Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Please choose which is the missing name? 'Love grows where my ___________goes And nobody knows like me.'

Answer: Rosemary

''Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)' was the one and only hit by Edison Lighthouse. It reached number one in the U.K. charts in January 1970, where it stayed for five weeks. Not counting Rolf Harris's 'Two Little Boys' which was already there in 1969, 'Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)' was the first U.K. number one hit of the 1970s.

In the US Billboard Hot 100 top 40 chart it reached its peak position of number five on March 28th and stayed there for three weeks.
2. Which girl's name should be in this space? 'Your looks intoxicate me Even though your folks hate me There's no one like you _________ really.'

Answer: Elenore

This song 'Elenore' by the Turtles was originally meant to be a joke song. They thought that the lyrics were so silly and badly written that the public would understand that it was a parody of the kind of happy go lucky love songs of the period, but people liked it and didn't get the joke. It was released in 1968 on the Turtles' 'Battle of the Bands' album.
3. Who makes the old magnolia tree blossom at the mention of her name?

Answer: Mame

'Mame' comes from the musical of the same name by Jerome Lawrence and Robert Edwin Lee. It is set during the great depression in the U.S.A. and opened in 1966 with Angela Lansbury and Bea Arthur in the starring roles. It was inspired by a comedy play on Broadway starring Rosalind Russell and a series of novels about 'Auntie Mame' written by Patrick Dennis.
4. Which sweet girl is Neil Diamond singing about here? 'Sweet__________ good times never seemed so good. I've been inclined To believe they never would.'

Answer: Caroline

Neil Diamond wrote and performed 'Sweet Caroline'. In a 2007 interview he revealed that his inspiration had been Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of president John F. Kennedy. At the time it was released she was eleven years old. He sang the song to her on her 50th birthday. However he later claimed that the song was about his wife Marcia.
5. What is the missing name in this song? 'Even Jake the plumber whose the man I adore Had the nerve to tell me he's been married before. Everyone knows that I'm just second hand _______ From Second Avenue'.

Answer: Rose

'Second Hand Rose' was first sung by the singer comedienne Fanny Brice in 1921, and in 1963 with slightly updated lyrics it was sung by Barbra Streisand in the movie 'Funny Girl', which was loosely based on Fanny's life story. The music was by Jule Styne, and lyrics by Bob Merrill, and the story featured the stormy relationship between Fanny and the entrepreneur and gambler Nick Arnstein.
6. Which name should be in these spaces? '_______, you've got me on my knees. ________, I'm begging, darling please. ________, darling won't you ease my worried mind.'

Answer: Layla

'Layla' was written by Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon and was originally released on an album by their blues band Derek and the Dominos. It was the result of the unrequited love of Eric Clapton for Patti Harrison the wife of George Harrison of Beatles fame, and although it was not obvious to the public all concerned knew who it was really about. Eric Clapton had been reading the 'Story Of Layla And Majnun', the 12th-century tale of an Arabian princess whose father marries her to someone else leaving her true love in a despair which turns to madness.
7. Which pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty girl did Buddy Holly sing about?

Answer: Peggy Sue

'Peggy Sue' is a song about a school classmate of Buddy's and married one of the Crickets, Jerry Allison the drummer, but sadly their marriage ended in divorce. The song was originally to be called Cindi Lou after Buddy Holly's niece, but Jerry was keen to impress Peggy Sue and persuaded Buddy to change the name. Buddy was killed in a plane crash in 1963, but not before he had written a sequel to the original song, called 'Peggy Sue Got Married'.
8. What is the missing name in this song? 'Hear my song _____________ Hear the song that's in my heart'

Answer: Violetta

'Hear My Song Violetta' was first made popular by Josef Locke the Irish tenor in 1947. Josef Locke was a very successful performer but unfortunately did not pay his taxes. He went into a self imposed exile in Ireland and appeared occasionally in England where he was billed as Mr. X.

Another tenor, Erik Ellison, also began touring and calling himself Mr. X, and although people came to his concerts expecting to see Josef Locke they could not complain because they had bought tickets to hear Mr. X.

There is a delightful 1992 movie called 'Hear My Song' based on this story with Ned Beatty in the lead role and also starring Tara Fitzgerald and Shirley Anne Field.
9. What name is missing here? '________ in the sky with diamonds'

Answer: Lucy

'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds' was written by John Lennon and it is said that it was inspired by his son Julian who brought a drawing home from nursery school which he called 'Lucy - in the sky with diamonds'. Because the first letters of the nouns in this title are L.S.D. and this was the abbreviation for the hallucinogenic drug lysergic acid diethylamide, it was said to be a drugs song and was banned by the BBC.

However, John Lennon always maintained that it was not intended to be a song about drugs, and that its dreamlike quality came from his reading of 'Alice in Wonderland' by Lewis Carroll.
10. In one song she is described as 'sweet' and in another as 'run around.', and there is a song by Johnny Cash about a boy who has this name. What name is it?

Answer: Sue

'Sweet Sue' was written in 1928 by Victor Young with lyrics by Will J. Harris. Popular versions were by Earl Burtnett and Ben Pollack. It is now a popular number in the jazz repertoire. 'Runaround Sue' was a hit by the singer Dion in 1961. It is a rock and roll number and was written by Dion and Ernie Maresca. 'A Boy Named Sue' was written by poet and humourist Shel Silverstein and sung by Johnny Cash who recorded it live at a concert in San Quentin prison.
