quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Zappa album features several Mothers of Invention classical/jazz/rock instrumentals book-ended by two 1950s doo-wop cover tunes at the beginning and end of the album?

Answer: Burnt Weeny Sandwich

The excellent "Burnt Weeny Sandwich" album featured some of the Mothers' more avante-garde instrumental tunes. But Frank creatively began and ended the album with two old cover tunes from the Four Deuces ("WPLJ") and Jackie & the Starlites ("Valarie").
2. Jimmy Carl Black was one of the better-known and entertaining members of the original Mothers of Invention. After the original band broke up, Jimmy came back and sang lead vocals on two Zappa albums. The first album was on "200 Motels". What was the second album?

Answer: You Are What You Is

Jimmy Carl Black, the "Indian of the group", sang lead on the song "Lonesome Cowboy Burt" on the "200 Motels" soundtrack in 1971. Then he returned to sing lead on the humorous track "Harder Than Your Husband" on the 1981 "You Are What You Is" LP.
3. 1979's "Joe's Garage" and 1984's "Thing-Fish" were Frank Zappa's two "rock operas". The wife of which Zappa band member had significant speaking parts on both albums?

Answer: Terry Bozzio

After drummer Terry Bozzio left Zappa's band in 1977, he eventually went on to form the band Missing Persons, with his wife Dale Bozzio on lead vocals (along with another former Zappa band member, guitarist Warren Cuccurullo). Both of them came back to help Frank Zappa by providing two of the three main speaking parts on the bizarre "Thing-Fish" LP.
4. What was the name of the artist who painted/designed many of Frank Zappa's album covers, including "Hot Rats", "Just Another Band From L.A.", and "One Size Fits All"?

Answer: Cal Schenkel

Schenkel's greatest accomplishment is probably considered to be designing and assembling the "Sgt. Pepper" parody on the original cover of Zappa's 1968 groundbreaking "We're Only In It For The Money" LP.
5. One of Zappa's more important albums has been out of print since the 2002 because the Zappa Family Trust doesn't own the rights to it (United Artists does). What album is it?

Answer: 200 Motels

Since it was orginally released as a soundtrack album (to the movie of the same name also released in 1971), the rights belong to United Artists (the studio that released the film), whose music catalog is now controlled by Capitol Records.
6. Most of the live albums Frank released during his lifetime had a nice blend of classic Zappa tunes and some new tracks. Which live album featured nearly all original songs, most of which were satirical songs that took a stab at the politics of the time?

Answer: Broadway the Hard Way

1988's "Broadway The Hard Way" features mainly songs that mock politicians, televangelists, and social movements of the late 80s.
7. Which of the following Zappa albums was NOT a double LP when it was originally released on vinyl?

Answer: Hot Rats

Zappa's 1969 album, "Hot Rats", featured performances by Jean-Luc Ponty, and Captain Beefheart, among others.
8. Who was the talented L.A. rock violinist who played electric violin on several Zappa albums including "Burnt Weeny Sandwich" and "Weasels Ripped My Flesh"?

Answer: Don "Sugarcane" Harris

Sugarcane played with several notable musicians including Little Richard, John Mayall, and John Lee Hooker, and founded the short-lived blues/rock/jazz/funk combo Pure Food And Drug Act; they released their only album in 1972.
9. 1968's "Cruising With Ruben & The Jets" was Frank's loving tribute to the doo-wop bands of 50s and early 60s. Several tracks were reworked versions of songs from the "Freak Out!" album. Which of the following was NOT one of those reworked songs?

Answer: I Ain't Got No Heart

Many radio stations at the time aired several tracks from "Cruising", as various American DJs believed they had discovered a rare old doo-wop album by some band named Ruben and the Jets. Since Zappa's name wasn't prominent anywhere on the album cover, they were easily fooled. Zappa himself later denied that he was trying to trick radio stations into playing songs from the album.
10. Zappa released six volumes of the "You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore" series in the late 80s/early 90s, featuring live recordings from many Zappa tours dating back to the 60s. Five of the sets featured tracks from multiple eras and locations. Which volume is the only one to have all its tracks taken from one set of shows from a single northern European city in 1974?

Answer: Volume 2

Volume 2 of the "Stage" series featured all its tracks recorded during a few shows in Helsinki, Finland, in 1974. Many Zappa fans say this was Frank's best band (sometimes called the "Roxy" band), and Frank himself thought this series of shows and this particular version of The Mothers were some of the best he's ever done.
