Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was the 1979 Eurovision Song Contest held?

Answer: Jerusalem, Israel

Having won the 1978 contest with the song "A-Ba-Ni-Bi", Israel hosted the 1979 contest. The contest was held in the International Convention Centre in Jerusalem.
2. Which country won the 1979 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Israel

Israel won for the second year in a row. Their entry, "Hallelujah", was sung by Gali Atari and Milk and Honey.
3. The UK's 1979 entry was a song called "Mary Ann". Who sang it?

Answer: Black Lace

"Mary Ann" was sung by the group Black Lace. The song only reached #42 in the UK charts, which was the lowest position in many years for a Eurovision entry. It didn't do well in the competition either, placing third from the bottom. Black Lace was a bubblegum pop music group best known for their song "Agadoo".
4. As was becoming more and more frequent, politics raised its ugly head, causing one country to withdraw from the competition. Which country dropped out?

Answer: Turkey

Turkey was going to take part in the competition, but under pressure from other Arab states it withdrew. Had they taken part, their entry would have been "Seviyorum" ("I'm Loving"), to have been sung by Maria Rita Epik & 21.Peron.
5. The current rules stated that each country had to sing in their own official language - but there are a number of countries with more than one official language. How many entries in the 1979 Eurovision Song Contest were sung entirely in French?

Answer: 3

They were

France - "Je suis l'enfant soleil" ("I'm the Sun Child")
Luxembourg - "J'ai déjà vu ça dans tes yeux" ("I've Already Seen That in Your Eyes") and
Monaco - "Notre vie c'est la musique" ("Our Life is Music")
6. Did any country debut at the 1979 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: No

No country which had not participated in the past chose to enter the contest. Neither did any country return to it after a lapse in participation.
7. The contest scores were running neck and neck in the 1979 Eurovision Contest. Finally, with only one country to score, the winning song was behind by just one point, and the jury which was left to give its scores was that of the song in the lead. Which country was the last to announce its scores?

Answer: Spain

Spain's entry was one point in the lead - and a jury can't award any points to its own country's entry. Some juries might have given their points to any country which had no chance of beating them, but the Spanish jury took the high road and rightfully awarded 10 points to Israel, giving Israel the overall victory.
8. Who was the female presenter at the 1979 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Yardena Arazi

Yardena Arazi was one of the group which sang the 1976 Israeli entry, "Emor Shalom" ("Say Peace"). That entry placed sixth.

The other names are those of real Israeli television presenters.
9. There's always a halftime - what group or entertainer performed for the halftime of the 1979 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Shalom '79

Shalom '79 provided halftime entertainment.

Hanna Laslo is an actress and comedienne, Yisrael "Poli" Poliakov was a comedian and actor (he died in 2007), and Gidi Gov is a singer, actor and entertainer.
10. Nineteen countries vied for the 1979 Eurovision Song crown. That means there should have been a 1st position, 2nd position, 3rd etc, all the way to 19th, right? Wrong - or is it? How many countries, if any, tied for position?

Answer: 2

Two countries tied for last place (18th, in this case). They were Belgium with "Hey Nana" sung by Micha Marah and Austria with "Heute in Jerusalem" ("Today in Jerusalem") sung by Christina Simon.
