James Darren discovered and became a teen idol in the late 1950s with his appearance in the origiNal motion picture called "Gidget". He also laid claim to fame as a pop singer with his "Goodbye Cruel World" which became a major Billboard Hot 100 hit, peaking at number three during 1961.

He followed with a couple of more Top 40 placings but turned to acting full time with a co-starring role in "The Guns Of Navarone" during 1961, and then a full time role in the television series "Time Tunnel" in the late 1960s and in the 1970s he was a regular on the series "T.J.Hooker".

McCartney made a statement when he was interview about the record by a reporter from Disc Magazine that the song was "about everything and nothing; if you have black then you have to have white, that's what makes everything so simple" he said.
