays tribute to the debt he owed to earlier blues musicians. The lyrics reflect the casual status that was afforded to love in the lives of such itinerant entertainers. Having fretted throughout the song about his lost girlfriend, the singer philosophically shrugs at the end as he says "If my baby won't love me no more, I know her sister will." Ladies, you are warned.
6. There was a song released in 1970 by a psychedelic band that went to Number Three on the Billboard charts. The song was called "Green-Eyed Lady". What was the name of the group? (Hint: Think of a famous mountain.)

Answer: Sugarloaf

"Green-Eyed Lady" went on to feature in many compilation albums, but as regards Sugarloaf, they seem to be what is known in the music world as "a one-hit wonder." The song itself was written by Jerry Corbetta and Dave Riordan.
7. A young woman vocalist had a hit in 1977 with the song "Blue Bayou"; in fact, it became her signature song. Which singer was this?

Answer: Linda Ronstadt

"Blue Bayou" was written by Roy Orbison and Joe Melson, and was recorded by Roy Orbison in 1963. It appeared on the compilation album "In Dreams" as well as the posthumously released album "A Black and White Night Live" which featured The Big O along with many of his famous friends from the music world.

Linda Ronstadt's version has become equally beloved. In an interesting twist, we learn from the book "Dickson's Baseball Dictionary" that a "Linda Ronstadt" is a synonym for a fastball, as in "blew by you." Groan!
8. In 1969, an English band had a very famous single called "White Room". Which group was this (Hint: it was a band that featured Eric Clapton on lead guitar and vocals.)

Answer: Cream

This hit by Cream has been ranked Number 376 on Rolling Stone's Top 500 Songs of All Time (2004, updated 2010). The song was released on the album "Wheels of Fire."
9. One of the most influential songs of what is known as the progressive rock genre, or art rock genre, was released in 1969 on Island Records. Its title was "In the Court of the Crimson King". Which group released the album containing this song?

Answer: King Crimson

Progressive rock combined other elements of music besides rock, including (though not always) jazz, classical and symphonic forms. "In the Court of the Crimson King" was the album title, as well as the name of one of its hit singles.

It has been re-released several times over the decades since its debut, notably in 2009 when the original mastertapes were discovered. The other major hit song from the influential LP was "Twenty-First Century Schizoid Man".
10. "Brown-Eyed Handsome Man" was one of Buddy Holly's hit singles. Which other seminal rock'n'roller wrote this colourful song?

Answer: Chuck Berry

Sad to say, Buddy Holly's version of "Brown-Eyed Handsome Man" had to be released posthumously. Chuck Berry recorded the song back in 1956. The song has been covered by many singers, notably Paul McCartney and Waylon Jennings.
"Brown-Eyed Handsome Man" is the title of a biography of Chuck Berry.
