Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Endless Wire" was a follow up to the Who album "It's Hard"... twenty-four years after "It's Hard" was released! The new album was released before what major holiday in the UK?

Answer: Halloween

The release date was October 30, 2006 in the UK and was released on October 31, 2006 in the US. "Endless Wire" charted at #7 on the Billboard album chart and #9 in the UK.
2. The original release of "Endless Wire" was slated to be in the spring of 2005. However the Who's drummer, Zac Starkey, made commitments to his other band. What's the other band Starkey's in?

Answer: Oasis

Oasis are an English rock band, formed in the year 1991. Their influences are mainly bands from the British Invasion, such as the Beatles, Rolling Stones, and the Who themselves! Starkey's commitment to Oasis while touring and recording albums with them interfered with the Who's recording of "Endless Wire".
3. "Endless Wire' was recorded at Eel Pie Oceanic Studios. What other recording studio was used to complete the album?

Answer: Pete Townshend's home studio

The recording sessions took from autumn 2002 to summer 2006. An interesting note: Townshend partially owns Eel Pie Oceanic Studios.
4. Almost all the songs on "Endless Wire" were written by Pete Townshend, except for three. Lawrence Ball helped Townshend write "Fragments" and "Fragments of Fragments". Also, Rachel Fuller helped the guitarist write a song too. Which one?

Answer: It's Not Enough

"It's Not Enough" is about one man complaining that he tries really hard at life but his woman thinks it's not enough. Rachel Fuller has been helping the Who compose and write songs since 1997.
5. Townshend wrote three songs off "Endless Wire" based on a Mel Gibson movie he saw while recording the album. What Mel Gibson movie was it?

Answer: Passion of the Christ

The three songs that were written based on "Passion of the Christ" were "Two Thousand Years", "A Man in a Purple Dress", and "Unholy Trinity".
6. "Endless Wire" features a mini-rock opera from the Who. On the album, it appaers right after the song "You Stand by Me". What is the name of this rock opera?

Answer: Wire & Glass

"Wire & Glass" has songs all written by Townshend, except for one where Lawrence Ball helped again ("Fragments of Fragments"). Funny thing, Zac Starkey's drumming role for the Who wasn't even heard in the mini rock-opera, because of his comitments to Oasis. Instead, Peter Huntington played drums on the tracks.
7. What is the first song on the mini rock-opera featured in "Endless Wire"?

Answer: Sound Round

"Sound Round" was actually written during the time the Who were recording one of the greatest albums of all time, "Who's Next". "Sound Round", however, was never recorded for the album and instead was recorded for "Endless Wire", thirty-five years after it was written.
8. True or False: "Endless Wire" (the song) is featured in the mini rock-opera "Wire & Glass"?

Answer: True

"Endless Wire" (the song) appears on "Wire & Glass" which appears on "Endless Wire" (the album). Confusing? You bet! There is a short a minute and a half version on the mini rock-opera, but an extended version of the song as a bonus track.
9. The song "Black Widow's Eyes" is based on what terrorism threat in 2004?

Answer: Beslan school siege

The Beslan school siege, also known as the Beslan Massacre, started on September 1st, 2004 and ended on September 3rd, 2004. According to www.wikipedia.org: "The terrorist threat began when armed Muslim terrorists took more than 1200 school children and adults hostage on September 1, at School Number One in the Russian town of Beslan in North Ossetia.

It ended on the third day of the standoff, gunfire broke out between the hostage-takers and Russian security forces. According to official data, 344 civilians were killed, 186 of them children, and hundreds more wounded." It was indeed a terrible thing.
10. If you purchase "Endless Wire", you'll also receive a bonus DVD with the Who performing hit songs live. Where are they playing the concert which is on the DVD?

Answer: Lyon

The additional tracks on the DVD are "I Can't Explain", "Behind Blue Eyes", "Mike Post Theme", "Baba O Riley", and "Won't Get Fooled Again". Thanks for playing my quiz, and please check out "Endless Wire". The Who still are an amazing band and this is a great album. Townshend and Daltrey sure can still rock for a couple of old guy!
