Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest held?

Answer: Luxembourg

Having won the prior year's competition, Luxembourg was the host in 1973. The competition took place in the Nouveau Theatre in the city of Luxembourg.
2. Which country won the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Luxembourg

Luxembourg won with their entry "Tu te reconnaitras" ("You'll Recognise Yourself"), sung by Anne-Marie David. This was their fourth win, and their second in a row. They beat second-place Spain by a mere four points.
3. The UK's 1973 entry was a song called "Power to All Our Friends". Who sang it?

Answer: Cliff Richard

Cliff Richard is an English singer, songwriter and actor, often backed by the group called The Shadows. While he remained wildly popular in the UK, with hit songs in every decade since the 1950s, he did not gain a significant foothold in the US music scene.

David Essex is a British singer/actor who made his name in stage musicals and later had a string of hit singles. Rainbow was a heavy metal band formed in 1975 by Ritchie Blackmore, previously of Deep Purple. Stealers Wheel is a Scottish folk rock band formed in 1972 by Gerry Rafferty and Joe Egan.
4. Scandal! One country's entry was accused of being a plagarised version of Yugoslavia's 1966 entry, just redone in another language. Which country was accused of swiping the song?

Answer: Spain

Spain was accused of taking Yugoslavia's 1966 entry "Brez besed" ("Without Words") and giving it a new name, "Eres tu" ("You Are") and Spanish lyrics. However, the allegation did not stand and the Spanish entry went on to place second - and became a big hit internationally.
5. This year, the rules regarding singing in a national language relaxed to allow countries to choose any language they wished. How many entries in the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest were sung at least in part in English?

Answer: five

The ones sung entirely in English were

Finland - "Tom Tom Tom"
Sweden - "You're Summer"
Ireland - "Do I Dream" and
United Kingdom - "Power to All Our Friends".

Norway's entry, "It's Just A Game", was sung in English and French.
6. Two countries withdrew from the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest. Malta was one; which was the other withdrawing country?

Answer: Austria

It was Austria, for reasons unknown. Malta had a reasonable excuse - they had come in last at the previous two contests.

Portugal's entry was essentially a protest against its current political dictatorship. Monaco's entry was more pedestrian, a song about a girl leaving her home to seek employment in Paris. Ireland had a stormier time of it - the singer and the Irish officials had a bit of a melt-down over how the song would be performed, causing the singer, Maxi, to quit mid-rehearsal. Another singer, Tina Reynolds, was immediately flown out to Luxembourg but in the end Maxi performed the song, although in whose style is not known. It came in tenth.
7. For one country, the 1973 contest was their first. Which country had its debut this year?

Answer: Israel

Israel debuted with their entry "Ey Sham" ("Somewhere"). This was the first time a country outside the European continent participated, but they already were members of the European Broadcasting Union, a qualification for participation in the contest.

This also may have added to the tension over security, following the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre, which caused the contest to greatly tighten the security; the floor manager of the event advised audiences to remain seated at all times to avoid being shot as potential terrorists.
8. Who was the presenter at the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Helga Guitton

Helga Guitton is a German radio and television presenter.

Eva Hache is a Spanish comedy actress and television presenter. Eva Herman and Patrice Bouedibela are both German television presenters.
9. There's always a halftime - what was the entertainment for the halftime of the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest?

Answer: Charlie Rivel

Charlie Rivel, born Josep Andreu i Lasserre, was a Spanish clown who took his stage name from Charlie Chaplin. His most famous routine involved a chair, a long jersey and a guitar.

Julio Iglesias is a singer, famous around the world. Francisco Montes Reina, who died in 1851, is one of the most famous Spanish bullfighters of all time. Miguel Bernal is the leader of a troupe of Spanish flamenco dancers.
10. Seventeen countries vied for the 1973 Eurovision Song crown. That means someone should have come in #17, right? Wrong. How many countries, if any, tied for position?

Answer: six

Six countries tied for three positions. Germany and Monaco tied for eighth place, Portugal and Ireland for tenth place and Yugoslavia and France tied for fifteenth place. Belgium brought up the bottom, in seventeenth place.
