Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What 1970 hit had the first line: "Jeremiah was a Bullfrog"?

Answer: Joy to the World

Written by Hoyt Axton and performed by Three Dog Night from the album "Naturally". The title certainly has nothing to do with the first line, but when you hear the first line, you know the song.
2. Which classic song begins with the line: "Get your motor runnin'"?

Answer: Born to be Wild

Written by Mars Bonfire, performed by Steppenwolf, from their self titled first album. The classic motorcycle song from 1968. It also includes the line "Heavy metal thunder" which is where Heavy Metal music got its name.
3. This 20.5 minute song is pretty well known, but the first line might not be associated with it. It is the title track of an album, and the song takes up half the album. Don't rush to answer. "And the meek shall inherit the Earth".

Answer: 2112

Few rock bands can put you into a future time like Rush does in this 1976 epic. It is a story of a man finding a guitar in what he thought was a perfect world run by priests. They destroy his instrument as well as his hopes, and in the end he kills himself.
4. This song may be more obscure. It is from the fourth album of a band named after a centrally located state. The song is the story of a people who are overwhelmed by immigrants. From which song is this the first line? "From the mountains to the sun; Life has only just begun".

Answer: Cheyenne Anthem

This is from the 1976 "Leftoverture" album by Kansas, written by Kerry Livgren. It's a song about how the Cheyenne fought for their land and were wiped out. It also includes one of the finest last lines of a song. "In the ground our bodies lay; Here we'll stay".
5. What song is this the first line of? "We all came out to Montreux".

Answer: Smoke on the Water

Deep Purple, from the album 1972 "Machine Head". Hopefully you all got that one. The wrong answers are all plays on Deep Purple songs or lines from the same era. One of my favorites, especially when performed live.
6. The first song on the first album of a British group everybody knows, which song begins with: "Well she was just seventeen; and you know what I mean"?

Answer: I Saw Her Standing There

The Beatles, of course, from 1963. Nobody wrote and performed songs the way they could. This is my favorite from their earlier years.
7. This is the opening song from the third album of a royally named British band. The title would seem to have little to do with the first line, but maybe the phrase "public holiday" and "British" will help out. What love song begins: "Happy little day, Jimmy went away; Met his little Jenny on a public holiday"?

Answer: Brighton Rock

By Queen from the 1974 "Sheer Heart Attack" album. It was written by Queen guitarist Brian May. It is a love story set in Brighton. Unfortunately at the end we find Jenny "pining away". She had her chance, if not for her "mum in disarray". Great guitar solo in this song.
8. Performed by a group from Long Island, but not so well known, this could be a cult classic. Which song begins with the line: "Strange shapes light up the night; I've never seen 'em, though I hope I might"?

Answer: Take Me Away

Written by Eric Bloom and Aldo Nova in 1983, and performed by the great Blue Oyster Cult, of course. I like the humor they put in the lyrics, too as in the next line: "Don't ask if they are real; the men in black, their lips are sealed". One of my favorite songs that few people have heard.
9. A big hit in 1976, this British group performed with cellos and a violin. Which song is the following line from? "Sailin' away on the crest of a wave; It's like magic".

Answer: Livin' Thing

Performed by The Electric Light Orchestra from the "New World Record" album. Written by Jeff Lynne. Every time I hear this song, I'm back in high school roaming the halls.
10. I think everyone who is older can associate with the first line of this song. "Remember when you were young; You shone like the sun".

Answer: Shine on You Crazy Diamond

By Pink Floyd from the 1975 album "Wish You Were Here". The 25+ minute song, performed in two parts was written about the founding member, Sid Barrett, whom the other band members hadn't seen for years. As they were finishing the album in the studio, Barrett came in and wasn't recognized for quite awhile. It was the last time they saw him.
