Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Elvis Presley song was used by Arsenal Football Club as their 'theme' music?

Answer: The Wonder Of You

"When no-one else can understand me
When everything I do is wrong..."
Arsenal Football Club was founded in 1886. 'The Gunners' liked to run out onto the pitch at the Emirates Stadium (named after their sponsors) to the sounds of 'The King'. The club's mascot was 'Gunnersaurus Rex'.
Sources for these questions: 'The Daily Telegraph', August 2008 and individual club websites. This quiz is not intended as an in-depth examination of the clubs or their histories.
2. Some regarded it as a fab sound. Which music was played as Aston Villa took to the pitch for their home games?

Answer: The countdown to 'Thunderbirds'

"Five...four...three...two...one...Thunderbirds are Go"
The Midlands club Aston Villa FC was established in 1874 and was one of the founding members of the English Football League in 1888. The home ground was Villa Park. Villa's mascot was 'Hercules The Lion'.
3. At Ewood Park, the home of Blackburn Rovers FC, the fans had a wide range of chants, many of them abusive of one other club in particular. Which club?

Answer: Burnley

Ok, so this question is a cop-out. My primary source indicated Blackburn didn't have a theme song, and despite a lot of effort, I couldn't contradict that. However, rather than face a deluge of correction notes from irate Blackburn fans telling me there was one, I decided to side-step the issue. Blackburn Rovers FC was established in 1875 and was one of the founding members of the English Football League in 1888. Average crowds of just under 24,000 at Ewood Park provided a lot of their own entertainment, which included watching the antics of the club mascot, 'Roar Lion'. Blackburn fans had a range of chants - most of them denigrating their arch-rivals Burnley (and much too crude to repeat here).
4. The English soccer team Bolton Wanderers liked to run out for their home games to the theme music from a WW2 movie. Which movie?

Answer: 633 Squadron

The theme to the 1964 movie '633 Squadron' was better known as 'The Dambusters March', a reference to the RAF squadron's most famous operation.
Established in 1874, Bolton Wanderers FC was, again, a co-founder of the English Football League. Average attendances for 'The Trotters' at the Rebok Stadium were a shade under 21,000 and the mascot was 'Lofty The Lion'.
5. It was banned from the musical playlists at some English football grounds, but remained popular at Stamford Bridge. Which song was played as Chelsea ran out for their home games?

Answer: Liquidator

'Liquidator' by the Harry J. Allstars was a 1969 reggae song, with Chelsea, Wolverhamption Wanderers and West Bromich Albion all having claimed to have used it first. West Midlands Police asked Wolves and WBA to remove it from their playlists because of obscenities.
Founded in 1905, Chelsea's mascot was 'Stamford The Lion'.
6. Everton FC took a notion to run out for home games to music associated with a TV show. Which TV show?

Answer: Z Cars

"Johnny Todd he took a notion for to sail the ocean wide" were the opening words to a traditional English folk song about a sailor who left his true love "waiting by the Liverpool tide". An instrumental version was used for the gritty 1960s TV cop show 'Z Cars'. Everton FC was founded in 1878. Average attendance for home games by 'The Toffees' at Goodison Park was just under 37,000.

The club mascot was 'The Chang Elephant'.
7. As you might expect from London's oldest football club, Fulham FC had a bit of style about their music. Which piece was played as the teams emerged for games at Craven Cottage?

Answer: Bolero

'Bolero' was the music from the end credits to the 2001 movie 'Moulin Rouge'. Founded in 1879, at the start of the 2008/09 season, Fulham announced plans for a ground extension that would add 4,000 to the capacity at Craven Cottage. The club's mascot was 'Billy The Badger'.
8. Hull City got on their marks and set for their first season in the FA Premiership in August 2008. Which piece of music was their theme?

Answer: Ready To Go

'Ready To Go' by Republica was the music that Hull City ran out to at the K C Stadium. Founded in 1904, Hull City Association Football Club was hoping that 2008/2009 season, their first in the highest echelon of English football, would be a successful one. Fans were hoping that the mascot 'Roary The Tiger' would help prevent immediate relegation, as some observers predicted.
9. There can be few football fans who do not know that 'You'll Never Walk Alone' was the theme song for Liverpool FC. But who wrote the song?

Answer: Rogers and Hammerstein

'You'll Never Walk Alone' was from the 1945 musical 'Carousel'. It became popular in Liverpool when local group 'Gerry [Marsden] and the Pacemakers' took it to the top of the UK singles charts in 1964. Liverpool FC was formed in 1892 and their home ground was Anfield, though plans for a move to a new stadium have been announced. The Liverpool mascot was 'Lily The Liverbird'.
10. It was every football club's dream to do well in the Premiership, but which song did Manchester City use as a theme?

Answer: Nightmare

Brainbug was an Italian band that specialised in electronic dance music. 'Nightmare' was a minor hit in 1996. Manchester City FC traced its roots back to 1880, though adopted the current name in 1894. The club had two mascots 'Moonbeam' and 'Moonchester'.
11. Manchester United chose a song by a band from the city to play as the team emerged for games at Old Trafford. Which band?

