Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What song is the following lyric from?: "The Zipper From The Black Lagoon?"

Answer: Cheepnis

"Cheepnis" first appeared on the "Roxy and Elsewhere" album, as Zappa's homage to the great b-movies of his youth.
2. In what song would you find the following lyric?: "California's got the most of them/Boy, they got a host of them."

Answer: Flakes

"Flakes" was the second cut on "Sheik Yerbouti", the album which also featured "Jewish Princess" and "Dancin' Fool". The song resonates with me, since I know very few people who wouldn't qualify for the title.
3. What song is this line from?: "It'll take the paint off your car, and wreck your windshield, too/I don't know how the people stand it, but I guess they do."

Answer: Village of the Sun

"Village of the Sun", which first appeared on "Roxy and Elsewhere", is a heartfelt remembrance of Palmdale, California, which was one of the towns Zappa grew up in.
4. Which Frank Zappa song features the following line?: "Don't you be tarot-fied ..."

Answer: A Token of My Extreme

"A Token of My Extreme" premiered on "Joe's Garage, Acts II & III", and is the beginning of a short set in the opus that parodies the Church of Scientology, as Joe gets entangled in the First Church of Appliantology while trying to soothe his broken heart.
5. "Now believe me when I tell you that my song is really true/I want everyone to listen and believe" is a line from which song?

Answer: Let's Make the Water Turn Black

"Let's Make the Water Turn Black" is essentially a true story about a strange pasttime that two brothers Zappa lived near had, keeping jars of odd materials until they fermented and things started growing in them. The song first appeared on "We're Only In It For the Money", and showed up on many later albums, including as an instrumental on "Make a Jazz Noise Here".
6. From which song is the following line?: "She ruled the Toads of the Short Forest, and every newt in Idaho."

Answer: Camarillo Brillo

This song first appeared on the "Over-nite Sensation" album. FYI, Camarillo is a region of California, noted for having a mental hospital. The 'brillo' part refers to the shaggy, curly hair many folks wore back in the day.
7. What song is this lyric from?: "And no one will give me a ride to the Grateful Dead concert ... rats!"

Answer: Teen-Age Wind

"Teen-Age Wind" is one of my favorite songs of all time, simply because if personifies almost every young person I've met in the past twenty-five years ... all wanting free rides and no responsibility in life. It first appeared on Zappa's "You Are What You Is" album.
8. In which Frank Zappa tune would you find the following lines?: "No one will know if you don't want to let them know/No one will know 'less it's you that might tell them so."

Answer: Call Any Vegetable

This tune was one of the first to appear on twice on a Frank Zappa release, having first been recorded for "Absolutely Free", and then being redone by the band on "Mothermania". Most folks think it refers to all the indolent and ignorant masses who never try to do anything that matters (to anyone other than themselves).
9. "But it doesn't matter no more, she's on the ocean floor" is a statement found in which song?

Answer: Drowning Witch

One of the best songs off of that album of the same name, its too bad it was overshadowed by the popularity of "Valley Girl". The name was taken from a famous droodle (which also adorned the album cover) by Roger Price.
10. What Frank Zappa song features the following complaint in its lyrics?: "His mother was screaming, his dad was mad/We're were playing the same old song."

Answer: Joe's Garage

This song, of course, appeared first on "Joe's Garage" in 1979. It always seemed to me to be one of Zappa's more heartfelt songs, even in the conceptual continuity of that particular composition, and I think is summed up the experiences of a lot of garage bands and rock and rollers in general.
