Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these 20th century composers worked with Frank Zappa?

Answer: Pierre Boulez

The 1984 album "Boulez Conducts Zappa: The Perfect Stranger" was their collaboration. Although Zappa adored Varèse, he never met him. He also thought highly of Stockhausen's work.
2. Which of these albums does Captain Beefheart NOT appear on?

Answer: Cruising With Ruben & the Jets

The late Captain Beefheart is perhaps best known to Zappa fans as the growling vocalist on "Willie the Pimp" from 1969's "Hot Rats."
3. Which of these actors is NOT mentioned in "The Radio is Broken" from 1983's "The Man From Utopia"?

Answer: Robert Hutton

One of Zappa's most interesting compositions. The lyrics are bizarre and the music sounds forbidding. Zappa uses "sprechtstimme" here -- half singing and half talking. "... They need to reproduce ..."
4. What is the song "Packard Goose" from "Joe's Garage" (1979) about?

Answer: Rock & Roll Journalists

"Journalism's kinda scary
And of it we should be wary
Wonder what became of Mary?"
5. Which grouping contains NO Synclavier compositions?

Answer: "Little Dots," "Finer Moments," and "One Shot Deal"

Zappa's last completed work -- the masterpiece "Civilization Phaze III" (1994) -- was composed entirely on the Synclavier.
6. Which of these is NOT a real album title?

Answer: Joe's Melange

Joe is Joe Travers, the Vaultmaster of the Zappa archives for many years now. Zappa fans owe him a huge debt. He is also a fabulous drummer.
7. Which album had a replica of Zappa's moustache pasted onto the front of the CD?

Answer: Frank Zappa Plays the Music of Frank Zappa -- a Memorial Tribute

A terrific release, featuring both live and studio versions of such classics as "Watermelon in Easter Hay" "Black Napkins" and "Zoot Allures."
8. During the 70s, Zappa sued Warner Bros., resulting in several "unauthorized" albums. Between Zappa and Warners, there was a Zappa album released every year of the 70s except ______?

Answer: 1977

From 1977 until he finalized his litigation in 1979, he was unable to release any new product. However, during that time, Warner Bros. went ahead and released several albums on their own without Zappa's involvement.
9. "Billy the Mountain" turns up on three separate releases. Which one does NOT contain this great comedy masterpiece?

Answer: Ahead of Their Time

With an average running time of 30 minutes, "Billy" is one of Zappa's most important compositions. The fun of comparing these different versions is instructive, as we get a peek into FZ's brilliant compositional techniques.
10. Zappa's first album of the 1970s was:

Answer: Burnt Weeny Sandwich

Zappa was busy during the last years of the 60s and beginning of the 70s. "Burnt Weeny" mainly features The Mothers playing live, although the album is bookended by two doo-wop compositions. "BWS" was released on February 9, 1970.
