Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which hymn's last verse begins: "The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, the sun forbear to shine"?

Answer: Amazing Grace

This hymn must be one of the best known and best loved of all protestant hymns. It was written by former slave trader, John Newton (1726-1807), and appeared in a book of hymns entitled "Olney Hymns" which Newton published in 1779. Newton was a prolific hymn writer. "How sweet the name of Jesus sounds" and "Glorious things of thee are spoken" are other examples of his wonderful words still being sung today.
Chris Tomlin added a chorus to "Amazing Grace" in 2006: "My chains are gone, I've been set free...". Chris says in the notes to his album "See the morning" that he was inspired to write this chorus after doing some research into Newton's life. He also says that the last verse quoted in the question above was actually Newton's last verse. "When we've been there ten thousand years bright shining as the sun..." (with which many of us are more familiar) was added years later by another writer.

Information from John Pollock's "Amazing Grace: the life of John Newton" and Chris Tomlin's album "See the morning".
2. Can you complete the following? "Looks like tonight the sky is heavy, feels like the winds are gonna change. Beneath my feet the earth is ready..."

Answer: I know it's time for heaven's rain

"Rain Down" was written by Martin Smith and Stuart Garrard of "Delirious?" and appears on their album, "World Service". The words bring a great sense of crying out to God for him to send his living water into our lives, our churches and our communities.

"Rain Down" was a huge hit internationally for Delirious?. In 2003 it was released as a free mp3 download on mp3.com and reached number 28 in the worldwide chart. It was also released as a single in Germany and reached number 2 in the SWR3 singles chart.

3. The song "The time has come" states that "the time has come" for what?

Answer: to stand for all we believe in

This song is a call for Christians to make a declaration that we are going to be completely sold out for God. The words of the chorus are "Today, today it's all or nothing. All the way the praise goes out to you...". The song was written by Michael Guy Chilsett and is recorded on Hillsong United's album "United We Stand".
4. Which song begins with the words: "He became sin, who knew no sin that we might become his righteousness."?

Answer: Jesus Messiah

"Jesus Messiah" was written by Chris Tomlin in collaboration with Daniel Carson, Ed Cash and Jesse Reeves. According to Chris he was looking to write a song using the name Messiah when Daniel (his guitar player) came up with a melody for a chorus. The two seemed to fit together perfectly. This song appears on Chris's album "Hello Love".

5. Can you complete the following? "The greatest day in history..."

Answer: death is beaten, you have rescued me

This wonderful song ("Happy Day") has been a firm favourite in our church for a few years. I love the words of the chorus that say "I'll never be the same, forever I am changed".

"Happy day" was written by Tim Hughes and Ben Cantelon and appears on Tim's album entitled "Holding Nothing Back".
6. Which hymn contains a verse beginning "And when I think that God his Son not sparing sent him to die..."?

Answer: How great thou art

"How great thou art" is such a powerful and rousing hymn, especially if you're someone who enjoys singing! It started life as a Swedish hymn and was translated into Russian. In 1953 Stuart K. Hine translated the words from Russian into English. He asked a young lady he knew if she would try it out for him. It was she who first sang this hymn in public. That young lady was the mother of a friend of mine. When her mother passed away in 2007 my friend chose "How great thou art" as one of the hymns to be sung at the funeral.

This great hymn is now well known throughout the world and has been translated into other languages too. I've had opportunity to sing it in French and Spanish as well as in the "original" Russian.
7. Which well known worship song includes the words: "Age to age he stands and time is in his hands..."?

Answer: How great is our God

From my observation "How great is our God" is fast becoming a modern classic - people seem to be singing it wherever I go! It was written by Chris Tomlin, Jesse Reeves and Ed Cash and is another of those songs that simply praises and celebrates God for who he is in all his awesomeness. You can find the song recorded on Chris's album "Arriving".

8. What is the missing word completing the chorus of a song of the same name? "Our God..., our God... There is hope in your name. Mourning turns to songs of praise. Our God..., our God..."

Answer: saves

This is the chorus of the song entitled "Our God Saves" written by Paul Baloche and Brenton Brown. It is a song of praise to God and declaration of who he is and what he's done. It's based on Psalm 68:20 which states that "Our God is a God who saves".
9. What is the title of the song whose chorus begins "My Saviour, he can move the mountains..."?

Answer: Mighty to Save

I guess that the biblical basis for the song is Zephaniah 3:17 which says that God "is mighty to save". This song was written by Reuben Morgan and Ben Fielding from Hillsong, Australia. "Mighty to Save" won the 2009 Dove Award for Worship Song.
10. Which phrase continues the chorus of this popular song? "For greater things have yet to come, and greater things are still to be done..."

Answer: in this city

This song is "God of this City". It was written by Northern Irish band, Bluetree, who wrote it while they were playing in a bar/brothel in Thailand. Chris Tomlin heard it while he and Bluetree were playing a concert in Belfast, and he included it on his album "Hello Love".
