Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Falco is of course his stage name. What is his given name?

Answer: Johann Hölzel

Born in Vienna, Austria in 1957, Johann Hölzel began his solo career as Falco after returning from West Berlin, taking the name from Falko Weisspflog, an East German ski jumper.
2. At a time when many new music styles were appearing, Falco had many influences, from Jazz-Rock to R&B. Which musician, known for his "Berlin Trilogy", did Falco name as an early influence and idol of his?

Answer: David Bowie

Falco's first album, "Einzelhaft", was almost a tribute album of sorts to David Bowie. In later interviews, Falco stated that Bowie was more like an idol to him than just a simple influence.
3. "Der Kommissar", Falco's first international release, was a top-ten hit everywhere but the United States, where it didn't reach the top-ten until 1983. Which band's remake made the song a hit?

Answer: After the Fire

After the Fire's remake was their only US hit. While keeping the melody and a few German words, After the Fire's version really bears no resemblance to the original in meaning.
4. 1985 saw Falco's biggest hit, "Rock Me Amadeus". Appearing on the album "Falco 3", the song reached number one worldwide. What was the inspiration behind Falco's best known song?

Answer: The movie "Amadeus".

On the official Falco website (http://www.falco.at), it states in his biography that the movie "Amadeus" was his inspiration. The success of "Rock Me Amadeus" made the album "Falco 3" a top five album of the year throughout the world, reaching number three in the United States. Unfortunately, that success also overshadows many other great songs written by Falco.
5. True or false? Falco's only US top-40 song was "Rock Me Amadeus".

Answer: False

Also released on "Falco 3" was the song "Vienna Calling", which reached number 18, and "The Sound of Musik" reached number 19 on the Dance charts according to Billboard.
6. American audiences might not realize that Falco had his share of censorship problems. Which 1985 single, intended as the first in a "trilogy", caused an uproar over the lyrics, causing it to be avoided by many West German radio stations and banned outright in East Germany?

Answer: Jeanny

The song was about a stalker who kidnaps (and presumably murders) a woman. A well-known West German anchorman led the attempt to have it banned completely, his own daughters and niece having been kidnapped and fortunately released.
7. Another popular song appearing on "Falco 3" was "Munich Girls". The song is a German language remake of what 1984 song by The Cars?

Answer: Looking for Love

"Looking for Love" was released on The Cars' "Heartbeat City" album. In Falco's version, the only major change was writing German lyrics to fit the song. It was an excellent cover, but not good enough to compete with the monster that was "Rock Me Amadeus".
8. True or false? Before Falco's success, no other Austrian artist had a song reach number one on any chart.

Answer: False

In 1961, Bert Kämpfert's "Wonderland by Night" reached number one in the US. However, Falco is the best-selling Austrian artist of all time, not just in the US, but worldwide, as of 2016.
9. Like most artists find out, success doesn't last. The late 80s and early 90s weren't kind to Falco. In 1992, after two albums that didn't fare well, he began work on his eighth album. Probably obsessing too much, how many years did Falco spend working on the album?

Answer: six years

After six years obsessing over everything from one set of lyrics to the album's track order, Falco finally had the album ready. Before the album's release, he took a much needed vacation in the Dominican Republic.
10. Falco's vacation turned out to be his last. Falco died on February 6, 1998 in a car accident in the Dominican Republic, just weeks before the release of his eighth album, "Out of the Dark". The title track contains the line "muss ich denn sterben, um zu leben". What is the English translation, leading many to believe his death wasn't just an accident?

Answer: "must I die in order to live"

While many of Falco's later songs had a darker than usual feel to them, the song had been performed and released as a single several years before his death. Officially, Falco had cocaine in his system, and the accident, and his death, were the results.
