Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chicago band Styx recorded "Renegade" back in 1978. Which NFL team use it to get fists pumping in the crowd?

Answer: Pittsburgh Steelers

"Renegade" tells the story of an outlaw about to be hanged and is his final message to his mother. Styx often close their live concerts with this track, while the Steelers use it often when they are defending an opposition play.
2. "Electric Worry" by Clutch (2007) has long been used by Vancouver Canucks in NHL, but it is also used by which team in the National Lacrosse League?

Answer: Calgary Roughnecks

Being so popular with Canadian sporting teams, one would expect Clutch to be Canadian, but they are from Maryland USA. "Electric Worry" is from their album "From Beale Street To Oblivion" (2007) and features elements of the Muddy Waters track, "Trouble No More" (1955). Calgary Roughnecks were NLL champions in 2004 and 2009.
3. Welsh rugby union fans sing this song, but it is also heard in football at every Stoke City home game. Which Tom Jones track is it?

Answer: Delilah

Sometimes a good song sounds even better when sung en masse and that is certainly the case with "Delilah", whether it's 12,000 Welsh rugby fans or 30,000 Stoke fans singing it. Welsh politicians have tried to stop rugby fans singing the song as "it trivialises the idea of murdering a woman" in their words, but the tradition continues. The singing of it by Stoke City fans is believed to originate from a concert at Stoke's ground in the 1970s by Sensational Alex Harvey Band, who turned it into a audience singalong and the tradition grew from there.
4. "Sirius" has long been associated with NBA's Chicago Bulls but which progressive rock band first recorded it in 1982?

Answer: The Alan Parsons Project

Alan Parsons Project are hardly well known hit makers, although they did have a Canadian number one in 1982 with "Eye In The Sky" and "Sirius" is, sporting connections aside, not a well known track, but it is the instrumental prelude to "Eye In The Sky" on the 1982 album of the same name. Prior to "Sirius", the Bulls had used Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and the theme to TV show, "Miami Vice", but "Sirius" works much better than either of them, and is well known as the song of the Michael Jordan era.
5. Winner of the 2014 BDO World Championships, darts player Stephen Bunting uses which song as his walk on music? Originally from 1963, this track was revived by Peter Griffin in 2008.

Answer: Surfin' Bird

A Billboard Hot 100 number four hit for the surf rock band the Trashmen in 1963, "Surfin' Bird" found a new lease of life when it was featured almost constantly in the 2008 "Family Guy" episode, "I Dream Of Jesus". While other darts players use tracks such as Seven Nation Army (White Stripes, 2003) and "Jump Around" (House Of Pain, 1992), Bunting prefers one of the most annoying tracks there is, although as he has twice won the World Masters as well as his World Championship win, it doesn't seem to affect his game.
6. "Chelsea Dagger" gets a few plays as the Chicago Blackhawks of NHL use it as their goal song. Which Scottish band recorded it originally in 2006?

Answer: The Fratellis

"Chelsea Dagger" was first used by the Blackhawks in 2008, but became irrevocably associated with them in 2010 as they powered their way to their first Stanley Cup win since 1961. It is also a popular track in football with Celtic, Montreal Impact, Juventus, Perth Glory and of course Chelsea all having used it. Surprisingly, given the song's worldwide sporting success, it was only a hit in Scotland, UK and Netherlands when it was released.
7. Scottish snooker star Shaun Murphy uses which well known piece from a movie as his walk on song? Why? Who knows, maybe he likes rum.

Answer: He's A Pirate (Pirates Of The Caribbean)

Other snooker players use tracks from the likes of Black Eyed Peas (Marco Fu and Stephen Lee), Van Halen (Mark Williams) and Motorhead (Martin Gould), but Murphy goes with this piece composed by Klaus Badelt and Hans Zimmer from the 2003 movie. Being a pirate seems to suit Murphy though as he won The Masters in 2015 and in 2017, beat Ronnie O'Sullivan in the Champion Of Champions final.
8. Which Australian Football League team, known as the Dockers, use a song based on a traditional Russian folk song, "Song Of The Volga Boatmen" (1860)?

Answer: Fremantle

"Song Of The Volga Boatmen" has been popular outside Russia since Glenn Miller scored a huge hit with it in 1941 and has been recorded by a variety of artists including Paul Robeson and the Red Army Choir. The Fremantle version of the song is known as "Freo Heave Ho", based on the original song lyrics, of which part translates as "yo heave ho". Fremantle are perennial under achievers in AFL, although they did manage to reach the Grand Final in 2013, losing to Hawthorn.
9. Originally from the 1902 musical, "The Silver Slipper", which punk band covered the Boston Red Sox anthem, "Tessie" in 2004?

Answer: Dropkick Murphys

The original song from the musical was by a character singing to her pet parakeet, so not an obvious choice as a baseball song, but when the forerunner to the Red Sox, the Boston Americans, were 3-1 down to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 1903 World Series, the fans began singing every song that was popular in an attempt to rally their team. "Tessie" was the song that worked the magic as the team went on to win games five through eight, and ultimately the series. "Tessie" was released by Boston band, Dropkick Murphys as a tribute to the team and reached number 22 on the U.S.

Independent charts.
10. "Immigrant Song" by Led Zeppelin is associated with which Buffalo sports team?

Answer: Queen City Roller Girls (Roller Derby)

"We come from the land of the ice and snow" is the opening line to "Immigrant Song" (1970), and what better line to introduce a team from Buffalo? Queen City Roller Girls compete in the Women's Flat Track Derby Association and features stars such as "Pepper Stix", "Bricks Hit House" and "Veggy Cowgirl".
