Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Spice Girls hit the world stage in a big way in 1994, going on to set all sorts of best-selling records. There were five girls in the group, with two of them sharing the same Christian name. What name?

Answer: Melanie

Melanie Brown was 'Scary Spice' and Melanie Chisholm was 'Sporty Spice'. Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice), Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice) and Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), completed the quintet. Their first NINE releases all hit the Number One or Number two spot in the UK charts, and many other charts worldwide.
2. This band had hits in the 1970s with songs like 'Make It With You', 'If', 'Baby I'm-a Want You' and 'Lost Without Your Love'. The picture would make the name of the band too easy, so I will ask for the lead singer's name instead.

Answer: David Gates

The band allegedly got their name from a sign on the side of a bread-van. Bread had five albums in the early 1970s that were all certified as gold, however internal disputes and an exhausting travel regime saw the band split up in 1973. Various members of the band reunited a couple of times, including one reincarnation that was named Toast!

David Cassidy was the heartthrob from The Partridge Family, David Soul was Hutch in the cop series 'Starsky and Hutch', who also had a few soft-rock singles in 1975-77, and David Bowie was an extraordinary singer from England, who passed away in 2016.
3. In 1966, Herbert Fame and Francine Barker teamed up as a duet. Their first hit was 'Let's Fall in Love'. What did they call themselves?

Answer: Peaches and Herb

Herb and Francine (nicknamed 'Peaches') had moderate success with 'Close Your Eyes', 'For Your Love' and 'Let's Fall in Love', and several others, released in 1967 and '68. 'Shake Your Groove Thing' and 'Reunited' were big hits in 1978, but featured a different 'Peaches', Linda Greene. All up, there have been seven women who have performed with Herb.
4. This 'tasty' British band had hits on the charts for 15 years straight, including 'You Sexy Thing', 'Every One's a Winner' and 'So You Win Again'. Hopefully my picture will give you a hint!

Answer: Hot Chocolate

They hit the big time in the disco era with 'You Sexy Thing', in 1975. My favourite Hot Chocolate song was released a couple of years prior- the haunting 'Emma'. Frontman and founder, Errol Brown, died of cancer in 2015.

Hot Butter had a hit with 'Popcorn', Vanilla Fudge are probably best known for 'You Keep Me Hangin' On', and Cream formed in 1968, featuring Eric Clapton.
5. This band was one of Australia's favourites in the 1970s and '80s, with hits like 'Summer Love' and 'Howzat'. They tried to break into the American market, performing as 'Highway', but with little success. What was their name?

Answer: Sherbet

Fronted by Daryl Braithwaite, Sherbet were teenage pinups. They were much more clean-cut than their major competition, the rough and raucous Skyhooks. They won the Hoadley's Battle of the Sounds in 1972, a national competition, and their career was on its way. Their renown even saw them featured on a postage stamp, issued in 1998.

Buck's Fizz and Sweet were both British bands, and The Sugarhill Gang were an early American hip-hop band. Sherbet modelled their name on Sweet, reflecting their appeal to the younger market.
6. Salt-N-Pepa had a huge hit with 'Let's Talk About Sex' in 1991. What was unusual about the band?

Answer: They were an all-female rap group

They were also a bit odd in that their name implied that they were a duo, but there were three women in the group- Cheryl "Salt" James, Sandra "Pepa" Denton and Deidra "Spinderella" Roper.
7. This Canadian band formed in 1977, and like so many bands of that era, had quite a turnover of band members. My picture should give you the name of the band, but who was the original lead singer?

Answer: Martha

Martha Johnson also played the keyboard for Martha and the Muffins, but the band soon had a surfeit of Marthas when Martha Ladly joined in 1978. They had one major hit, 'Echo Beach' which was Top Ten in 1979.

Following the usual 'creative differences' squabbles, they were renamed as M + M in 1983.

Believe it or not, but there was actually a 1960s band named '?' and the Mysterians!
8. He was born in Indonesia to Dutch parents, schooled in Belgium, launched his career in Germany, and had a big hit with a song satirising a British hotel. His stage name comes from a Mexican food. Who is the cosmopolitan man?

Answer: Taco

In 1982, Taco Ockerse covered 'Puttin' on the Ritz', written by Irving Berlin in 1927, and named after a very classy hotel in London. It refers to anyone who dresses fashionably.
9. This man had a very long career, with his first single, 'Wichita Falls Blues', being released way back in 1929. He influenced such legends as BB King, Chuck Berry, and Jimi Hendrix. He continued recording and performing almost to his death in 1975. Who is this man, whose name could be associated with a butcher's shop?

Answer: 'T-Bone' Walker

He got his nickname from a corruption of his middle name, Thibeaux. He was one of the first musicians to use an electric guitar and is acknowledged as a real master. Perhaps his biggest hit was 'Stormy Monday', released in 1947, and covered many times since.

Meat Loaf (aka Marvin O'Day), was not born until 1947. 'Pork Chop Hill' is a war movie about a battle in Korea and Brisket Billings is a name I invented.
10. This Texan band took their name from a television show, 'Bowling for Dollars', changing the last word. What are they bowling for now?

Answer: Soup

Bowling for Soup is just a fun name, and does not really aspire to anything deep and meaningful. They actually won an award for their name- Radio Disney Music Award for Silliest Band Name, in 2003; even the Beatles don't have one of them!

They have released a few albums and singles, with their 2002 album, 'Drunk Enough to Dance' and the 2004 single '1985' both garnering Top 40 status.