Answer: Stone Roses

The 'Red Devils' ran out to the strains of 'This Is the One'. 'Fred The Red' was the official mascot. MUFC was founded in 1878 but only adopted the name in 1902. The club was formerly known as Newtown Heath.
(If either of the Gallagher brothers play this quiz, I was only joking; I know you are Manchester City fans).
12. An instrumental piece by punk band provided the music for Middlesbrough FC to come onto the pitch for their home games. What was the name of the record?

Answer: Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag

"Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag" was a song that became the signature tune of Pigbag, a band formed in the genteel surroundings of Cheltenham. 'The Boro' were founded in 1876. Their mascot was 'Roary the Lion'.
13. A traditional Geordie tune was used by Newcastle United FC as player ran out onto the pitch. What was it called?

Answer: The Bladon Races

People from Newcastle in the North East of England were known as Geordies. The club was founded in 1892 on the merger of two earlier clubs. 'The Magpies' (the club's traditional colours are black and white stripes) or 'The Toon' as they are nicknamed, played at St James's Park. The mascot was 'Monty Magpie'.
14. For hundreds of years the city of Portsmouth was associated with the sea and has had a football club since 1898. Which musician known chiefly for his instrumental works provided the tune that ushered players onto the pitch at their home games?

Answer: Mike Oldfield

That piece of music was 'Portsmouth', a traditional English folk tune that Oldfield adapted. It reached number three in the UK singles charts in 1976. Nicknamed (chiefly) 'Pompey', Portsmouth FC played at Fratton Park. The club mascot was 'Frogmore The Frog'.
15. Unusually for a club in the top flight of English football, Stoke City had a theme song with a distinctly football orientation. What was it called?

Answer: We'll Be With You

'We'll Be With You' was a song written for Stoke's 1972 appearance in the League Cup Final. The club was formed in 1863, making it the second oldest in the football league (and also the longest established in the Premier League, as of August 2008). (Nottingham County was the oldest team). Stoke played at the Britannia Stadium and had two mascots 'Pottermus' and 'Pottermiss'. Based as it was in the centre of English pottery and ceramic-making, the club's mascot was 'The Potters'.
16. Sunderland FC was another of the English Premier League Club that had a piece of classical music as its signature tune. What was it called?

Answer: Dance Of The Knights

Sunderland ran out at 'The Stadium of Light' to the sounds of Prokofiev's 'Dance of the Nights', which was, of course, from 'Romeo and Juliet'. The club, nicknamed 'The Black Cats', was formed in 1879. The team's mascots were a pair of cats named 'Samson' and 'Delilah'.
17. 'Glory, Glory Tottenham Hotspur', it won't be difficult to guess, was the theme song of the North London football side Tottenham Hotspur. But what was the well known melody to which the words were sung?

Answer: Battle Hymn of the Republic

"Glory, glory, Tottenham Hotspur!
Glory, glory, Tottenham Hotspur!
Glory, glory, Tottenham Hotspur
And the Spurs go marching on. "
Tottenham Hotspur FC, known as 'Spurs' was founded in 1882. The home ground was White Hart Lane and the club's mascot was 'Chirpy The Cockerel'.
18. Being passionate about any football club could induce many sleepless nights as fortunes changed so 'Insomnia' was probably an apt song for managers players and supporters of West Bromich Albion. Who recorded the song?

Answer: Faithless

'Insomnia' was a UK number three hit for Faithless in 1996 - though it was in the charts a year earlier and returned to the top 50 in 2005. Founded in 1878 'West Brom' as it was best known, played at The Hawthornes and the most common nickname was 'The Bagges' - the origins of the nickname are disputed. The club mascot was 'Baggie Bird'
19. Which of these songs was the signature tune for the east London football club West Ham United?

Answer: I'm For Ever Blowing Bubbles

"I'm forever blowing bubbles,
Pretty bubbles in the air,
They fly so high, nearly reach the sky,
Then like my dreams they fade and die.
Fortune's always hiding,
I've looked everywhere,
I'm forever blowing bubbles,
Pretty bubbles in the air."
Known as 'The Hammers' the club traced its roots back to 1895 and its home ground from 1912 was The Boleyn Ground - often mis-named Upton Park, which is the area of London in which it is situated. Plans have been announced for the construction of a new ground nearby. The club's mascot was 'Herbie The Hammer'.
20. The music associated with Wigan Athletic Football Club and played when they took the field for home games was 'The Battle', by Hans Zimmer. On which movie soundtrack did it appear?

Answer: Gladiator

The soundtrack album of the 2000 movie won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Oscar. Founded in 1932, 'The Latics' were the youngest club in the FA Premiership. Home games were played at the JJB Stadium in Wigan, Greater Manchester. The mascot was boy and girl "JJ' and 'B'. JJB, a sports retailer, was the company's sponsor.
