The original line-up of the band was Tom Smith (lead vocals, guitar and piano), Russell Leetch (bass guitar, synthesizer and backing vocals), Geraint Owen (drums) and Chris Urbanowicz (lead guitar). The band were originally known as the Pilot, before realising that the name was already in use, changed to The Pride and then to Snowfield before becoming the Editors.

The Welsh name Geraint means an old man. The name stems from the Latin gerontius which in turn stems from the Greek geron which means old man. Owen was involved with the band Heights and decided to leave the Editors for them. Ed Lay was also a student at the Stafford University.
